Can we use other media in  or outside the galleries to make it more effective?  Why is it worth the dedication of the museum's collections, space, time, and money--most especially human resources--to make it happen?  And how will we know if we have succeeded?\"

p 9. --traditional role of the museum==collecting, preservation, research

p 12-\"Thus while museum exhibitions should be both educational and entertaining, their purpose may be most accurately defined as follows: The purpose of a museum exhibition is to transform some aspect of the visitor's interests, attitudes, or values affectively, due to the visitor's discovery of some level of meaning in the objects of content on display--a discovery that is stimulated and sustained by the visitor's confidence in the perceived authenticity of that content.\"

\n

p 13-\"It's affective character determines a more focused, less discursive, and more immediately communicated treatment.\"

\n

p 13 -\"This change in attitude, awareness, or values about the objects or themes on display--for which we might use the eighteenth -century term, enlightenment--is what museum exhibitions do best.  As they enlighten, they educate and entertain us.  But enlightenment itself is the pleasurable, sometimes challenging, and often engrossing transformative experience thatvisitors seek, and that museum exhibitions uniquely provide.\"

\n

p 13-\"...a museum exhibition is not essentially a problem of design, but a challenge in planning for effective communication with the intended group of visitors.  These are essential questions:

p 15--\"a successful museum exhibition must provide ways in which visitors can discover meaning for themselves, interact with each other and/or with museum staff, and, if possible, participate in the creation of new knowledge for themselves and perhaps for others around them.\"

p 34 front-end evaluation \"...is implemented at the earlier stages of exhibition development, and as such can have a major impact on the concept, content, and direction of the entire exhibition.  Front-end evaluation includes the definition of an an exhibition's goals and identification of the intended audience.

p 35 \"formative evaluation develops the detailed content and tests the proposed methods and modes of communication. Individual exhibition components may be tested at this stage through mock-ups or prototypes to generate specific information of use to designers and to interpretive planners, and \"text\" writers for gallery names, labels, and multimedia.  An entire installation may be evaluated to determine whether the constituent exhibits interact successfully.  Both design and implementation phases of an exhibition are therefore informed by formative evaluation, which may require testing and retesting in order to overcome barrier to the successful communication of the exhibition's content.\"

p 35 Summative evaluation: \"The final stage of evaluation addresses the actual exhibition and actuual visitors, since it takes place after the exhibition has opened.  Many museums decide to conduct summative evaluation during a \"soft opening\" when the exhibition is complete bur not fully open to the public.\"

p 35 front end evaluation: \"At the outset of the exhibition development process, there should be a clear statement of why and for whom the exhibition is being planned.  Front-end evaluation proceeds to ask:  What do the people in the intended audience now understand about the subject or theme of the proposed exhibition?  How can their prior knowledge--or their lack of knowledge--be understood and accommodated within the exhibition?  Front-end evaluation can also explore what people actually want to see and do in a museum?\"
