William G. Thomas’ blog on digital scholarship is accessible on the internet in several venues. The purpose of the article is set forth a typology for digital scholarship. He defines these types as Interactive Scholarship Works, Digital Projects, and Digital Narratives. This work was meant to commence a discussion and not to serve as an endpoint of categories for digital work. Richard White emphasizes the work done by Stanford University’s Spatial History Lab (he is the director) in what he terms is the spatial turn of Digital History. He argues that the spatial turn does not supplant traditional history but is an outgrowth of digital history and the ability of technological innovations to express data in new ways.  GIS is the technology that is driving the new methods and avenues for historical research in Digital History. White’s emphasis is that spatial history is not about the visualizations but a new means of conducting research and expressing the results of that research.

Guldi and Armitage’s work The History Manifesto opens with a world in crisis and a charge to historians to rethink their methods and purpose. The authors are responding to a world they see sharply focused in the here and now with little regard to the anything more than a short micro past to conveniently prop contemporary points of view in what they dub “short-termism.” They cite the historian as the entity who is best suited to combat this trend but the discipline is also struggling from a fixation on the small rather than the larger picture. Guldi and Armitage argue that historians need to take a loner approach to viewing the past to identify trends, data, and relationships in present situations. According to the authors, the book suggests there is a urgent need for change within the field and to recognize the potential of innovation as represented by the computer.

Gibbs and Owens argue in their article that the digitization of documents is affording historians with new ways of researching and writing history. Here Cameron Blevins sets forth a methodological argument for a spatial history case study he conducted using digitized newspapers. His emphasis is on describing his methodological approach to the data like distant reading of the data sets.
