            "abstractNote": "This article deals with the production of water science and its practical use in water management in France between 1960 and 2000, first at national scale, and then focusing on the Rhône and the Seine river basins. It uses the hydrosocial cycle concept to account for the way in which the course of water and that of human affairs were intertwined. It provides examples of co-production of water science and social order in specific places where scientists contributed to redefining what water was and how it should be managed – a practice which had longstanding effects on those waterscapes. It shows how categorisation played an important role in this process. Moreover, it argues that waterscapes also shaped science, and not just exclusively the other way round, because waterscapes offered research opportunities that differed according to disciplines.",

            "abstractNote": "Social and scientific factors are deeply enmeshed in each other within the development and the use of ecological indicators (EI). Yet low research has assessed which factors contribute to selecting ecological indicators on the long-term. This article proposes to study the historical construction of EI by examining ecological, political, and social background of specific places where EI were developed, in France on lakes and rivers. Our major findings in France were that ecological indicators were never optimised for the present market or political arena. Instead EI development was typically recycling previous tools that were elaborated for other purposes by environmentally committed outsiders, without regular funding. We found that regular funding for monitoring an EI was only provided when it matched an institution's goal. Beyond the geographically limited relevance of the case studies, these results therefore improve the theoretical framework we deploy when constructing or relying on indicators.",

            "abstractNote": "De nombreux travaux portant sur la genèse de la loi sur l’eau de 1964 ont montré l’importance des débats au sein des commissions du Commissariat général du Plan et du Sénat. Ces travaux considèrent qu’en 1959 la pollution était devenue insupportable et ingérable et ils saluent la lettre de mission envoyée par Michel Debré à Jean Macé, Commissaire général du Plan en 1959, comme étant le facteur déclenchant ayant permis d’aborder la question. Cet article propose de revenir sur la fenêtre d’opportunité dont a bénéficié le problème de l’eau en proposant une hypothèse nouvelle. Alors que la qualité des eaux était mauvaise depuis de longues années, une ordonnance de 1959 a soudain fait de la pollution un délit. Le financement de la dépollution est donc devenu un problème urgent. L’article analyse la situation et la stratégie politique des organisations gestionnaires de la pêche en eau douce vis-à-vis de cette ordonnance et de la loi de 1964. Cette nouvelle lecture permet alors de mieux comprendre l’enjeu des débats sur les objectifs de qualité des rivières. Elle oppose une gestion piscicole à une gestion multi-usage des rivières et montre comment cette opposition a laissé une grande place à la négociation des normes de qualité au niveau local. Ce débat ancien permet de mieux comprendre les difficultés de mise en œuvre de la directive cadre européenne adoptée en 2000.",

En s'attachant à décrire l'histoire et le contexte institutionnel des services, cet ouvrage donne les clefs pour comprendre ce qui se joue dans la gestion locale de l'eau : prix de l'eau, rôle des collectivités, durabilité des services, partenariat public-privé... It focuses on the creativity of the movement, which ranges from semantic innovations (such as “peasant seeds”) to the reinvention of onfarm breeding practices based on new scientific paradigms, and includes new alliances with the social movements defending the commons. The trajectory of the movement is shaped by its encounters—with scientists, other international seed contestations, and other social movements—and by the productive frictions they create. This in-depth reframing of the activities connected to seeds contributes to building a counternarrative about farmers and seeds that reopens spaces for contestation. In this counternarrative, “peasant seeds” play a central and subversive role in the sense that they question the ontological assumptions of present seed laws.",

            "abstractNote": "Dynamic extinction colonisation models (also called contact processes) are widely studied in epidemiology and in metapopulation theory. Contacts are usually assumed to be possible only through a network of connected patches. This network accounts for a spatial landscape or a social organization of interactions. Thanks to social network literature, heterogeneous networks of contacts can be considered. A major issue is to assess the influence of the network in the dynamic model. Most work with this common purpose uses deterministic models or an approximation of a stochastic Extinction-Colonisation model (sEC) which are relevant only for large networks. When working with a limited size network, the induced stochasticity is essential and has to be taken into account in the conclusions. Here, a rigorous framework is proposed for limited size networks and the limitations of the deterministic approximation are exhibited. This framework allows exact computations when the number of patches is small. Otherwise, simulations are used and enhanced by adapted simulation techniques when necessary. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to compare four main topologies of networks in contrasting settings to determine the role of the network. A challenging case was studied in this context: seed exchange of crop species in the Réseau Semences Paysannes (RSP), an emergent French farmers׳ organisation. A stochastic Extinction-Colonisation model was used to characterize the consequences of substantial changes in terms of RSP׳s social organization on the ability of the system to maintain crop varieties.",

            "abstractNote": "In the wake of the anti-GMO struggles of the nineties and the toughening of seed laws, the 2000s saw the emergence of a farmers’ movement dedicated to the reappropriation of seeds. Spanning over a 10 year period, the paper looks at the movement’s drivers and its transformations. The reappropriation by a group of farmers of seeds takes root in a critical discourse towards agricultural modernity, which translates into 3 dimensions – the rejection of modern plant breeding techniques, opposition to the subaltern position of farmers, denunciation of the instrumental relationship between industrial farming and nature. Yet the movement has also enriched itself and been fashioned by a direct engagement with plants. This case study contributes to a better understanding of the ongoing ecologisation of agriculture. Moreover it provides a comprehensive illustration of a protest movement that is altered by the very object that it contributes to shape.",

            "abstractNote": "Cet article se penche sur une dynamique portée par des producteurs en France, qui cherchent à réhabiliter la sélection à la ferme à partir de variétés anciennes. Notre travail vise à analyser les éléments qui soudent la communauté de pratiques constituée autour des dénommées « semences paysannes ». Dans un premier temps, nous rendons compte des ressorts matériels et idéels qui poussent des producteurs de blé à se lancer dans la recherche de variétés anciennes et dans le réapprentissage de techniques de sélection. Pour ces agriculteurs alternatifs cultivant le plus souvent sous le label Agriculture Biologique, les variétés anciennes offrent d’abord des possibilités techniques (une meilleure adaptation à leurs conditions de production). Elles représentent aussi un levier politique (reconquérir une autonomie par rapport à l’industrie semencière) et un positionnement ontologique (construire une relation de compagnonnage avec les plantes). À partir de la création du Réseau Semences Paysannes en 2003, qui met en relation ces personnes jusqu’alors isolées, les semences deviennent aussi les vecteurs d’un réseau de sociabilités privilégiées. De l’étude du réseau de circulation des semences ressort un fort rejet de la centralisation de l’activité de sélection : « la semence, ça regarde tout le monde ». Dans le même temps, l’économie morale des échanges de semences révèle que tout le monde ne peut pas rentrer dans ce collectif : les nouveaux entrants sont sélectionnés sur leur capacité à se mettre à l’écoute de ces variétés, dans un renversement des épreuves où l’humain est testé par la plante, et non pas l’inverse.  En tant qu’objet qui circule et évolue de ferme en ferme, les semences constituent un objet intermédiaire, qui à la fois coordonne l’action collective et incarne les résultats de cette action. Parce qu’elles portent l’empreinte de ceux qui les ont travaillées, ces semences contribuent à resserrer le réseau, en l’inscrivant dans un tissu sans couture mêlant intimement les histoires des hommes et des blés. La pratique commune de la sélection à la ferme, matérialisée par la circulation physique des semences paysannes, constitue un acte performatif par lequel ces producteurs éprouvent le sentiment d’appartenir à un monde « paysan » construit en rupture avec la figure moderne de l’exploitant agricole.",
