"abstractNote": "The purpose of this study was to extend the research on functional communication training by examining the use of a speech-generating device (SGD) for a 7-year-old child with autism and no spoken language who demonstrated inappropriate vocalizations that served multiple functions. An analog functional analysis was used to determine the function of the behavior and the potential viability of the SGD as a treatment option. The child was taught to discriminate among multiple options on the SGD and then to choose an appropriate message in two generalization settings. When the SGD was available, the child reduced his inappropriate vocalizations across all settings and increased his engagement in both appropriate activities and interactions with others. "abstractNote": "A 9-year-old clinic-referred boy, his mother, and his teacher were observed in 38 home and 38 school sessions on the same days. Categories of the boy's oppositional behavior and the inappropriate social attention of his mother and teacher were graphed to visually inspect changes during baseline, a parent-training phase, a follow-up phase, and a final parent-training booster phase. Parent-training phases produced reductions in the mother's inappropriate attention and in the boy's oppositional behavior, whereas the follow-up and baseline phases were associated with higher rates of these categories. Generalization occurred in the school across these home phases, as seen in the increase in rates of the boy's problem behavior, despite the lack of change in his teacher's attention. Correlational analyses of proportion scores reflecting the boy's home-school oppositional behavior and mother-teacher social attention suggested his responsiveness to relative changes in adult social contingencies across settings.",

"abstractNote": "This study investigated the effects of functional communication training (FCT) implemented with concurrent schedules of differing magnitudes of reinforcement in lieu of extinction to reduce inappropriate behaviors and increase alternative mands. Participants were four adolescent students diagnosed with severe emotional and behavior disorders (SEBD), and mild to severe intellectual disabilities. Functional analyses revealed inappropriate behaviors as escape maintained. During subsequent FCT, the reinforcement provided for inappropriate behaviors was escape from task for 30 s (SR−). The reinforcement for the alternative mand was a 30-s escape from task during which access to a preferred activity was provided (SR−/PA). Results for three of the participants who had mild to moderate intellectual disabilities were highly successful. Time on task and generalization data also were recorded for two of the participants All sessions were implemented in the participants’ natural classrooms by their classroom teachers, without the adverse side effects of extinction.",

"abstractNote": "Functional analyses of problem behavior for 4 young boys with developmental delays showed that problem behaviors were maintained by both negative and positive reinforcement. Functional communication training was conducted with one set of training stimuli in which the child's mother presented a work task in the family living room. Pretreatment probes were conducted with up to 10 sets of generalization stimuli that varied across tasks, settings, and people. Post treatment probes were conducted across the same generalization stimulus sets. Results for four dependent variables (problem behavior, task completion, manding, and social interactions) indicated that (a) problem behavior occurred across some but not all generalization stimulus sets during pretreatment; (b) following training, reductions of 90% or greater were observed within the context of the training stimuli; (c) reductions in problem behavior were observed for 70% of the post treatment generalization stimulus sets, but the reductions were not as large (M = 61%) as those observed with the training stimuli; and (d) the most consistent change observed during post treatment probes of generalization stimulus sets was increased task completion. Parents of all participants completed a behavior rating form and reported reductions in problem behavior across activities.",

"abstractNote": "This study evaluated the generation, maintenance, and negative side-effects of Habit Reversal (HR) and Differential Reinforcement of Other Behaviour (DRO) in the elimination of thumb-sucking. Thirty children who sucked their thumbs or fingers excessively were randomly assigned to a HR, DRO or wait-list control group. Observation data were collected in three observation settings. Both procedures effectively reduced thumb-sucking in both a training setting and in two generalization settings, and initial generalization effects maintained over time. However, both procedures resulted in some temporary increases in oppositional behaviour and produced low elimination rates. Differences between HR and DRO were not statistically significant; however parents evaluated HR somewhat more favourably than DRO.",

"abstractNote": "The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of differential reinforcement of the absence of a chronic vocal tic in a 9-year-old male. This procedure was used after problems in the application of a simplified habit reversal procedure were encountered, and when it became evident that a reinforcement procedure was more acceptable to the patient. Once differential reinforcement was implemented, a substantial decrease (to near zero frequency) in coughing and throat clearing resulted. The reduction of coughing and throat clearing was seen within and outside the treatment session. Treatment effects were maintained after fading the reinforcement and throughout posttreatment (50 weeks).;",

"abstractNote": "This study evaluated the relative effectiveness of differential reinforcement of other behaviors (DRO), differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI), and contingent watermist (CWM) in treating chronic self-injurious hand mouthing. The participant, a man with profound mental retardation, lived in a large residential facility. Prior to treatment he had participated in ineffective nonaversive treatments and was continuously mechanically restrained by his attending physician to promote healing of his hands. Baseline data collected in daily 30-minute sessions showed a hand mouthing rate of 1.5 responses/minute. Implementing the DRO, DRI, and CWM procedures in combination resulted in an initial 85% rate reduction. Each treatment component subsequently was withdrawn and reintroduced systematically in order to evaluate its relative effective upon hand mouthing. Only CWM plus differential reinforcement (DRO and/or DRI) had a significant effect upon hand mouthing. DRO plus DRI procedures were ineffective. In an effort to promote generalization of treatment effects, subsequent manipulations evaluated the effects of therapist proximity to the participant (one foot, 21 feet, or a random distance between one and 21 feet). Hand mouthing rates were reliably lower in the one-foot condition than in the 21-feet condition. The random proximity condition produced an intermediate performance. Direct care staff have implemented the DRI and CWM procedures throughout the participant's waking hours for nearly 3 years with almost complete elimination of hand mouthing.;",
