            "abstractNote": "This study examined the knowledge base of 142 elementary-level educators for implementing response-to-intervention (RTI) models in reading. A questionnaire assessed participants’ professional background for teaching reading, as well as their familiarity with specific assessments, research-based instructional models, and interventions potentially useful in RTI approaches. A multiple-choice knowledge survey patterned after a teacher licensure exam, including items situated in classroom contexts, assessed participants’ knowledge about different components of reading, assessment, and RTI practices. Overall, participants obtained the highest scores on a knowledge survey subscale involving fluency/vocabulary/comprehension and the lowest on a subscale involving assessment/RTI practices, with a subscale involving phonemic awareness/phonics in the middle. Mean percentages correct on the subscales ranged from about 58–65% correct. However, participants who said they had prior code-focused professional development outperformed other participants on all survey subscales. General elementary certified teachers performed comparably to special education certified teachers on two out of three subscales, with both groups outperforming unlicensed participants; on the assessment/RTI subscale, only the special educators outperformed unlicensed participants. Most participants were familiar with basic features of RTI such as the three tiered model but were unfamiliar with the research-based instructional approaches and interventions named in the study questionnaire, although participants who had experienced code-focused PD were significantly more likely to be familiar with certain interventions. The study suggests that professional development will be important to enable many educators to implement RTI effectively in reading.",

As a result, such readers are likely to need explicit instruction in the structure of the English language, also referred to as basic language concepts (i.e., concepts and skills related to phonology, phonics, morphology). However, researchers have found that preservice and in-service teachers generally lack knowledge about and skills related to these concepts. Thus, the purpose of this article is to provide recommendations for teacher educators in both general and special education preparation programs to support preservice teachers' learning and application of basic language concepts.",

            "abstractNote": "Today's teachers need access to a wide range of information to function in the classroom. They need a thorough understanding of how language figures in education, and for that reason they must receive systematic and intensive preparation in educational linguistics. A thorough grounding in linguistics would support teachers' undertakings overall, and in particular in teaching literacy skills and working with English language learners. If approached coherently, such preparation would also cover many of the desired teacher competencies, relating to skills in assessing children, in individualizing instruction, and in respecting diversity. This paper lays out a rationale for why current and prospective teachers need to know more about language, and what specific sorts of knowledge they need.             "abstractNote": "For many striving readers in the early grades (Grades K–3), difficulty learning to read manifests at the word level. As a result, such readers are likely to need explicit instruction in the structure of the English language, also referred to as basic language concepts (i.e., concepts and skills related to phonology, phonics, morphology). However, researchers have found that preservice and in-service teachers generally lack knowledge about and skills related to these concepts. Thus, the purpose of this article is to provide recommendations for teacher educators in both general and special education preparation programs to support preservice teachers' learning and application of basic language concepts.",

            "abstractNote": "The value of teaching grammar in schools has been a subject of widespread and ongoing debate in Anglophone countries. These debates influenced a decline in the explicit teaching of grammar resulting in many teachers currently fronting classrooms having very little knowledge about grammar (KAG). In recent times, grammar has re-emerged in curriculum documents and National literacy assessments. This paper reports on a study which investigated the knowledge and beliefs about grammar and grammar teaching of New Zealand primary school teachers undertaking a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) diploma. Findings suggest that many teachers lack an in-depth knowledge of grammar and that in the absence of professional guidance, base grammar teaching decisions rather haphazardly on their own school experiences and personal beliefs.",

            "abstractNote": "Coaches can provide teachers with quality professional development experiences by mentoring, providing workshops, modeling, or encouraging professional growth (York-Barr & Duke, 2004). This study focuses on the instructional coach's role in the professional development of teachers of English language learners (ELLs). The study has the following findings. First, the coach, acted as a professional developer for teachers of ELLs in the workshop, because she designed and delivered the workshop, mentored teachers, modeled and scaffolded lessons in the lesson-planning process, modeled teaching, and led them to do self-reflection. Second, from the participating teachers' perspective, the instructional coach's knowledge and understanding of academic language made the workshop well-organized. The teachers of ELLs surveyed and interviewed found the instructional coach they worked with to be helpful, organized, and well-informed. Third, less follow-up coaching support and district policy on coaching made the workshop less effective. Two suggestions for coaches to be effective professional developers for language teachers are provided. (Contains 3 tables and 2 figures.)",

            "abstractNote": "The purpose of this article is to describe the Quality Educators Academy (QEA), a year-long training for K-8 classroom teachers that was funded by a NC ESEA Title II-A Improving Teacher Quality (NC QUEST) Grant. Key features of the project as well as the design and content of the training contributed to success in recruiting, retaining, and effectively training classroom teachers to work with ELLs. The authors, who implemented a QEA North Carolina, share what they did in detail so that others interested in equipping classroom teachers with research-based best practices for meeting the needs of English language learners may learn from their efforts. This article describes key features of the project: collaboration, recruitment and selection of participants, professional development design, and training and content delivery. (Contains 1 table.)",
