palmar and plantar sites (Sect. 1.3.3.3) is given by Edelberg (1972a): because sweat
is not simply a solution of electrolytes but additionally contains organic substances
(Sect. 1.3.3.1), sweating at those sites could serve as a tracking aid in certain
species. It is possible that the olfactory action of organic agents in sweat would

In this experiment, we compare reports of affective experience obtained using SAM, which requires only three simple judgments, to the Semantic Differential scale devised by Mehrabian and Russell (An approach to environmental psychology, 1974) which requires 18 different ratings. Subjective reports were measured to a series of pictures that varied in both affective valence and intensity. Correlations across the two rating methods were high both for reports of experienced pleasure and felt arousal. Differences obtained in the dominance dimension of the two instruments suggest that SAM may better track the personal response to an affective stimulus. Kim and André present a study in which they indentify emotional cues from various physiological measures from a musical induction procedure. This was obtained from 3 subjects, which over a period of three months, listened to music selected by them to elicit four specific emotions (from the 4 quadrants of the 2D model). The authors give a very complete introduction and related research section, establishing a framework and steps for developing emotion recognition systems (modeling, analyzing, processing, training and classification). The paper also describes in much detail the methodology, from the acquisition of the four physiological channels (ECG, RSP, GSR and EMG), the extraction of 110 features from these signals, and the development of a novel scheme of emotion-specific multilevel dichotomous classification (EMDC). The authors obtained a recognition accuracy of 95% for subject dependant classification with this method.

This paper investigates the potential of physiological signals as reliable channels for emotion recognition. All essential stages of an automatic recognition system are discussed, from the recording of a physiological data set to a feature-based multiclass classification. In order to collect a physiological data set from multiple subjects over many weeks, we used a musical induction method that spontaneously leads subjects to real emotional states, without any deliberate laboratory setting. Four-channel biosensors were used to measure electromyogram, electrocardiogram, skin conductivity, and respiration changes. A wide range of physiological features from various analysis domains, including time/frequency, entropy, geometric analysis, subband spectra, multiscale entropy, etc., is proposed in order to find the best emotion-relevant features and to correlate them with emotional states. The best features extracted are specified in detail and their effectiveness is proven by classification results. Classification of four musical emotions (positive/high arousal, negative/high arousal, negative/low arousal, and positive/low arousal) is performed by using an extended linear discriminant analysis (pLDA). Furthermore, by exploiting a dichotomic property of the 2D emotion model, we develop a novel scheme of emotion-specific multilevel dichotomous classification (EMDC) and compare its performance with direct multiclass classification using the pLDA. Picard, from the MIT media Lab, gives well-grounded arguments for the use of an emotion channel in HCI. The author takes an engineering approach to the human body, portraying it with a signal representation (page 159), with properties such as Response Decay, Nonlinearity, Time-invariance, and Saturation, among others. The author also presents the results of studies of emotion recognition using biosignals (chapter 2, section 6), highlighting a study with only one actress expressing eight emotions each day, during 22 days. Even though results show that certain emotional states can be recognized from EMG, BVP, GSR and RSP, the use of an actress to ‘express’ emotions questions the validity of the methodology and it’s further generalization.

The table shows that “the predictions of the fight-flight and conservation-withdrawal responses are neither consistently confirmed not disconfirmed”. They suggest that this may be due to inconsistencies among the induction paradigms. In the paper they present the results of experiments with sadness and fear induced in 6 films (two frightening, two sad, and two neutral). They measured 23 physiological features extracted from RSP, GSR and ECG (including features that are not frequent in the literature). Results show that physiological response differentiated from neutral in both sad and fear, and they also found different patterns between these (only in RSP and HR).
