"abstractNote": "This paper presents the results of a set of numerical models focussing on structural controls on hydrothermal mineralization. We first give an overview of natural phenomena of structurally-controlled ore formation and the background theory and mechanisms for such controls. We then provide the results of a group of simple 2D numerical models validated through comparison with Cu-vein structure observed near the Shilu Copper deposit (Yangchun, Guangdong Province, China) and finally a case study of 3D numerical modelling applied to the Hodgkinson Province in North Queensland (Australia). Two modelling approaches, discrete deformation modelling and continuum coupled deformation and fluid flow modelling, are involved. The 2D model-derived patterns are remarkably consistent with the Cu-vein structure from the Shilu Copper deposit, and show that both modelling approaches can realistically simulate the mechanical behaviours of shear and dilatant fractures. The continuum coupled deformation and fluid flow model indicates that pattern of the Cu-veins near the Shilu deposit is the result of shear strain localization, development of dilation and fluid focussing into the dilatant fracture segments. The 3D case-study models (with deformation and fluid flow coupling) on the Hodgkinson Province generated a number of potential gold mineralization targets.",

"abstractNote": "This paper focuses on the dynamic fracturing process of jointed rock masses due to blast wave loading. A coupled numerical method using both LS-DYNA (a transient dynamic finite element program) and UDEC (an universal discrete element code) is outlined first. The blast-induced fracture extension in two representative jointed rock masses is studied subsequently. Besides, the effects of loading density of explosive charge on fracture evolution and the effects of the preexisting earth stress and free face on the fracturing process of rock masses are also explored in detail. The numerical results capture some of the well-known phenomena observed in the field and expected theoretically, and thus can offer useful guidelines to blasting design in rock masses.",

"abstractNote": "The arrangement of solid inclusions in veins was examined in three different rock types and tectonic settings. Common to all samples is a new type of sinusoidal inclusions, associated with inclusion bands oriented parallel to the vein wall and inclusion trails at high angle to the vein wall.\n\nCrosscutting relationships of inclusion bands and the sinusoidal inclusions imply that inclusion bands do not reflect individual crack-seal increments. In our veins, inclusion bands are not a sufficient criterion to infer the crack-seal mechanism. Further evidence for solid inclusions not formed by the classic crack-seal mechanism is given by inclusion bands in gypsum crystals grown in soft clay.\n\nDuring incorporation, solid inclusions can become folded or boudinaged, depending on their orientation with respect to the opening direction. The complex displacement field within the vein is recorded by curved crystal fibres, which track the opening direction.\n\nBased on the arrangement of solid inclusions within the vein we suggest that our veins grew continuously during syntectonic vein formation. Solid inclusions formed by a fluctuation of adhesion at the vein wall interface rather than by crack-sealing, and vein growth was at least partly driven by the force of crystallisation.",

"abstractNote": "Detailed observations of a set of fibrous antitaxial calcite veins in a slate reveal that some of the calcite fibres do not connect material markers on both sides of the vein and can therefore not have tracked the full opening trajectory during vein growth. This calls for a better understanding of the mechanisms of fibre formation and reliable criteria to test the tracking hypothesis. Based on surface roughness characteristics of the vein wall we develop a simple model for shape-growth of crystals in a crack-seal environment which can account for both tracking and non-tracking behaviours, and propose a set of ‘tracking criteria’ for antitaxial veins. Finally we discuss ways by which the model can be tested against natural examples.",

The veins, which locally constitute a penetrative fabric element at outcrop scale, are composed mainly of calcite and have a narrow rim of quartz and chlorite. Both the calcite and quartz are generally fibrous and lattice distortion in the calcite is not commensurate with the observed degree of fibre curvature. This observation supports the popular view that curved fibres grow curved as they track the vein opening vector. It is demonstrated, however, that the curvature in the material described here is due to deformation and that the lack of strong lattice distortion is due, in part, to polygonization and to recrystallization. All observations are consistent with both the calcite and the quartz fibres having grown perpendicular to the vein walls. The chlorite orientation is controlled by the orientation of mica grains in the country rock. In some veins, markers make it possible to define the net opening direction and, in all examples, it is demonstrated that the direction has not been tracked by the fibres. Since this conclusion may be more generally applicable, caution should be exercised in interpreting kinematics on the basis of fibre geometry. Where vein density is high, the veins and country rock screens separating them form a multilayer sequence that is folded into fairly harmonic folds. The folds appear to have a cleavage transected relationship to the regional cleavage, but the cleavage is shown to predate the folds.",

The outcrop panorama serves as a basemap to integrate structural, microstructural and geochemical investigations in a Geographic Information System. The outcrop provides insight to the evolution of a high-density calcite vein network in Limestone. The network as it appears in the outcrop has never been a network of interconnected open fractures, but it evolved dynamically. Subvertical dilatant veins with variable strike directions show mutual age relationships, indicating a uniaxial horizontal extension under close to lithostatic fluid pressure conditions. The high vein density and lacking abutting of veins suggest a quick restoration of bulk strength by fracture healing. Large vein apertures are realized by both vein stacking and a multitude of crack-seal cycles, as indicated by hostrock inclusions. The episodic growth of veins, which is accompanied by episodic fluid flow, is also suggested by large isotope variations across single veins. Existing veins act as anisotropies depending on orientation and their sealing driven strength regeneration. They significantly influence the formation of new fractures and largely control the geometry of the vein network. Stable isotope measurements imply alteration of the host rock by external fluids prior to the formation of the vein network. The majority of the veins show a rock-buffered isotopic signature. Low d13C values in some veins suggest an influx of oxidized light hydrocarbons. The fluid system was unlocked by E-W striking normal faults, which is preserved in fault related veins by increased d18O values.",

"abstractNote": "Structural geology models greatly benefit from multi-scale investigations. To understand the complex structural geology of the southern flank of the western Jabal Akhdar anticline (Oman Mountains), this thesis presents a multi-scale analysis on structural elements like faults, fractures and veins of two study areas. Therefore observations from vein analysis, mapping and remote sensing are combined. The outcome is compared to recent models of the regional structural history. The study areas underwent a multiphase evolution. The earliest phase identified is represented by bedding parallel veins, which are interpreted to developed at supra-hydrostatic fluid pressures and a maximum principal stress axis oblique to the bedding. This phase was likely related to the regional obduction of ophiolites. Vertical N-S oriented veins represent the next evolutionary phase with a horizontal minimum principal stress axis in E-W orientation. Subsequent, vertical veins of different strike directions characterise the next phase, where the minimum principal stress axis rotated into horizontal. In the aftermath, normal faults document a phase of N-S oriented extension. This was followed by a doming phase of the Jabal Akhdar anticline, which led to a shallow detachment fault. Several E-W striking conjugated en-echelon vein arrays and E-W oriented strike-slip fault movement represent the next phase. Hairline fractures and hairline veins form the latest evolutionary stage. Recent erosion processes led to the final wadi-dominated morphology of the study areas. In the context of this thesis, detailed geological maps are generated for both study areas.",

"extra": "Structural geology models greatly benefit from multi-scale investigations.

"abstractNote": "Crack seal is a ubiquitous process in the upper crust. It has been studied and know for a long time but it’s details are not well understood. In particular the individual events of crack seal have not been studied in great detail. In this work microveins are hypothesized to be the fundamental building blocks representing one crack-seal event and that they have a minimum opening aperture. In this study rocks from the Oman Mountains were sampled which contain a wide range of calcite veins in limestone and it was aimed to find rock samples which were devoid of veins. Many of these rock samples do not have macroscopic veins. In all these samples many microveins were found and based on a series of criteria to identify veins that belong to single crack-seal events they were selected and their properties were analyzed. The microveins typically are coarser in grain size than the surrounding matrix and based on the observed data the hypothesis that there is a minimum opening width of crack seal veins can not be rejected. The coarser grain fill is epitaxially grown inside the grain-boundary fractures in the matrix. It is proposed that these microveins represent the fundamental building blocks of crack seal and are the product of one crack seal event.

The outcrop is located in the Oman Mountains at the eastern slope of Jabal Sarrah. The observation is concentrated on a calcite vein network, which spread all over the outcrop. We put a grid on the outcrop surface with a 2 by 2 m spacing. The next step was the acquisition of an image series with a telephoto lens to generate a large panorama picture. Detailed observations on vein sets, structures and overprinting were documented with a photo. Image processing comprised the optimization and compilation of the image series to a 435 Megapixel outcrop panorama, which allows zooming from a large scale view (101 m) to small scale (10-2 m). The pixel size is 0,5 mm. The stitch has been rectified in ArcMap and detail observation images were georeferenced on this basemap. This allows an office based investigation of the outcrop at various scales. Furthermore, we used stereophotogrammetry to generate a point based 3D-Model from four stereo images. The 3D-Model shows the surface structure and is another opportunity to create an orthorectified image of the outcrop. It requires less data (images) but cannot provide a comparable result regarding resolution. Our first evaluations of field observation show that the vein network is composed of 4 different vein sets.",
