"note": "
This article, which appears in Huffington Post attempts to normalize the cadence of the female voice and behavior for that of a transsexual woman. At North Carolina College in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Nicole Hatch works with other transsexual women to rehabilitate their speech to mimic the patterns of female speech. This article is fraught with binary conceptions of gendered behavior, pointing out that \"[women] use more adjectives, and they gesture more with the hands and use their face more to express feelings.\" Classic generalizations about the difference between women and men in their ability to remember and calculate directions to a geographic place are also explored. Since this article concentrates on the transgender as patient and as student, and due to its timely writing, it's emphasis on rehabilitation of the male body to fit within the gender binary is particularly telling of a need to normalize the subject, which in this case, focuses on the voice.
",

One boy tells his mother he wants to dress up as Daphne from Scooby Doo for Halloween and the other mother has provided a space for her son to dress in girl's clothing in his daily life. As the heteronormative binary converges in this widely televised morning news item, there is an overwhelming preoccupation with how these children will be affected by other classmates, who, from what we gather, perceive feminine accoutrement (if we define these inanimate objects as \"feminine\") as proprietary to the female sexed body. Even with the question that appears at the bottom of the interview, \"Is it okay for little boys to wear dresses?\" we are implicated in the subjective debate of gender production.
",

            "note": "
The story of Gaylord Phoenix is critical reading/viewing as it creates discordant representations that constitute and understanding of queer/transgender identities. Sexuality, desire, love, loss, and transformation, are some of the elements that come to be visualized in this other worldly comic zine. A love and sexual affair develops between Gaylord Phoenix and another bodily boy-gendered being. Bodies in transition, as well as alternately constituted bodies are given in these representations, and raise ideas of the othering of transgender/queer, and the other that lies within toward closing the gap between love, intimacy, and the other. Butler talks of transformation as a process, and these zines, while they do not explicitly point to a defineable biological gender, visually manifest the desire for and beauty of transformation. Transformation in these zines follows along the lines of love, desire, body, and identity. Within this story we follow Gaylord Phoenix and his other in their explorations of their bodies and the transformation of their bodies and their identities.
",

            "note": "
Zine based on the word timtum, a Yiddish word for an androgynous person or an effeminate man. Concentrates on the struggle with being a transgender young man, issues of identity, and visibility among both queer and heterosexual groups. Discusses Claude Cahun as a gender freedom fighter, and features many black and white pictures and collages of Cahun. Cogent discussion of the use of pronouns and their gendering function in the queer community, how it forms transgender identity, and how intentional misuse of a pronoun erases identity, rendering transgender queers invisible. Highlights being a boy in Jewish American culture, and the struggle for identity when interfacing with normalizing power that attempts to gender you inappropriately. The author talks about trying on clothes and finding men’s clothes too big and women’s clothes to small or too much emphasizing of hips, etc. Implicates collaboration with skinny and fat community in their inability to find clothing for their body sizes. This sort of gender and body norming renders people invisible. Talks of surgery and “in-between-ness” after completing top surgery day before Rosh Hashanah. Includes three boxes of drawings, which are a close up of a male gendered pelvis and the person cutting their penis off to reveal a hole in the center of the pelvis. This correlates almost directly to representations featured in Gaylord Phoenix. Amazing!
",

            "note": "
Cissexual in this essay is used to indicate an individual who embodies and performs gender within the biological sex into which they have been born. Julia Serano seeks to unpack or dismantle the privilege and the power to withhold this privilege that comes into play in relation to the cissexual person. Singling out cissexual as a term in the field of understanding and examining transsexual identity places this normalized, and previously unnamed, identity under the microscope, a microscope which Serano indicates has previously been focused on transsexuals within the field of queer theory. This reading provides a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which people gender the other, and confer privilege based on a cissexual framework of categorizing the other into a male/female biological sex binary. Raising critical issues of third-gendering, passing-centrism, transphobia, and exoticizing the transsexual/transgender other, Serano calls for coming to terms with our own \"gender entitlement,\" which can clear the path toward gender equality. How can we not gender the other? How can we prevent ourselves from withholding privilege from the transsexual other? This is an important essay in understanding cissexual privilege within the field of gender, how this interconnects with Butler and Halberstam in their articulation of gender and sexuality.
",

            "note": "
Erin Calhoun Davis balances her exploration of transgender identity with the work of Judith Butler and her emphasis on the performativity of gender and its ability to produce and govern bodies. Davis also takes up the ideas of fluidity, outlined in Halberstam's essay on the FTM and butch continuum, but takes it a bit further by rooting biological sex in hegemonic expectations and problematizes the idea of transgender bodies being in a state of fluidity. This reading feeds really well into Serano's essay, \"Dismantling cissexual privilege,\" with its focus on how the transgender body can be seen and erased in spheres of the social and public. It also intersects with Judith Halberstam's piece, \"Transgender butch: Butch/FTM border wars and the masculine continuum,\" with its discussion of fluidity in the field of queer studies. Davis also brings around, in the same way many other theorists have, the idea of gender diversity, the emphasis shifting from difference impressed by the gender binary, and seeking to transform its outlook through understanding the variety of gender expression that exists now and will continue to develop in the future.
",

            "abstractNote": "Drawing on Butler's theory of gender performativity, which conceptualizes the discursive production of the gendered subject and the corresponding \"constitutive instabilities\" of such reiterative practices, I provide an empirical sociological examination of how individuals negotiate potentially unintelligible identities in their daily lives and the extent to which these practices call into question the conceptual dichotomization of stability and fluidity. While transsexed bodies, histories, and identities may \"exceed\" the limits of intelligibility, trans individuals are engaged in the process of meaning making--creating coherence both for themselves and for others. The present theorizing of (trans)gender identification has not fully explored the interaction among social expectations, individuals' attempts to be credible, and the structural limitations on intelligible gender identifications. In addition, despite theoretical arguments resting on the compulsory, regulatory nature of gender regimes, gender fluidity is often situated as counter to such regulation. By exploring the negotiated identifications of transsexed respondents across different interactional spaces and the structural rules and norms which frame such presentation choices, this article theorizes the contextual regulation of (trans)gender diversity and the corresponding production of situated identification. Further, in examining this negotiation, the concept of fluidity is interrogated in order to complicate the analytic dualism of fluidity/stability and the corresponding dichotomous positioning of transsexed individuals as either blurring or reifying the boundaries of the gender binary.",

            "note": "
Judith Halberstam discusses the queer lesbian butch and the female to male (FTM) transsexual within the field of queer studies. Focusing on these queer subjects, she highlights the tensions present along the border of these two identities: one situated around identity and the other around gender, but both in a struggle with lesbian feminism by virtue of transgender masculinities. This essay easily ties into the readings completed for Debating Gender and Sexuality (part 1), as it calls for gender diversity or queer hybridity. Halberstam focuses her attention on the border, and situates FTM transsexuals as \"border crossers,\" but still observes this population as residing on the masculine continuum, which she also discusses in this essay. Androgyny resides at one end of the spectrum and FTM transsexual is located at the other end. Some of the points Halberstam is making coincide with what hooks was underlining in her work, \"Feminism: A movement to end sexist oppression,\" which calls for a look at the variety of oppressions that come up in holding on to one narrow sliver of identity. Identifying as a feminist, should encompass a desire to not only end oppression of women, but that of class, race, etc. This essay is a critical piece to extend the conversation around identity as it intersects with gender and sexuality.
",
