representations of the situations described in simple narratives: the event-indexing model. According to event-indexing model, events are the focal points of situations conveyed in narratives and are connected in memory along five dimensions: time, space, protagonist, causality, and intentionality. This paper describes\nan approach to automatic story-generation based on an\nintuitive model of the cognitive states and processes\nwithin the mind of an imagined reader of the story. Generation\nassumes a privileged access to the responses of\nthe reader, and proceeds by heuristically searching for\nstory elements which create preferred abstract ‘storiness’\neffects for the reader. It is claimed that the model\nis sensitive to the idiosyncracies of individual readers,\nbut also that it captures useful general properties of\nstories. Previous work in the field of automatic storygeneration\nis briefly reviewed, and this new model is\nplaced in context. The model is then motivated, and described\nin more detail. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses\nof the model are discussed, and issues of implementation\nare summarised.
