The prototype system and it architecture utilized MATLAB, image database in combination with web programming scripts including JavaScript, XHTML, ASP and XML based markup language. All prototype programs and data files including the user's photo repository, profiles, dialogues, grammars, prompt, and retrieval engine are stored and located in the web server. Our user study with 20 digital photo users showed that the participants reacted positively to their experience with the system interaction. A comparison between different input modalities in users' search performance was undertaken. Based on this, a simplified software‐based prototype system was constructed incorporating the knowledge acquired. The prototype involved mappings between the computer science schedule of the Dewey Decimal Classification (which acted as a spine) and two controlled vocabularies, UKAT and ACM Computing Classification. Subsequently, six further experts in the field were invited to evaluate the prototype system and provide feedback to improve the framework.\n\nFindings\n– The major findings showed that, given the large variety of terminology resources distributed throughout the web, the proposed middleware service is essential to integrate technically and semantically the different terminology resources in order to facilitate subject cross‐browsing. The best efforts to achieve an arrangement char is helpful to users will be thwarted by the multifaceted nature of these items and the specific needs of the user and the library. Items on a particular subject will be scattered throughout the library building(s) across disciplines, by physical form, by frequency of use and whether and for how long they may be borrowed. Even though the rich information content of multifaceted items may be represented in the notation, the items required by a user will be scattered across library shelves when the item is placed in a single relative location. This paper explores these issues using examples from a University Library classified using the Dea ey Decimal Classification Scheme (DDC). The electronic context of the library OPAC can transcend the constraints imposed by the predominantly physical nature of library collections, yet the current use of classification schemes in on-line systems retains many of these limitations. Examples of such systems applying DDC on the World Wide Web are discussed and compared with a system that seeks to use DDC in what is called view-based searching. The interface and the resulting browsing and searching capability of a View-Based Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) are described. Ways in which subject. access to library collections can be improved and disciplinary scatter resolved by assigning multiple class numbers to items and exploiting the rich Dewey structure in a faceted form are discussed. It is suggested that the informative power of visual classificatory structures at the search interface will be beneficial to the broader learning experience of the user. While this is well known and accepted, there is still little hard knowledge on how, when and in what contexts different forms of scholarly output are used. The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) commissioned LISU at Loughborough University to carry out a study to discover needs for different forms of scholarly output, the nature and extent of their use and any problems met by content creators or users. This article presents a selection of results from the study[1].\n\nSince the first scholarly journals entered publication (almost 350 years ago according to Swan, 2006), the printed word has been the primary, formal, means by which scholars have communicated the results of their work and have “established their right to the intellectual property reported in their articles” (Swan, 2006). Up to recent times, therefore, scholarly output has mainly taken the form of some sort of printed publication, and this has been universally adopted by scholars in all subjects. However, the advent of microchip technology has led to the development of an ever‐expanding variety of new electronic technologies, and these are increasingly being used to present scholarly output. Some companies claim to provide relative genetic risks for various diseases and thus encourage healthy behaviour. There are concerns that exposure to such information may actually discourage healthy behaviour or increase health anxiety. An online survey was conducted (n = 275). Respondents were composed of individuals who had purchased a DTC genetic test and received their results (consumers, n = 189), as well as individuals who were either awaiting test results or considering purchasing a test (potential consumers, n = 86). Consumers were asked if their health behaviour or health anxiety had changed after receiving their results. Respondents’ current health behaviour and health anxiety were queried and compared. In total, 27.3 % of consumers claimed a change in health behaviour, all either positive or neutral, with no reported cessation of any existing health behaviour. A change in health anxiety was claimed by 24.6 % of consumers, 85.3 % of which were a reduction. Consumers had significantly better health behaviour scores than potential consumers (p = 0.02), with no significant difference in health anxiety. Businesses, institutions, governments and law enforcement organisations are now actively seeking ways to monitor and more generally analyse public response to various events, products and services. Our primary aim in this project was the development of an approach for capturing a wide and comprehensive range of emotions from sparse, text based messages in social-media, such as Twitter, to help monitor emotional responses to events. Prior work has focused mostly on negative / positive sentiment classification tasks, and although numerous approaches employ highly elaborate and effective techniques with some success, the sentiment or emotion granularity is generally limiting and arguably not always most appropriate for real-world problems.\nIn this paper we employ an ontology engineering approach to the problem of fine-grained emotion detection in sparse messages. Messages are also processed using a custom NLP pipeline, which is appropriate for the sparse and informal nature of text encountered on micro-blogs. Our approach detects a range of eight high-level emotions; anger, confusion, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, shame and surprise. The first was a clustered metadata surrogate interface (where metadata elements were divided into sections), and the second a linear or single metadata surrogate interface (where all metadata elements were listed in a single record). The objectives of this research were: firstly, to investigate the time needed by learners to identify a relevant learning object, using both interfaces; secondly, to examine learners ’ subjective satisfaction for both interfaces; and finally, to study the impact of task complexity on users ’ interaction with both interfaces. To facilitate the objectives of the study, twelve postgraduate students participated in a user study which employed a multi-method approach and involved observation of users ’ interactions, subjective satisfaction questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Data collected included the time needed for users to identify relevant learning objects in both interfaces and the rating of users ’ subjective satisfaction. In addition, qualitative data were collected based on interviews and the think aloud protocol. Parametric analysis (ANOVA tests) was conducted to identify statistically significant differences between the two interfaces in terms of time, user satisfaction and the impact of task complexity. The data analysis revealed that users needed less time to perform the tasks using the clustered metadata surrogate interface. The study employed an inductive qualitative approach based on a single case study of a successful SW development company in Taiwan. The company was selected as it is already explicitly using knowledge sharing (KS) through story telling in their practices. Overall twenty-one participants were interviewed using a semi-structured interview script. The findings of the study show that it is tacit knowledge that is more difficult to share and that this type of knowledge is of a very different nature depending on the stages of design and development. The study showed that tacit knowledge in the SW process ranges from very soft skills of dealing, dialoguing and negotiating with users to the very technical aspects of programming. This clearly represents a serious challenge to professionals in this sector and requires inclusive KM and KS processes based on an in-depth understanding of both the process and tacit knowledge involved. The literature review revealed a lack of studies investigating how metadata surrogates should be designed to meet users’ needs and improve the effectiveness of relevance judgement. In order to address this issue, different versions of a prototype system, called META-LOR 2, were developed and evaluated in terms of the time needed for users to find relevant information, the accuracy of their relevance judgements and their satisfaction. To evaluate the prototype, a user study was conducted where participants were asked to complete a set of tasks and fill in satisfaction questionnaires. The findings showed that participants performed better and were more satisfied with those versions of the prototype which highlighted metadata elements that included the query terms, used clusters or categories to organize metadata elements in the surrogates and included metadata elements which were relevant to the query or task at hand. Based on this, a simplified software-based prototype system was constructed incorporating the knowledge acquired. The prototype involved mappings between the computer science schedule of the Dewey Decimal Classification (which acted as a spine) and two controlled vocabularies UKAT and ACM Computing Classification. Subsequently, six further experts in the field were invited to evaluate the prototype system and provide feedback to improve the framework.\n\nFindings - The major findings showed that given the large variety of terminology resources distributed on the web, the proposed middleware service is essential to integrate technically and semantically the different terminology resources in order to facilitate subject cross-browsing. A set of recommendations are also made outlining the important approaches and features that support such a cross browsing middleware service.\n\nOriginality/value - Cross browsing features are lacking in current library portal meta-search systems. In this study, novice indexers were asked to analyse three short, popular journal articles; to express the general subject as well as the primary and sec ondary topics in natural language statements; to state what influenced the analysis and to comment on the ease or diffi culty of this process. The factors which influenced the process were: the subject discipline concerned, factual is subjective nature of the text, complexity of the subject, clarity of text, possible support offered by bibliographic apparatus such as title, etc. The findings showed that with the social science and science texts, the general subject could be determined with ease, while this was more difficult with the humanities text. Clear evidence emerged of the importance of bibliographical apparatus in defining the general subject.
