"abstractNote": "In the evolving world of higher education, both online and in the classroom, the discovery and integration of effective new practices is crucial in preparing today's growing number of adult students for tomorrow's dynamic and evolving workplace and to meet the educational demands of busy adult students. In \"Authentic Instruction and Online Delivery: Proven Practices in Higher Education,\" the three editors have collected and edited the experiences of twenty-six instructors or teams of instructors from a small, private, not-for-profit university in the Pacific Northwest. This collection was created to enable university instructors everywhere to learn from these classroom and online experiences. Presented in three parts, the book addresses authentic instructional strategies, online course delivery, and perspectives in teaching and learning. Part One introduces methods of authentic instruction. Part Two taps into the university's pioneering role in online education to shed new light on its design and delivery. Part Three addresses emerging themes in educational assessment and program revision. With the guiding principle that experience is the best teacher, this collection of essays aims to be an innovative compendium of practices that are both state-of-the-art and field-tested.",

"abstractNote": "Whether or not \"instruction\" appears in their job titles, librarians are often in the position of educating their users, colleagues, and peers to successfully locate and evaluate information. Because MLIS education tends to offer less-than-comprehensive preparation in pedagogy and instructional design, this much-needed book tackles the challenge of effective teaching and training head-on. Char Booth, an avid library education and technology advocate, introduces a series of concepts that will empower readers at any level of experience to become better designers and presenters, as well as building their confidence and satisfaction as library educators. Laying the foundation for effective teaching, Booth outlines a four-part framework of Instructional Literacy, which includes: (1) \"Reflective Practice\": tools for improving learning in the moment and developing a teacher identity, as well as approaches to collaboration and creating communities of practice; (2) \"Educational Theory\": evidence-based strategies in learning and instructional research; (3) \"Teaching Technologies\": evaluating and integrating technology in learning using a practical \"toolkit\" approach; and (4) \"Instructional Design\": a systematic and outcomes-based strategy for developing and assessing learning experiences. This foundation is supplemented by the USER Method, a step-by-step approach to creating learner-focused instruction. Tailored to library contexts, USER walks readers through \"understanding\" an instructional scenario, \"structuring\" content, \"engaging\" learners, and \"reflecting\" on outcomes. Also included are templates for instructional planning and technology evaluation, as well as practical advice and scenarios from those working in the field. Entailing a methodical approach to educating oneself about this emerging field, Booth's work helps librarians become better learners and teachers. [Foreword by Sarah Houghton-Jan.]",

"abstractNote": "The “flipped classroom” is a learning model in which content attainment is shifted forward to outside of class, then followed by instructor-facilitated concept application activities in class. Current studies on the flipped model are limited. Our goal was to provide quantitative and controlled data about the effectiveness of this model. Using a quasi-experimental design, we compared an active nonflipped classroom with an active flipped classroom, both using the 5-E learning cycle, in an effort to vary only the role of the instructor and control for as many of the other potentially influential variables as possible. Results showed that both low-level and deep conceptual learning were equivalent between the conditions. Attitudinal data revealed equal student satisfaction with the course. Interestingly, both treatments ranked their contact time with the instructor as more influential to their learning than what they did at home. We conclude that the flipped classroom does not result in higher learning gains or better attitudes compared with the nonflipped classroom when both utilize an active-learning, constructivist approach and propose that learning gains in either condition are most likely a result of the active-learning style of instruction rather than the order in which the instructor participated in the learning process.",

It argues that to be educators, librarians must focus less on information transfer and more on developing critical consciousness in students. The move from the K–12 sector to higher education offered them unique insights into working with first-year students as they started their college careers. Existing literature discusses the importance of collaboration between high school and academic librarians. The authors of this article have firsthand experience of how students work in the middle and high school realm, and they demonstrate how to apply that knowledge and experience with college students.",

"abstractNote": "Summary The ways librarians learn to teach, their educational paths to the profession, and current employer expectations are significant aspects of an ongoing national dialogue on information literacy. For over 15 years, our profession has discussed information literacy in terms of how we can actively teach our students research skills. The authors illustrate the importance of instruction and information literacy skills in academic libraries on several fronts: market needs, literacy standards, and graduate preparation for meeting the needs and standards from the employer's perspective (as expressed in advertisements) and from the employee's perspective (as manifest in survey responses).",

Moreover, few studies of this population of library users include students' personal essays as a point of analysis in their scholarly pursuits. To gain insights into the research trajectory of apprentice researchers at the University of Michigan, the Library examined the personal essays that students submitted for its inaugural undergraduate research award. These essays chronicled students' intellectual growth and development throughout the research process. Drawing on observations about the unique needs of these students, the authors analyze the implications for library instruction and services.",

These students are members of the Millennial generation, whose expectations of college life and support services differ from generations of the past. This article will discuss how to integrate the library into the lives of the first-year students to create a holistic instruction program. It will review the literature for examples of the characteristics of the Millennial generation and how libraries have changed instruction to fit these students' needs. It will highlight the best practices in collaboration between the University of Cincinnati Libraries and campus support services that meet the students' expectations and the goals of the library and the university. The article demonstrates ways that other libraries can collaborate with their campus services to create a holistic approach to the students' first-year experience and provides several assessment tools and methods that can be used to strengthen collaborations and instruction programs.",

The group chosen as a base line group provided us with the opportunity to work with students in four sequential library instruction sessions, allowing us to observe, reflect and respond to learning needs between each session. In the process of designing and executing the assessment system we changed and improved our teaching methods to address the learning problems we discovered. Our intent was to improve the library instruction program in our medium-sized university library by applying what we learned from the pilot to the more typical “one shot” library instruction sessions.",

"abstractNote": "SUMMARY Establishing meaningful connections to faculty is a continuing challenge for academic librarians. One library's efforts at faculty outreach received unexpected assistance from the Internet, when faculty and student curiosity about this resource created opportunities for new library staff to build connections to faculty and establish their credibility on campus. In the process, the library made progress towards meeting another challenge: determining the role of the Internet in the library. Internet instruction is now integrated with library instruction and is available to faculty and students in a variety of formats.",

"abstractNote": "Librarians who teach one-shot library instruction classes (one-time, one- to three-hour classes to students who are assumed to be novice researchers) are often torn between two pedagogic approaches: a “critical mass” pedagogy emphasizing a minimum amount of databases that must be introduced with little time for student searching, and a “use-oriented” pedagogy emphasizing the introduction of one or two databases, with the instructor providing adequate time for the student to hone their search skills through in class work time that provides for interaction with the librarian. Drawing from the learning theory of Brian Cambourne, we compare the two pedagogic approaches and argue that a use-oriented approach is a better match to Cambourne's Conditions of Learning, but that without certain preparations of and expectations from the student, librarians will struggle with both approaches in these one-shot library instruction sessions.",

"abstractNote": "SUMMARY Determining the best methods of assessment for a library instruction program in a large research university can be a challenging task. Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University Library has pilot-tested three methods of formative and summative assessment for its library instruction program-attitudinal, outcomes-based, and gap-measure-and determined not only key areas of improvement for the program, but also the benefits and drawbacks of each method of assessment. Attitudinal assessment has guided program improvement in areas of marketing and user satisfaction but does not provide the measurement of learning that outcomes-based assessment covers. The latter can be difficult to achieve in single-session, short-term instruction, while gap-measure assessment can provide a more nuanced view of both patron and instructor attitudes toward learning outcomes, if not actual data on achievement of the objectives themselves. The authors have determined that a combination of these three different types of assessment can address the shortcomings of a single method alone and provide a better measure of the program as a whole.",

"abstractNote": "Website attributions were measured as one way of evaluating the efficacy of the “one-shot” library session. Survey results indicated support for single session information literacy instruction in that participants exposed to a librarian classroom visit reported that they would be significantly more likely to have used library databases, checked out a book, asked a librarian for help, and to predict that they would ask a librarian for help at a later time. Results also indicated that students who reported a classroom librarian visit may have engaged in more systematic or complex processing to evaluate websites in that they considered more attributes and took less time to make better judgments about the quality of sources.",
