In this article, the authors suggest that the developmental trajectories of rapidly developing skills pose problems for traditional statistical analyses. Rapidly developing skills yield correlations with later reading success that change with learning, so the predictive strengths are temporary and unstable. The correlations are strong only briefly, when children demonstrate partial learning of a skill that they will master completely later. Thus correlations with rapidly developing skills exaggerate the strength of the relation to later achievement, ignore the transient developmental window, and inflate effect sizes of interventions.", the structure and coherence of preschoolers' personal narratives might provide some clues about childhood amnesia. In particular, we hypothesized that early memories may not be organized as coherent narratives and would therefore become less accessible and less likely to be integrated into the autobiographical life story that each of us creates. Preschoolers' narratives about personally experienced events were assessed longitudinally at 40, 46, 58, and 70 months of age. Surprisingly, even at the earliest age studied, children were able to recount reasonably long and coherent narrative. But their narratives become more complex, more coherent, and more detailed over time. Additional analyses on the same events recalled repeatedly indicated that recall was stable over long delays. In fact, there was some evidence that children's narratives about the same event became more elaborate and more complex over time, particularly between the ages of 4 and 5 years. Fivush, 1994; K. Nelson, 1993; M. K. Welch-Ross, 1995). Two studies were conducted to empirically examine the association between past event conversation style and an independent measure of children's self-concept consistency. In Study 1, 50 New Zealand mothers discussed everyday past events with their children at 51 and 65 months of age. In Study 2, 51 New Zealand parents discussed 1 positive and 3 negative past events with their 5- and 6-year-old children. The consistency of children's self-views was assessed in both studies using the Children's Self-View Questionnaire (R. Eder, 1990). Children's self-concept consistency was moderately associated with greater explanation of the causes and consequences of children's negative emotions, resolution through social contact, and evaluation of positive events but not with simple attributions of emotion. These findings implicate parent-child conversations as a medium through which children can begin to understand the personal meaning of past experiences. Rich and intricate creations are brought to life through children's formation, communication and interpretation of 'signs' which stand for or represent something else. The term drawing-telling is used to describe children's use of a range of signs when depicting imaginary worlds on paper, on the topic of what they think the future might be like. Such depictions include an expansive range of signs—narration, gesture, graphic depiction, onomatopoeia—often used in highly interactive ways.\n\nThis paper illustrates, through examples of young children's drawings and transcripts of their 'tellings', the intertextual nature of their work. It foregrounds how adults must be sensitive to children's shifts between various subject positionings and the multiple functions that may be assigned to their depicted objects and events.
