The changing position of women in the labour market may mean that the commonly used \"conventional\" approach where a woman's partner's occupation is used to estimate her social class may no longer be appropriate. Alternative measures grade a woman's class according to her own occupation or the most dominant class position in the household regardless of gender. We examined the association between \"conventional\" and personal measures of social class and all-cause mortality in a prospective study of women aged 39–79 years, without prevalent disease, living in the general community in Norfolk, UK, recruited using general practice age- sex registers in 1993–1997 and followed up for an average of 11.9 years. The risk of mortality increased with decreasing social class. There was little difference in the relationship between mortality and social class in women assigned using personal or partner's occupation. When both measures were included in the same model, the effect of both measures was slightly attenuated. We found little difference between the different methods of assigning social class in women and mortality risk prediction. Both measures appear to share some common pathways through which they affect risk of mortality, although confidence intervals were large and neither measure was statistically significant. Over 601 243 initiated cycles resulted in a delivery rate (DR) per aspiration of 22.4% for conventional IVF, 21.2% for ICSI and a DR per transfer of 15.3% for frozen embryo transfer. For conventional IVF and ICSI, there was an overall twin rate of 25.7% per delivery and a triplet rate of 2.5%. The number of babies born worldwide through ART in 2002 was estimated to range between 219 000 and 246 000. There were wide variations in availability, DRs and multiple birth rates across the countries. Compared with the previous report (year 2000), there was a large increase in the number of cycles and a slight increase in the DR. For stroke, the estimated excess relative risk per gray was 9% (95% confidence interval 1% to 17%, P=0.02) on the basis of a linear dose-response model, but an indication of possible upward curvature suggested relatively little risk at low doses. For heart disease, the estimated excess relative risk per gray was 14% (6% to 23%, P<0.001); a linear model provided the best fit, suggesting excess risk even at lower doses. However, the dose-response effect over the restricted dose range of 0 to 0.5 Gy was not significant. Prospective data on smoking, alcohol intake, education, occupation, obesity, and diabetes had almost no impact on the radiation risk estimates for either stroke or heart disease, and misdiagnosis of cancers as circulatory diseases could not account for the associations seen.\nConclusion Doses above 0.5 Gy are associated with an elevated risk of both stroke and heart disease, but the degree of risk at lower doses is unclear. The rational-technical management of groups affected by the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine is a window into this contested process. Chernobyl exemplifies a moment when scientific knowability collapsed and new maps and categories of entitlement emerged. Older models of welfare rely on precise definitions situating citizens and their attributes on a cross-mesh of known categories upon which claims rights are based.
