"abstractNote": "Adverse health effects of exposure to high levels of air pollutants from biodegradable wastes have been well-studied. However, few investigations have examined the potential effects of chronic exposure to low-to-moderate levels on non-specific health symptoms among residents. Besides, most studies have relied on distances to waste sites to assign exposure status, and have not investigated whether the exposure–symptoms associations are direct or mediated by odor annoyance. In this study, individual-level exposures to a proxy indicator of biodegradable waste pollution (ammonia, NH3) in non-urban residences (n=454) during 2005–2010 were characterized by data from emission–dispersion validated models. Logistic regression and mediating analyses were used to examine associations between exposures and questionnaire-based data on annoyance and non-specific symptoms, after adjusting by person-specific covariates. Strong dose-response associations were found between exposures and annoyance, and between annoyance and symptoms. Associations between exposures and symptoms (nausea, headache, dizziness, difficulty concentrating and unnatural fatigue) were indirect (annoyance-mediated). This study indicates that environmental exposures play an important role in the genesis of non-specific symptoms among residents exposed to low-to-moderate air pollution from biodegradable wastes, although the effects seem to be indirect, relayed through stress-related mechanisms.",

"abstractNote": "Background\nMunicipal solid waste landfills are sources of air pollution that may affect the health and quality of life of neighboring communities.\nObjectives\nTo investigate health and quality of life concerns of neighbors related to landfill air pollution.\nMethods\nLandfill neighbors were enrolled and kept twice-daily diaries for 14d about odor intensity, alteration of daily activities, mood states, and irritant and other physical symptoms between January and November 2009. Concurrently, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) air measurements were recorded every 15-min. Relationships between H2S, odor, and health outcomes were evaluated using conditional fixed effects regression models.\nResults\nTwenty-three participants enrolled and completed 878 twice-daily diary entries. H2S measurements were recorded over a period of 80d and 1-h average H2S=0.22ppb (SD=0.27; range: 0–2.30ppb). Landfill odor increased 0.63 points (on 5-point Likert-type scale) for every 1ppb increase in hourly average H2S when the wind was blowing from the landfill towards the community (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.29, 0.91). Odor was strongly associated with reports of alteration of daily activities (odds ratio (OR)=9.0; 95% CI: 3.5, 23.5), negative mood states (OR=5.2; 95% CI: 2.8, 9.6), mucosal irritation (OR=3.7; 95% CI=2.0, 7.1) and upper respiratory symptoms (OR=3.9; 95% CI: 2.2, 7.0), but not positive mood states (OR=0.6; 95% CI: 0.2, 1.5) and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms (OR=1.0; 95% CI: 0.4, 2.6).\nConclusions\nResults suggest air pollutants from a regional landfill negatively impact the health and quality of life of neighbors.",

"abstractNote": "Odor pollution was identified as a top priority of the community of North Denver. Previous studies that investigated the impact of air pollution in North Denver focused on adverse health effects, rather than mental well-being. This study assessed the impact of odors from industrial sources on the subjective well-being (SWB) of North Denver residents, and of four similar communities in Colorado for comparison. An online survey was sent to participants from Greeley, Fort Collins, Fort Lupton, North Denver, and Pueblo, asking questions about SWB and odors in their areas (n = 351). The evaluation of SWB was performed using a novel approach that appraises three aspects of SWB. This approach of evaluating SWB has not been used in odor exposure studies. A proportional odds logistic regression model was used to estimate nine measures of SWB. The results showed that participants who reported that the air is very fresh or the odor is highly acceptable had higher levels of SWB. This association suggests that residents who live in areas exposed to strong industrial odors had lower levels of SWB. A subset of participants in this study took the survey four times in one year. Longitudinal analysis showed that evaluative satisfaction was slightly associated with seasonality. Both satisfaction with how life turned out and satisfaction with standards of living slightly increased during the fourth quarter of the year. The study also found that four of the nine measures can be used to represent SWB in future studies. Two of those measures were evaluative SWB, and the other two were positive hedonic SWB measures. A comparison between the five communities showed that well-being levels in North Denver and Greeley were not significantly different than those in Fort Collins or Fort Lupton. The comparison, however, showed that Pueblo had the lowest levels of well-being among all communities.",

"abstractNote": "In the context of environmental malodour, surveys are valuable as they allow for the relatively detailed analysis of multiple factors pertaining to odour perception and subsequent reaction. However, the causes for an individual to experience odour impact while a neighbour will not are still not understood. The goal of this current survey design was to consolidate varying research paths for surveys within the environmental odour research space. This survey investigated the area of effect for wastewater treatment plants by using stratified random sampling techniques that radiated from the industrial areas. Additionally, this survey provided a “non-alerted” response to environmental malodour that represents a step forward for ecological validity. We found a small number of items relating to odour annoyance and home ownership that can be used in order to predict odour impact for individual community members. However, we also did not find any relationship with odour impact and perceived control. This survey design and analysis reconciles the varied approaches towards community surveys administered in prior literature, as well as providing information to improve future community engagement policies.",

"abstractNote": "The environmental odor pollution emitted from different sources has undesirable impacts on communities' health and welfare in a way that caused increasing public worry and complains around the world. Pars Vegetable Oil Processing Plant (PVOPP) is located near populated residential areas in Tehran; hence, many people are exposed to the plant process annoying odor daily. In order to assess the odor annoying impacts on its nearby business centers a social survey has been applied. In the field area 200 questionnaires were intended to be filled out but 180 of them have been completed by the respondents (90%). Almost 98% of the respondents have perceived the odor from the outdoor source in their working places which is known as the industry by 78% of them. Among the respondents 42% of them have defined the odor as intolerable. Considering that industry has been recognized as the most important external parameter which affect the quality of working environments, the impact of this industrial unit on decreasing the quality level of working conditions is more obvious. The duration of presence in the working place and record of service are related to disorders in working activity and emotion and thus confirm the odor pollution impacts on the employees' efficiency.",

"abstractNote": "In patients attributing their health complaints to environmental factors (EnvPat) evidence based medical diagnostics usually do not confirm environmental and somatic causes of symptoms. Many symptoms remain unexplained. Aim of the study was the systematic assessment of medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) in EnvPat and comparison to symptom rates reported by subjects of an environmental study exposed to environmental odors (EnvExp). This specific exposure was chosen, as odors are associated by an unclear mechanism with physical symptoms. By this we aimed to enlighten the open question as to likeliness that MUPS of EnvPat are caused by hitherto unrevealed environmental exposures or result from somatization. MUPS were measured with SOMS-2 in EnvPat n=92, patients presenting in a university environmental outpatients clinic, and different study groups exposed to environmental odors (EnvExp). These were: (1) subjects exposed to annoying odors and medically relevant concentrations of bioaerosols, such as airborne microorganisms (EnvExp-1, n=74), and (2) subjects exposed to odors alone (EnvExp-2, n=282) as well as unexposed controls (Controls, n=235). Logistic regression and analysis of variance were applied to analyze rates of single complaints and the sum index of complaints (SOMS-CoIx). In EnvPat rates of MUPS were highest – significant (p<0.05) adjusted OR in 23 of 25 MUPS compared to controls – and highest SOMS-CoIx (mean 15.3 (S.D. ±9.3). Rates of MUPS were lower in environmentally exposed subjects with difference in the two strata: while EnvExp-1 differed in several complaints, i.e., nausea and SOMS-CoIx (mean 7.2, S.D. ±6.9) from controls (p<0.05), EnvExp-2 (SOMS-CoIx mean 4.8, S.D. ±5.2) showed relevant differences only in two single complaints and not in the SOMS-CoIx from controls, SOMS-CoIx mean 3.9, S.D. ±5.0. This remained when adjusting for age, gender, and school education. Rates of MUPS in environmental patients were clearly higher than in subjects with actual environmental exposure, making it unlikely that their symptoms are due to undetected environmental factors. MUPS of EnvPat show similarities to psychosomatic patients. In the environmental survey symptom assessment by SOMS-2 was sensitive to different environmental scenarios, i.e., higher rates of physical complaints were only found in subjects with hazardous residential bioaerosols pollution as well as an annoying odor exposure and interestingly not in subjects exposed to annoying odors alone. This underlines that questionnaire data of somatic complaints need to be interpreted on the basis of exposure assessment in order to unjustly attribute health complaints to annoyance.",

"abstractNote": "Perceived air pollution, including environmental odor pollution, is known to be an environmental stressor that affects individuals' psychosocial health and well-being. However, very few studies have been able to quantify exposure–response associations based on individual-specific residential exposures to a proxy gas and to examine the mechanisms underlying these associations. In this study, individual-specific exposures in non-urban residential environments during 2005–2010 on a gas released from animal biodegradable wastes (ammonia, NH3) were calculated by the Danish Eulerian long-range transport model and the local-scale transport deposition model. We used binomial and multinomial logistic regression and mediation analyses to examine the associations between average exposures and questionnaire-based data on psychosocial responses, after controlling for person-specific covariates. About 45% of the respondents were annoyed by residential odor pollution. Exposures were associated with annoyance (adjusted odds ratio [ORadj]=3.54, 95% confidence interval [CI]=2.33–5.39), health risk perception (ORadj=4.94; 95% CI=1.95–12.5) and behavioral interference (ORadj=3.28; 95% CI=1.77–6.11), for each unit increase in loge(NH3 exposure). Annoyance was a strong mediator in exposure–behavior interference and exposure–health risk perception relationships (81% and 44% mediation, respectively). Health risk perception did not play a mediating role in exposure–annoyance or exposure–behavioral interference relationships. This is the first study to provide a quantitative estimation of the dose–response associations between ambient NH3 exposures and psychosocial effects caused by odor pollution in non-urban residential outdoor environments. It further shows that these effects are both direct and mediated by other psychosocial responses. The results support the use of NH3 as a proxy gas of air pollution from animal biodegradable wastes in epidemiologic studies.",

"abstractNote": "This paper presents results from a study of the community health impacts of a petroleum refinery in Oakville, Ontario in Canada. The research is informed by the environmental stress and coping literatures and the focus is on community reappraisal of the refinery's impacts before and after the implementation of a substantive odour reduction initiative on the part of the refinery operators. Community health surveys were conducted in 1992 (n=391) and 1997 (n=427) to examine changes in odour perception and annoyance and self-reported health status attributable to the odour reduction plan. The findings reported here suggest an on-going process of cognitive reappraisal, whereby negative perceptions and concerns decreased between 1992 and 1997. Irrespective of this positive reappraisal of the refinery efforts, those living close to the refinery continue to report negative health impacts. A strong mediating effect of odours on the refinery exposure-symptom reporting relationship was confirmed by our results. While the relationship between odour perception and symptom reporting indicates the importance of odour perception and annoyance as the principal mechanism mediating ill-health reporting, the plausibility of other causal pathways is recognized. Residents’ sensitivity to the negative effects of the refinery on their health and the health of their children suggests a psychosocial reaction to the environmental stress associated with perceived and actual refinery emissions.",

[...]there is discussion about the potential human health risks specifically for residents of nearby communities, predominantly in two Dutch provinces with the highest density of livestock farms in the Netherlands: Noord-Brabant and Limburg. [...]the study also suggests that living near livestock farms have protective effects: asthma, allergies and COPD occur less frequently in persons in proximity to livestock farms. [...]research into some specific zoonotic pathogens and antibiotic resistance microorganisms showed no significant associations with living near livestock farms [5]. [...]to place the hazards and health effects into context and perspective: to judge whether it is a major problem for residents in the Netherlands by interviewing scientific experts. The sample of scientific experts was identified and selected according to the literature reviewed as well as suggestions given by the advisors of this study. Since the study was interested in the human health hazards of intensive livestock farming, care was taken to select scientific experts with different backgrounds, including public health (n = 5) and veterinary sciences (n = 5) and areas of expertise within other domains such as engineering, toxicology and molecular biology (n = 5).",

"abstractNote": "This study aimed at establishing the relationship between annoyance scores and modelled air pollution in “Chemical Valley”, Sarnia, Ontario (Canada). Annoyance scores were taken from a community health survey (N = 774); and respondents’ exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) were estimated using land use regression (LUR) models. The associations were examined by univariate analysis while multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the determinants of odour annoyance. The results showed that odour annoyance was significantly correlated to modelled pollutants at the individual (NO2, r = 0.15; SO2, r = 0.13) and census tract (NO2, r = 0.56; SO2, r = 0.67) levels. The exposure-response relationships show that residents of Sarnia react to very low pollution concentrations levels even if they are within the Ontario ambient air quality criteria. The study found that exposure to high NO2 and SO2 concentrations, gender, and perception of health effects were significant determinants of individual odour annoyance reporting. The observed association between odour annoyance and modelled ambient pollution suggest that individual and census tract level annoyance scores may serve as proxies for air quality in exposed communities because they capture the within area spatial variability of pollution. However, questionnaire-based odour annoyance scores need to be validated longitudinally and across different scales if they are to be adopted for use at the national level.",

"abstractNote": "In the planning and authorization process of industrial plants or agricultural buildings, it needs to be ensured that odor emissions do not annoy nearby residents in an unacceptable way. Previous studies have shown that odor-hour frequency is an important predictor for odor annoyance. However, odor-hour frequencies can be assessed for day and night separately. The present study relates complaint rates with different odor types and different metrics of frequency calculated via a dispersion model. Binary logistic regression analyses show that odor type and frequency of odor-hours are important predictors for complaints, while type of residential area does not increase the predictive value of the model. The combination of calculated frequency of day time odor-hours and type of odor explains complaint rates best. It is recommended to keep odor emissions as low as possible, especially for highly annoying odor types.",

"abstractNote": "Aerobic composting and anaerobic digestion with hydrolysis pretreatment are two mainstream methods used to recycle and reclaim sewage sludge. However, during these sludge treatment processes, many odors are emitted that may cause severe emotional disturbance and health risks to those exposed. This study identified odor pollution (i.e. sensory influence, odor contribution, and human risks) from samples collected during sludge aerobic composting throughout different seasons as well as during anaerobic digestion with hydrolysis pretreatment. Odor intensity, odor active values, and permissible concentration-time weighted averages for ammonia and five volatile sulfur compounds were assessed. The results revealed serious odor pollution from all sampling sites during aerobic composting, especially in winter. Excessively strong odors were identified in the composting workshop, with total odor active values between 997 and 8980 which accounted for 78.45%–96.18% of the total sludge aerobic composting plant. Levels of ammonia and dimethyl disulfide in the ambient air were high enough to harm employees’ health. During anaerobic digestion, excessively strong odors were identified in dehydration workshop 2, and the total odor active values of six odors reached 32,268, with ammonia and hydrogen sulfide levels significant enough to harm human health.",
