The analysis does not presuppose any special motives for religious activity. Rather, religion is modeled as a club good that displays positive returns to \"participatory crowding.\" The analysis demonstrates that efficient religions with perfectly rational members may benefit from stigma, self-sacrifice, and bizarre behavioral restrictions. The model also addresses sacrifice in nonreligious \"social clubs\": fraternities, communes, political parties, work groups, and families.",

However, unlike their American counterparts, economic and practical considerations (including the opposition of their respective communities and society in general) play a correspondingly minor role. In both groups, internal conflicts, too much individualism, a general lack of organization and poor planning, overidealism and diversity of some of their members are among the major factors culminating in a comparative high drop-out rate and the occasional dissolution of the commune(s) in question.",

Multiple regressions employed variables that were suggested by studies of rural and urban communes and utopian communities. Success was measured by duration of commune and satisfaction of members. Elements of conventionality (economic prudence, voluntary time limitation, regular housework, perception of sufficient private time) enhanced satisfaction. Duration was increased by factors of conventionality (economic prudence, prior acquaintance, parental responsibilities, perception of sufficient private time) as well as one unconventional attribute (a norm of high communal involvement). Other unconventional practices (property sharing and nonmonogamy) had no direct effects on success.",

"abstractNote": "Kanter's (1968, 1972) theory of commitment posits that the mutual identification of individuals and a group emerges from resolving three problems of commitment: continuance of members' participation, their social cohesion, and social control over their relevant conduct. For 30 19th-century communal groups, Kanter found that groups employing commitment mechanisms were especially likely to be successful. A Weberian theory of social organization suggests that a group's basic cultural pattern of social organization shapes its capacity to use mechanisms to promote commitment. By locating Kanter's sample in a phenomenological Weberian typology of utopian communal groups, I found two distinct pathways of commitment associated with the \"community\" and the \"other-worldly sect\" as alternative types of communal religious social movements. Rational choice theory explicates how commitment problems are resolved (1) in the community through a pathway of social cohesion stemming from ethnicity; and (2) in the other-worldly sect by social control stemming from a spiritual hierarchy and confession.",

Research on 35 urban communal households found an initial shift in the locus of social control when intimate relationships are conducted in the presence of \"others.\" Couples experience pressures toward individuation, autonomy, and egalitarianism, and a loss of sovereignty. Parents experience diminishing rule-making and enforcing abilities and increased self-consciousness along with child care help. Children aged five to eleven are the recipients of increased rule making by a large circle of adults.",

"abstractNote": "Group cohesion is generally thought to contribute to social order. One explanation for this correlation suggests that it can be attributed to higher rates of sanctioning found in solidary communities. In the present paper I suggest a mechanism that may be at least partially responsible for the relationship between group cohesion and sanctioning. I argue that ties among potential sanctioners and other nondeviant group members are key. The strength of these relationships affects the level of support that group members give to those who punish antisocial behavior, and in turn, influences the likelihood that such sanctioning will occur. Thus group cohesion affects punishment indirectly by increasing the rewards that are given to sanctioners. This increase in rewards then affects sanctioning decisions. I test these predictions using experimental methods. The results support the hypotheses.",

"abstractNote": "The development and effects of group cohesion have been a long-standing concern in the small-group literature. Through an ethnographic examination of a leisure activity involving risk-mushroom collecting-we analyze how voluntary leisure groups maintain members' allegiance and affiliation, and thus create cohesion. Trust (communal concern) and secrecy (individual self-interest), based originally on information and subsequently on relationships, are critical to group stability. Groups provide arenas in which new members can place their trus in \"experts,\" thus receiving protective information and developing rewarding relationships to keep them from danger. Yet the openness of information has limits. Competitive relationships, which also tie members to the group, depend on privately held knowledge. As a result, even in cohesive groups committed to mutual support, information is a valued resource. Each member is expected to develop secrets and to shelter them from others in most circumstances. Trust and secrecy are compatible in those voluntary organizations in which all members can gain access to private knowledge while placing their trust in colleagues to share protective information.",

As the Soviet experience elicited anti-utopias, utopianism has been unable to resolve its own contradictions in an imperfect world. This tragic outcome is an opportunity for sociology in its study of human interactions to analyze both the possibilities and the inherent limitations of proposed social systems. By monitoring the rich variety of social experience, it may help to restrain some of the fanaticisms that now surround us.",

It asserts that the lessons of utopian societies are particularly timely given the monolithic appearance of contemporary social life. If taught with an experiential component, the study of utopian societies can be an effective vehicle for promoting the sociological imagination. With this in mind, the article reviews the experiential methods of the course (as well as the academic case study component) such as participant observations of dorm life, light and lively exercises, leadership simulations, utopian community designs, a weekend retreat, and a final group celebration.",

"abstractNote": "This paper defines commitment and proposes three types, continuance, cohesion, and control commitment, which bind personality systems to areas of social systems, linking cognitive, cathectic, and evaluative orientations to roles, relationships, and norms, respectively. Two processes underlie the development of each of the three types of commitment: sacrifice and investment support continuance; renunciation and communion support cohesion; and mortification and surrender support control. On the basis of these processes, a large number of commitment mechanisms, or commitment-producing organizational strategies, are set forth. Use of these strategies generally distinguishes successful (enduring) and unsuccessful (short-lived) nineteenth century American utopian communities.",

"abstractNote": "Using network data from 40 groups, we examine the effect of social context on the gendering of power relations. By modeling reported data on power relations as the result of a stochastic response process that may be gendered, we examine how this gendering is related to group-level contextual factors. We find that much of what appears to be a gendering of the way in which power relations are perceived, namely that women tend to stress equality in relationships more strongly than men, is actually due to their structural position, although women increase their propensity to stress equality when the balance of power between the genders is structurally anom- alous.",
