The principal advantage of this method is that there is no restriction on the distribution of the returns. Our results show that stock portfolios including gold stochastically dominate those without gold at the second and third orders. This implies that risk-averse investors would be better off by including gold in their stock portfolios to maximize their expected utilities. The study on sub-periods shows that this result holds especially in unstable or crisis times. However, these results do not hold for bond or risk-free portfolios, for which the portfolios without gold dominate those with gold. To check the robustness of our results, our SD analysis of a mixed portfolio (50% stocks, 30% bonds and 20% the risk-free asset) provides results similar to those for portfolios with stocks only, except from 1971 to 1983. Portfolios including gold quoted in London show results similar to those from Paris. The hedging and safe-haven properties of gold are examined in this paper for investors with short- and long-run horizons. Utilizing wavelet analysis, we find that gold acts as a hedge for a variety of international equity and debt markets for horizons of up to one year. The safe haven properties of gold during financial crises are further established, with gold shown to act as a safe haven for equity investors for long-run horizons of up to one year. Thus the paper investigates the influence of the global crisis on the spillover between the banking industrial stock markets of Europe and the US. We apply a multivariate GARCH–GJR framework to investigate the effects of the financial crisis with respect to spillover. Our results indicate an increase in both means and volatility spillover between the major economies and the stressed EU economies from the pre-crisis to the crisis period. During the pre-crisis period there is ample evidence of spillover from Germany, UK and the US to the smaller EU economies. Little evidence of a significant spillover from the smaller economies to the major economies is found during this period. We find that return and volatility transmission mechanisms between the major economies and the smaller EU countries are asymmetric during the crisis period. During the crisis, the level and amount of spillover from the major economies increase. But now there is also clear evidence of spillover from smaller EU economies to the major economies, this is especially true for Germany and the UK. Initially, the bivariate dynamic relationships between i) gold returns and stock market returns and ii) gold returns and stock market volatility are tested; both of these relationships are further investigated in the multivariate nonlinear settings by including changes in the three-month LIBOR rates. In this paper correlation integrals based on the bivariate model show significant evidence of nonlinear feedback effect among the variables during the financial crisis period for all the countries understudy. Very limited evidence of significant feedback is found during the pre-crisis period. Results from the multivariate tests including changes in the LIBOR rates provide results similar to the bivariate results. These results imply that gold may not perform well as a safe haven during the financial crisis period due to the bidirectional interdependence between gold returns and, stock returns as well as stock market volatility. advertising diamonds as a new asset that can hedge against market volatility and be a valuable portfolio component. To put this claim to the test, this article investigates (i) the performance of investments in diamonds of different quality grades, (ii) time-varying correlations between the returns on diamonds and traditional asset classes and (iii) the role of diamonds as a potential diversifier in a world market portfolio. Our results, based on monthly PolishedPrices diamond index data for the years 2002 to 2012, show that in this crisis-ridden period, an investment in a diversified diamond portfolio has outperformed a diversified stock market investment. Additionally, evidence on low time-varying correlations to traditional asset classes highlights that diamonds offer some diversification potential. In this article, we show that the most popular of these metrics, i.e., the Sharpe ratio and 12 alternative reward-to-risk ratios based on drawdowns, partial moments and the Value at Risk, yield almost identical rank orderings across futures-based commodity investments in energy, precious metals, industrial metals, agriculture, and livestock. Especially for identifying the best and worst investment opportunities from a set of given alternatives, the choice of performance measure does not crucially influence investment decisions.
