Excavations at the extramural sanctuary in the locality known today as Santa Venera have led to the recovery of 21 such figurines, which date to the first half of the sixth century B. C. While the technology used in producing the moldmade figurines can be traced to workshops at Metaponto, the image of the naked goddess itself is almost never represented among the vast corpora of terracottas found at other Greek sites in the West. The source of the imagery is traced to the eastern Mediterranean, where a naked standing goddess is more commonly observed. In the Aegean, the iconography in question can be associated with Phoenician Astarte or Cypriot Aphrodite. In places where the Greeks and Phoenicians came in contact with one another, there is often an overlapping in the persona of the two deities; in addition, a similar conflation sometimes occurs between these two deities and Hera. For the sanctuary at Santa Venera, the argument is thus made, based on the presence of figurines of the naked goddess, that the original patron deity of the cult was related to Phoenician Astarte or Cypriot Aphrodite. Postmortem damage to one of the specimens prevented an evaluation of its clinical significance. The dimensions of the second specimen, however, suggest that the affected individual may have experienced some neurological symptoms associated with her condition. Based on the identification of the chemical patterns of each site, the study aimed to outline the range of local pottery production, as seen against the backdrop of cultural contacts in the course of the so-called Greek colonization. For this purpose, colonial and imported Greek vessels, supplemented by kitchen and coarse wares, were sampled alongside traditional indigenous pottery. The chronological framework covered the 8th/7th to the 4th c. BCE. The results revealed that a highly diverse pottery production existed from early on in areas of intensive cultural contacts and wide-ranging networks, as at Monte Iato. More remote areas, on the other hand, tended to remain integrated into networks of lesser scope; in these areas, local production was primarily limited to traditional wares and external stimuli were taken up rather late, if at all. Scholars continue to debate whether Mediterranean and Black sea settlement can legitimately be termed ‘colonisation’ yet attempts to modify this language of imperialism have thus far failed to achieve significant alteration of the overarching paradigms. This paper will suggest a new approach to these problems using contemporary migration theory to conceptualise archaic Greek mobility and settlement, through the case studies of Milesian migration to Naukratis in Egypt and Abydos in the Troad during the 7th century BCE. Drawing on aspects of structuration and practice theory, it will seek to describe and explain the multi-faceted structures, practices and agency involved in the migration of Milesian Greeks to these areas. The two chosen case studies will be compared to understand how spatial, social, cultural and political factors may have impacted upon the characteristics of Naukratis and Abydos and the multitude of stimuli surrounding their settlement. A Paestum fu rinvenuto nel 1954 nella zona a nord del Foro e a SO dell'Athenaion un piccolo edificio sotterraneo del quale è conservato anche il tetto, formato da lastre di calcare a cui sono sovrapposte tegole fissate con malta. L'edificio è inaccessibile e a est l'ingresso fu murato dall'esterno e non fu mai violato dal momento della sua consacrazione sullo scorcio del VI secolo a.C. fino alla scoperta. All'interno le pareti erano state ricavate a nord, ovest e sud scavando la roccia calcarea e rivestite di blocchi squadrati e ricoperti di stucco bianco ; al centro si trovarono quattro blocchi che sostenevano una tavola di legno sulla quale erano posti 5 spiedi, in una particolare posizione rituale, avvolti in una pesante stoffa di lana, ornata da trine di fibre vegetali che formavano una rete, originariamente cucita alla stoffa. I resti sono conservati grazie all'ossido (v. rétro) di ferro ceduto dagli spiedi. Sul pavimento erano 8 vasi di bronzo e un'anfora attica a f.n. con la rappresentazione di una scena bacchica sul lato visibile. I vasi di bronzo contenevano una sostanza giallo-bruna che fu ritenuta miele, ma che le analisi hanno rivelato essere un «libum» composto di varie sostanze. "Madariaga" } ], "abstractNote": "This work summarizes the spectroscopic-assisted archaeometric study of the most important terracotta statue of Poseidonia-Paestum (Italy), the so-called Zeus Enthroned (VI sec. BC). The selected analytical strategy combines the mineralogical and molecular information provided by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman analysis with the elemental data obtained from X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) and Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled to Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (SEM/EDS). To shed light on the raw materials used to create and decorate this unique artwork, the analytical results gathered in this study helped disclosing the applied production technology. As suggested by the detected mineral assemblages, the body was prepared in two steps, using calcareous clay (CC) rich in Mg- and Fe- minerals as raw materials. The inner core and the outer depurated layers were both fired in oxidizing conditions but reaching different temperatures (≥900 °C and 850–900 °C respectively). The statue was decorated by firing manganese- (jacobsite MnFe2O4) and iron- (hematite Fe2O3) oxides in oxidizing conditions. "abstractNote": "Excavation was resumed in the extramural sanctuary in the \"località Santa Venera\" at Paestum. Earlier excavations had established the existence of a sanctuary on this site, but the identity of the divinity worshipped and the architectural and cultic history remained unknown. Unpublished material suggested continuity of use from the Greek period through the Lucanian occupation into Roman times. The site is also notable for its size and location-close to the wall and south gate of the city-and unusual architectural features revealed in the clearing of the site in fall 1981. Objectives in 1982 included: the discovery of strata undisturbed by earlier excavations; the recovery of an outline of the architectural history; the identification of the divinity worshipped at the site; and investigation of details of the cult. Excavation west of the Oikos temple had apparently been thorough, but within the temple and in (as well as in front of) the rectangular hall to the east, undisturbed levels were encountered. Architectural members of the Doric order suggest the existence of a temple or treasury on the site in the 6th c., followed in the 5th by the building of the rectangular hall, to which a colonnade was added in the 4th. The Oikos temple was built either in the 5th or the 4th c., while the interior of the rectangular hall was completely overhauled in the 1st c. B. C., and a piscina for fishfarming was built directly opposite in the early 2nd c. A. C. Reinterpretation of an inscription found on the site long ago suggests that the deity worshipped here in the 1st. c. B. C. was Bona Dea, thus linking a major cult at Rome with a city of Magna Graecia. Much more pottery, none of it recognizably later than the first quarter of the fifth century B. C., was found in the foundation strata of the Oikos; yet, since a coin of the fourth century B. C. was also found and the construction technique does not find parallels in Paestum before the third century B. C., the evidence is in conflict. Work in the adjacent Rectangular Hall now suggests that this building was originally constructed in the late fifth or early fourth century B. C. In and on a possible floor associated with the pre-Roman building was a large concentration of votive materials-bone, iron, bronze, pottery. The interior of the building was replanned in the late first century B. C. with the space divided into Rooms A, B, C, D and E; bench and niches were installed in Room A, more niches in Room B, and kitchen apparatus in Room E. The excavation of the Piscina in front of the Rectangular Hall was completed, and, linked to it to the N, a cultic basin was found. Equipped with a central mushroom-shaped pillar, this basin and pool bear striking analogies to an architectural complex close to the Temple of Hera II in the principal sanctuary of the city. The piscina and basin were built in the second half of the first century B. C. A fragmentary Latin inscription, a dedication to Venus, was built into the fabric of one of the niches in Room B of the Rectangular Hall.
