            "abstractNote": "We used a combination of behavioral, computational vision and fMRI methods to examine human brain activity while viewing a 386 s video of a solo Bharatanatyam dance. A computational analysis provided us with a Motion Index (MI) quantifying the silhouette motion of the dancer throughout the dance. A behavioral analysis using 30 naïve observers provided us with the time points where observers were most likely to report event boundaries where one movement segment ended and another began. These behavioral and computational data were used to interpret the brain activity of a different set of 11 naïve observers who viewed the dance video while brain activity was measured using fMRI. Results showed that the Motion Index related to brain activity in a single cluster in the right Inferior Temporal Gyrus (ITG) in the vicinity of the Extrastriate Body Area (EBA). Perception of event boundaries in the video was related to the BA44 region of right Inferior Frontal Gyrus as well as extensive clusters of bilateral activity in the Inferior Occipital Gyrus which extended in the right hemisphere towards the posterior Superior Temporal Sulcus (pSTS).",

            "abstractNote": "Inspired by expressive gestures of conductors, research in designing interactive conducting systems has explored numerous interaction techniques. The consequence of such research has substantially impacted the design of more natural, expressive, and intuitive interfaces for communicating with computers. With the growth of whole-body interaction systems using motion-capture sensors, we retraced the history of interactive conducting systems to interpret and exploit the full potential of expressivity in the movement. We focused on 55 papers, published from 1970 to 2015, that directed this history. We examined each system using four categories: interface(hardware), gestures(features), computational methods, and output parameters. We then conducted a thematic analysis, discussing how insights have inspired researchers to design a better user experience, improving naturalness, expressiveness and intuitiveness in interfaces over four decades.",

            "abstractNote": "Advanced low-cost highly accurate sensing technology has\ntransformedgesturalinterfacesmakingtherecognitionofqual-\nitative and expressive content in musical gestures more vital\nthan ever before. Seeking insight into designing rich inter-\nactions that support creative, flexible, high bandwidth con-\ntrol and communication, we chose ensemble conducting as a\npotentially deeply informative paradigm. We performed an\nexploratory analysis of qualitative aspects of conducting ges-\ntures that reveals an important role for the intra-beat vari-\nance of time derivatives of the position of the right hand and\nwrist. In our simplified conducting trials, these correlate well\nwith expressive qualities of the beat at a fundamental level.\nWe analyzed the sostenuto and staccato articulation styles\nof a focused conducting experiment. The articulation styles\nwere conducted in 4/4 beat pattern at two tempos, one beat\nper second (60 BPM) and two beats per second (120 BPM).\nFrom these beat patterns, we extracted primitive movement\nfeatures, which were analyzed using Naive Bayes classifica-\ntion. Our results demonstrate that our approach effectively\ncaptures unique characteristics of each articulation style tied\nto subtle changes within each beat.",

            "abstractNote": "Advances in sensing technology make the task of quantify-\ning expressive human body movement more feasible than\never before. Success will enable breakthroughs in Human-\ncomputer interaction (HCI) and control paradigms. In most\nareas, however, expressivity remains vague and difficult to\ndefine. We examine the movements of instrumental conduc-\ntors at an elementary level to define particular qualities of a\nbeat. In our test case, we focus on the difference between\nsostenuto and staccato articulation styles as a base for expres-\nsive qualities. We show that it is possible to define generic\nlow-level movement features, we call movement primitives,\nto quantify the qualitative aspects of these two different artic-\nulation styles across a range of different tempi. Our move-\nment primitives include the mean and variance of the mag-\nnitude of velocity and acceleration, and measures of spatial\ncurvature. Each of these is measured from the ictus of one\nbeat through the ictus of the next beat in a standard 4/4 beat\npattern. The discriminative power of these features is demon-\nstrated by two-tail t-tests and verified through Na¨ ıve Bayes\nclassification experiments. The results demonstrate that our\nuse of movement primitives effectively describes characteris-\ntics of expression revealed in each beat of two different artic-\nulation styles",

            "abstractNote": "A conductor provides a single unified vision of how to interpret and perform music. However, perceiving a conductor's musical intention and expression is quite challenging as they convey information to performers with subtle, nuanced, and highly individualized gestures. This artwork visualizes the conductor's gestures in order to give the audience a better understanding of its expressivity. To represent the expressivity of the gestures, we created motion profiles over eight frames, at 30 frames per second, and compared them to previously modeled gestures using three motion factors, called Weight, Space and Time from related concepts in Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). Based on this, we have created a real-time, interactive visualization that is driven by the motion factor parameters. The visualization receives the input video stream, and it is transformed into a representation of the three motion factors extracted from the real-time conducting gestures.",

Interactive visualizations have the potential to shift the perception of machine learning models from black-box processes to transparent artifacts that can be experienced and crafted. We discuss how they can reveal the affordances of different techniques, and how they could lead to a deeper understanding of the underlying algorithms. We describe a proof-of-concept application to visualize and manipulate Hidden Markov Models, that provides a ground for a broader discussion on the potentials and challenges of interactive visualizations in human-centered machine learning.",

            "abstractNote": "Insights gained from an interdisciplinary study of the creative processes involved in dance composition are the basis for developing computer-based tools to support dance composition and animation. The system that has been developed, Life Forms, provides an interactive hierarchical environment where the user can reduce the complexity of the task by flexibly switching between spatial and temporal views of the composition. Realistic animation of the final result is also available. Life Forms, which is implemented on IRIS and Macintosh workstations, has proven itself to be of real value in dance composition. It is now being tested as the front end of a conventional animation system for use in animating multiple articulated figures.",

            "abstractNote": "As libraries increasingly undertake digitization projects, it behooves us to consider the collection/capture, organization, preservation, and dissemination of all forms of documentation, including and beyond written text. While several libraries have funded projects which acknowledge the need to digitize other forms of text, few have extended the digital projects to include film, much less performed texts. Further, as more performing arts incorporate born-digital elements, use digital tools to create media-rich performance experiences, and look to the possibility for digital preservation of the performance text, the capture of the performance event and its born-digital artefacts must be considered. This article, then, presents a first look at the ARTeFACT project, undertaken at the University of Virginia Library in collaboration with an introductory course in Engineering and a student choreographer at Brenau University Women's College. Historical intersections of technology and dance are introduced, theoretical concerns of using technology in dance are considered, the processes involved in the creation, capture, and preservation of dance data are discussed along with the technologies used to produce an interactive dance performance.",

            "abstractNote": "The communication of emotion and the creation of affect are core to creating immersive and engaging experiences, such as those in performance, games and simulation. They often rely on atmospheric cues that influence how an environment feels. The design of such ambient visual cues for affect is an elusive topic that has been studied by painters, theatre directors, scenic designers, lighting designers, filmmakers, producers, and artists for years. Research shows that simple motions have the capacity to be both perceptually efficient and powerfully evocative, and motion textures – patterns of ambient motion throughout the scene – are frequently used to imbue the atmosphere with affect. These effects rely on designer craft: there is to date little empirical evidence of how motion properties contribute to affective impressions. In this paper we report research into affective motion textures that shows how even simple variations in path curvature, speed and texture layout can influence affective impressions. We describe the development of a motion brushing prototype tool and discuss insights from an on-going qualitative study with professional visual effects designers into how such capabilities can enhance their current practice.",

            "abstractNote": "Plausible spatial behavior is a key capability that autonomous virtual characters need in order to provide ecologically valid social interactions. However, there is a lack of psychological data on spatial behavior in the larger scale social settings and over extended periods of time. In this paper, we present a social navigation model that aims at generating human-like spatial behavior for a virtual human in a social setting with group dynamics. We employ an engineering approach by defining a dynamic representation of interest and then using it as the psychometric function that regulates the behavior of the agent. We evaluate our model by means of two test cases that address different aspect of the model and serve as a proof of concept. Our work is a step toward models for generating more plausible social spatial behavior for virtual characters that is based on both internal dynamics and attributes of the social environment.             "abstractNote": "Mindfulness meditation is widely recognized for its psychological and physical well-being benefits. However, entering and maintaining a mindful state and increasing one’s self awareness is often challenging, especially for novice meditators. \nWe are designing a system to help novice meditators with these challenges by providing real-time neuro- and biofeedback generated from EEG and respiration data. This design builds upon \"Sonic Cradle\" (Vidyarthi & Riecke, First International Conference on Mindfulness 2013, International Journal Of Human-Computer Studies 2014), an exploratory HCI paradigm designed to foster meditative attentional patterns as a user progressively shapes a soundscape with their breath.\nWhile this original design proved effective in helping users reach a state comparable to mindfulness meditation, participants reported that the soundscape could also occasionally distract them away from their breath. To address this, we integrate EEG data to detect when users have achieved a state of focused attention, and gradually reduce soundscape saliency. Conversely, when EEG data reveals a state of distraction, the soundscape becomes more salient, increasing its ability to cue users back to their breath with curiosity as proved to be effective in Vidyarthi & Riecke (2013). This playful interaction invites users to focus on their breathing with curiosity and non-judgment when they are exhibiting a state of distraction. Once they achieve focused attention, the interaction paradigm fades out, allowing users to meditate undisturbed.  \nWe guide design decisions through extensive literature review and iterative evaluation with experienced and novice meditators, including a mixed-methods study to test our design hypothesis and guide future development.",

            "abstractNote": "We introduce SoundGuides, a user adaptable tool for auditory feedback on movement. The system is based on a interactive machine learning approach, where both gestures and sounds are first conjointly designed and conjointly learned by the system. The system can then automatically adapt the auditory feedback to any new user, taking into account the particular way each user performs a given gesture. SoundGuides is suitable for the design of continuous auditory feedback aimed at guiding users' movements and helping them to perform a specific movement consistently over time. Applications span from movement-based interaction techniques to auditory-guided rehabilitation.
