"abstractNote": "For the third edition of _Cross-Talk in Comp Theory_, Victor Villanueva recruited the expertise of colleague Kristin L. Arola in order to flesh out the discussion on composition and technology. The quick movement of the paradigm--from the personal computer to local-area networks to the rise of social networking--suggests the need to recall the talk and the cross-talk concerning computers and their products for composition. The award-winning Villanueva and his coeditor Arola have dropped nine essays from the second edition, reoriented others into new sections, and added eight new essays, including six in the new technology section, \"Virtual Talk: Composing Beyond the Word.\" Amid these changes, the third edition maintains the historical perspective of previous editions while continuing to provide insights on the relatively new discipline of composition studies. Landmark contributions by major figures such as Donald Murray, Janet Emig, Walter Ong, Sondra Perl, Mike Rose, and Patricia Bizzell remain. They are joined by the works of other trailblazing scholars such as Peter Elbow and Richard Ohmann. This edition also incorporates texts by key names within comp's conversations on technology, including Adam Banks, Cynthia Selfe, and Kathleen Blake Yancey. The result is a collection that continues to provide new and experienced teachers and scholars with indispensable insights into the challenges, controversies, and ever-shifting currents within our rich and ever-evolving field.",

"abstractNote": "The author argues that the institutional label of ‘ESOL student’ (i.e., English for\nSpeakers of Other Languages), affects students’ identity construction, especially when students transition from one educational setting to another. The author illustrates her argument with results of ethnographic case studies of three immigrant students who\ntransitioned from a U.S. high school to a community college ESOL program. As\nESOL students in high school, the students were successful writers. At college, on the other hand, the students struggled with the label given by the institution. As a consequence, these long-term U.S. residents did not do well in writing classes where a majority of students were just-arrived immigrants. The ESOL student label affects the\nstudents’ behavior and motivation in the classrooms.",

"abstractNote": "While sustainability--meeting today's needs without jeopardizing the interests of future generations--has become a dominating force in a range of disciplines, it has yet to play a substantive role in English studies. Derek Owens argues that, in light of worsening environmental crises and accelerating social injustices, we need to use sustainability as a way to structure courses and curricula, and that composition studies, with its inherent cross-disciplinarity and its unique function in students' academic lives, can play a key role in giving sustainability a central place in students' thinking and in the curriculum as a whole.Owens draws on student writing to articulate a pedagogy that gives students opportunities to think and write in three zones of inquiry: place, work, and future. This approach allows for the creation of a variegated course wherein students write neighborhood portraits, critique their work experiences, reflect on their majors, investigate alternative theories of education, compose oral histories, construct narratives about their futures, and design their own assignments--all from the perspective of sustainability. These writings are juxtaposed with observations from writers in architecture, ecological economics, future studies, planning, sociology, sustainable business, and urban studies. The appendixes include a wealth of environmental statistics, as well as a detailed description of Owens's composition course, with assignments ready to use or adapt.",

"abstractNote": "Growing numbers of Americans with diagnoses of high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASD) are enrolling at universities across the country. This is great news for the diversity of highereducation. Nonetheless, students with ASD frequently encounter challenges when they sign up fortheir required composition courses. Group work, empathizing with audiences, using metaphorsin writing, these are just a few of the standard curricular situations that have alerted students, instructors, and administrators to the need for better strategies for accommodating the uniqueperspectives of ASD in composition instruction. This volume represents a start toward findingthose strategies. The contributors bring decades of classroom experience to bear on questions suchas How do we design assignments that encourage students with ASD to play to their strengthsas they work to improve their writing? How can administrators support students with ASD inwriting classes? and How should composition instructors interpret reports of research on ASDand writing? The overarching theme of the essays presented here is that ASD extends an invitationto college composition instructors to craft a learning environment that better serves all students.WITH ESSAYS CONTRIBUTED BY. "abstractNote": "Kelly Ritter and Paul Kei Matsuda have created an essential introduction to the field of composition studies for graduate students and instructors new to the study of writing. The book offers a careful exploration of this diverse field, focusing specifically on scholarship of writing and composing. Within this territory, the authors draw the boundaries broadly, to include allied sites of research such as professional and technical writing, writing across the curriculum programs, writing centers, and writing program administration. Importantly, they represent composition as a dynamic, eclectic field, influenced by factors both within the academy and without. The editors and their sixteen seasoned contributors have created a comprehensive and thoughtful exploration of composition studies as it stands in the early twenty-first century. Given the rapid growth of this field and the evolution of it research and pedagogical agendas over even the last ten years, this multi-vocal introduction is long overdue.",

So, for example, in the teaching of language, instead of learning lists of \"disembodied\" practical phrases (i.e. how to order in a cafe), learning would come from the experience of negotiating a real-life experience (i.e. going to a cafe, negotiating around the language that you need but don't have, reflecting on what went well and what was unsuccessful, returning to a classroom or to a more expert student to get what you need, and then going back and trying again). The concrete experience of needing a particular phrase leads to an opportunity for reflective observation, which then leads back to the opportunity for abstract conceptualization, which feeds back in to active experimentation. In the field of ESL, Kolb's theories are used in methods such as task-based learning and in Scott Thorbury's concept of dogme.",
