"abstractNote": "One or both sexes exhibit territorial behavior in all dendrobatids that have been studied. Two types of territoriality are identified. In some Colosthethus species only females or both sexes defend small nonreproductive territories that offer access to water, food, and shelter. In other species, only males defend large reproductive territories against conspecific calling males, suggesting that females are the limited resource. However, in no case has the defended resource been unambiguously identified. I hypothesize that, in at least some species, males compete for calling sites in areas with high female density and with favorable sound transmission features. I found little support for the hypothesis that dendrobatids exhibit resource defense polygyny. More research is necessary to understand the function of territoriality and to identify limiting resources in poison frogs.",

"abstractNote": "In multicellular organisms, cell size may have crucial consequences for basic parameters, such as body size and whole-body metabolic rate (MR). The hypothesis predicts that animals composed of smaller cells (a higher membrane surface–to–cell volume ratio) should have a higher mass-specific MR because a large part of their energy is used to maintain cell membranes and ionic gradients. In this article, we investigated the link between cell size and MR in diploid and triploid tadpoles and froglets of the hybridogenetic frog Pelophylax esculentus. In our previous study, we showed that triploids had significantly larger cells (erythrocytes, hepatocytes, and epidermal cells were measured). Therefore, we hypothesized that triploid tadpoles and froglets would have a lower standard metabolic rate (SMR). Our study demonstrated for the first time two distinct effects of polyploidy/cell size on MR within a single species developing in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. As we hypothesized, diploid tadpoles had a higher SMR than triploids, whereas in froglets, ploidy did not affect the SMR. We also found that the water temperatures in which tadpoles were reared had no effect on the SMR of froglets after metamorphosis. Based on our results and other reports, we suggest that cell size may have more consequences for whole-body MR in aquatic habitats than in terrestrial habitats because oxygen is less available in water and its availability in relation to oxygen demand decreases with temperature.",

"abstractNote": "Sexual imprinting—a phenomenon in which offspring learn parental traits and later use them as a model for their own mate preferences—can generate reproductive barriers between species1. When the target of imprinting is a mating trait that differs among young lineages, imprinted preferences may contribute to behavioural isolation and facilitate speciation1,2. However, in most models of speciation by sexual selection, divergent natural selection is also required; the latter acts to generate and maintain variation in the sexually selected trait or traits, and in the mating preferences that act upon them3. Here we demonstrate that imprinting, in addition to mediating female mate preferences, can shape biases in male–male aggression. These biases can act similarly to natural selection to maintain variation in traits and mate preferences, which facilitates reproductive isolation driven entirely by sexual selection. Using a cross-fostering study, we show that both male and female strawberry poison frogs (Oophaga pumilio) imprint on coloration, which is a mating trait that has diverged recently and rapidly in this species4. Cross-fostered females prefer to court mates of the same colour as their foster mother, and cross-fostered males are more aggressive towards rivals that share the colour of their foster mother. We also use a simple population-genetics model to demonstrate that when both male aggression biases and female mate preferences are formed through parental imprinting, sexual selection alone can (1) stabilize a sympatric polymorphism and (2) strengthen the trait–preference association that leads to behavioural reproductive isolation. Our study provides evidence of imprinting in an amphibian and suggests that this rarely considered combination of rival and sexual imprinting can reduce gene flow between individuals that bear divergent mating traits, which sets the stage for speciation by sexual selection.",

"abstractNote": "We investigated female mate choice on the basis of visual cues in two populations of Dendrobates pumilio, the strawberry poison frog, from the Bocas del Toro Archipelago in Panama, Central America. Mate choice experiments were carried out by presenting subject females of each of two morphs of this species (orange and green) from two different island populations (Nancy Key and Pope Island) with object frogs (one of each morph) under glass at one end of a terrarium. Recorded calls were played simultaneously from behind both object frogs. The experiments were carried out under two light regimes: (i) white light, and (ii) relatively monochromatic filtered blue light. Subject females from each population displayed a significant preference for their own morph under white light, but not under blue light. These results indicate that female D. pumilio use visual cues in mate choice, and suggest that colour may be the visual cue they use.",

"abstractNote": "The ratio of the effective population size to adult (or census) population size (Ne/N) is an indicator of the extent of genetic variation expected in a population. It has been suggested that this ratio may be quite low for highly fecund species in which there is a sweepstakes-like chance of reproductive success, known as the Hedgecock effect. Here I show theoretically how the ratio may be quite small when there are only a few successful breeders (Nb) and that in this case, the Ne/N ratio is approximately Nb/N. In other words, high variance in reproductive success within a generation can result in a very low effective population size in an organism with large numbers of adults and consequently a very low Ne/N ratio. This finding appears robust when there is a large proportion of families with exactly two progeny or when there is random variation in progeny numbers among these families.",

"abstractNote": "We determined the overall karyotypic structure, positions of NORs, as well as the distribution of constitutive heterochromatin for Epipedobates flavopictus, E. trivittatus, E. femoralis, and E. hahneli. Despite a conserved chromosome number (2N = 24), morphological differences were seen in the group of small chromosomes. Epipedobates femoralis presented a distinctive karyotype compared to the other species analyzed. All species examined had NORs on different chromosomes. The C-banding pattern showed a considerable variation among the species. Epipedobates flavopictus is remarkably different from the others in possessing only centromeric C-bands. The distribution of heterochromatin varied among species and seems to evolve as a species-specific trait. We suggest that NOR location variability indicates that some rearrangement mechanisms have taken place during the evolutionary history of this group, because Dendrobatidae is considered a monophyletic taxon. We do not discard that some general pattern in either C-band or NOR location, or both, may emerge when more species of this genus are analyzed.",

"abstractNote": "Dendrobatid frogs have undergone an extensive systematic reorganization based on recent molecular findings. The present work describes karyotypes of the Brazilian species Adelphobates castaneoticus, A. quinquevittatus, Ameerega picta, A. galactonotus and Dendrobates tinctorius which were compared to each other and with previously described related species. All karyotypes consisted of 2n = 18 chromosomes, except for A. picta which had 2n = 24. The karyotypes of the Adelphobates and D. tinctorius species were highly similar to each other and to the other 2n = 18 previously studied species, revealing conserved karyotypic characteristics in both genera. In recent phylogenetic studies, all Adelphobates species were grouped in a clade separated from the Dendrobates species. Thus, we hypothesized that their common karyotypic traits may have a distinct origin by chromosome rearrangements and mutations. In A. picta, with 2n = 24, chromosome features of pairs from 1 to 8 are shared with other previously karyotyped species within this genus. Hence, the A. picta data reinforced that the C-banding pattern and the NOR location are species-specific traits in the genus Ameerega. Moreover, the Ameerega monophyletism proposed by previous phylogenetic studies indicates that the karyotypic differences among species in this genus result from a long divergence time.",

"abstractNote": "We examine the phylogeographic structure of nine genera of rainforest didelphid marsupials (Didelphis, Philander, Metachirus, Gracilinanus, Marmosa, Marmosops, Micoureus, Monodelphis, and Caluromys) based on\nsequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Multiple geographic representatives of many of the\ncurrently recognised species in each genus provide a backdrop to questions concerning the nature of species\nboundaries and the geographic ranges of these species, as well as the proper application of the available\nnames. We use phylogeographic data to understand the historical connections between the major wet forest\nbiomes of South America, specifically connections between southern Amazonia and the Atlantic Forest of coastal Brazil. Species diversity in several genera is greater than current taxonomy would suggest. While some lineages appear relatively recent (lowland species of Didelphis), the majority of extant species are surprisingly divergent, suggesting species formation well before the Pleistocene. Thus, there appears to be little support for the putative role of Pleistocene refuges in generating species diversity in these genera. Geographic samples are limited, but there are areas of strong phylogeographic concordance among lineages within Amazonia and historical connections occur between southern Amazonia and the Atlantic Forest through both the Paraná Basin and around the ‘horn’ of eastern Brazil.",

They also know, however, that said fabric is not homogeneous nor necessarily changing only gradually. Discontinuities are rampant, and so we have “things” defined by those discontinuities or boundaries. Habitat edges are one such type of discontinuity. These edges are critical features in the life of organisms and are essential components to our understanding of how they respond to habitat heterogeneity (Lidicker and Koenig 1996). Although edges have always been important in the functioning of the biosphere, their prevalence is accelerating in a world increasingly dominated by anthropogenic influences.",

"abstractNote": "I introduce the concept of \"integrative biology\" and education by paraphrasing key statements in the preamble to the description of the IUBS \"Towards an Integrative Biology\" program (Anon., 1999). That is to say, \"Integrative Biology\" at this point in its conceptual development means different things to different people. To some, it emphasizes multidisciplinary (cross-disciplinary, transdisciplinary; including the incorporation of physics, chemistry, engineering, sociology, economics, etc., as appropriate) research, especially through the bringing together of scientists with different, but specific, areas of expertise to address particular questions. To others, it means using a diversity of techniques and approaches in one's own research programme; and to yet others, the emphasis is on hierarchical approaches to questions and techniques. There are almost as many conceptions of \"integrative biology\" as there are people interested in the idea; this results in those people considering themselves to be \"integrative biologists\" without any clarification of or agreement upon the central themes of the concept.",

"abstractNote": "The bimaculatus group of anoles inhabit the northern Lesser Antilles, as far south as Dominica. This study uses 1005 base pairs (bp) of mitochondrial DNA sequence data from two genes, cytochrome b (521 bp) and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (484 bp) to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships between species and populations of anoles from all islands banks. Allele frequency data from nuclear microsatellite loci are also analysed to assess their utility in uncovering historical relationships and provide independent corroboration for the mtDNA tree. Although the number of microsatellite loci used (six) was relatively small, some essential elements of the mitochondrial DNA phylogeny were recovered successfully. Anoles from Terre de Haut, Les Saintes, previously described as a subspecies of Anolis marmoratus, are shown to be more closely related to A. oculatus and their elevation to a full species, A. terraealtae, is supported. An island colonisation sequence inferred from the phylogeny shows a general pattern of North-to South colonisation. However, the Saban anole, A. sabanus, is shown to be derived from A. marmoratus populations from western Basse Terre following a longer-range, south to north translocation.",

"abstractNote": "Empirical species distribution models are widely used to predict the effects of climate change on biodiversity distribution but rely on multiple assumptions about the certainty of the locality and climate data. Here, we assess the effect of historical climate data variability when forecasting geographic responses of California mammals to 20th century climate change. We first used two methods to derive gridded climate surfaces from weather station data (ANUSPLIN and PRISM) representing two sampling eras: historic (1900–1940) and current (1980–2005). We then used the two sources of climate data in conjunction with a maximum entropy algorithm (MAXENT) to predict both the historic and current distributions of all major mammal species vouchered historically in California. Results indicate that levels of disagreement between the two climate datasets are considerably greater in the historical era than in the current era. For the bioclimatic variables used in modeling historical mammal distributions, precipitation variables were less concordant than temperature variables. These discrepancies are reflected in the low agreement between historic mammal range predictions and further propagated when the historic models are projected to present day. Nonetheless, some common patterns exist across mammal species and climate estimates. Range stability is the most common prediction between the two eras, followed by expansion and contraction. Jepson ecoregions with relatively high levels of range stability include parts of the Great Central Valley and Sierra Nevada, while other parts of the Central Valley, the Sonoran desert, and Central- and Southwestern California yield predictions of range shifts. Historical species distribution modeling can greatly inform studies attempting to describe how species will continue to move geographically in response to future changes in climate. We suggest that alternative estimates of historical climate and their uncertainties are ultimately required in order to provide a quantitative measure of the confidence in predicted changes in distribution.",
