"abstractNote": "Among those who regard open-mindedness as a virtue, there is dispute over whether the trait is essentially an attitude toward particular beliefs or toward oneself as a believer. I defend William Hare’s account of open-mindedness as a first-order attitude toward one’s beliefs and critique Peter Gardner’s view of open-mindedness as a non-commital posture and Jonathan Adler’s claim that open-mindedness is a second-order recognition of one’s fallibility as a knower. While I reject Adler’s account of open-mindedness as a meta-attitude, I affirm his intuition that there is a closely related second-order intellectual virtue pertaining to the attitude we take toward ourselves as knowers. However, this trait is intellectual humility not open-mindedness. I explain why both of these traits are intellectual virtues and how they properly build off one another in the virtuous mind.",

"abstractNote": "The Pipe Creek Sinkhole (PCS) fossil assemblage (Grant County, Indiana) provides a rare glimpse of a late Neogene (Mio-Pliocene) fossil assemblage paleofauna from the interior of eastern North America. Although PCS has yielded a diverse assemblage of medium-sized and large mammals that includes peccaries, camels, a deer-like ungulate, a rhinoceros, a bear, a felid, canids, and a badger, it has produced an even greater abundance of bones of smaller animals, the vertebrate mesofauna and microfauna (bones of which are collectively designated as vertebrate microfossils). Because such small animals potentially provide much information about the environment in which the fossil assemblage accumulated, we investigated the relative abundance of different constituents of the vertebrate microfossil assemblage.\n\nFossiliferous sediments from the largely unconsolidated sinkhole deposit were wet-screened on site, and the fine fraction of concentrate (retained on a ca. 1-mm mesh screen) later rewashed, after which fossils were picked and sorted. The relative abundance of different categories of small vertebrates was quantified in terms of both the minimum number of individuals (MNI) and the number of identifiable specimens (NISP).\n\nFrog skeletal elements constituted the overwhelming majority of frog bones in the assemblage, followed in decreasing rank order by much smaller abundances of turtles, small mammals, and snakes. The abundance of frogs and turtles is consistent with previous interpretations of the depositional environment of the fossiliferous sediment in a small pond or wetland.",

"abstractNote": "Because of the rapidly changing nature of chemical instrumentation, students must be trained in how to learn and understand new instruments. Toward this end, students are asked to create small instrument manuals, or instrument profiles, for the major pieces of equipment studied during an instrumental analysis course. This writing-intensive process of creating instrument profiles requires that students understand the basics of each type of instrument and that they are able to compare the instrument to other instruments. With the use of block and schematic diagrams, the major components within an instrument are emphasized such that students can discover subtle differences between types of instruments. Students? ability to teach themselves new instruments is demonstrated at the end of the semester by creating an instrument profile for an instrument not specifically discussed during the course and by giving a short oral presentation to the class, providing everyone with brief exposure to many more technologies.",

"abstractNote": "In the process of revising our general education course, which is required of a large fraction of students, we attempted to answer the question \"What should a graduate of a liberal arts university understand about computational technology?\" As computing technology has impacted and created drastic change in nearly all aspects of everyday life, university students may know more about narrow areas of technology but the true impact on their lives cannot be understood without an appreciation for the nature and limitations of the technology. This paper presents a set of assumptions about the impact of technology on individuals and society and describes elements of a computing context designed to enable students to critically evaluate the technology that has such an impact on their lives. Assessment of the approach indicates that students are more aware of the impact of technology and the importance of an understanding of the technology.",
