La obesidad se puede defi\n nir como exceso de grasa corporal, su me-\ndición exacta requiere de técnicas sofi\n sticadas que son de difícil acceso, por lo que se \nhace uso, frecuentemente, de técnicas más sencillas como la antropometría. El índice \nde masa corporal (IMC) se utiliza para evaluar obesidad por su alta correlación con la \nmasa grasa. Existen diferentes tablas de referencia para identifi\n car el sobrepeso y \nla obesidad. La Organización Mundial de la Salud a través del \nInternational Obesity \nTa sk Force\n (2000) proporcionó puntos de corte por sexo en niños y adolescentes de \ndos años a 18 años para el IMC a través de un criterio “prescriptivo” construyendo las \ncurvas del IMC que pasan por los valores de 25 y 30 a los 18 años de edad. Para obtener \nlas curvas de crecimiento de lactantes se desarrolló el estudio de Referencia Multicén-\ntrico de Crecimiento (MCRS, por sus siglas en inglés) auspiciado por varias agencias de \nNaciones Unidas en el que sus curvas muestran el crecimiento de lactantes sanos ali-\nmentados a seno materno. Se considera que el adoptar estos estándares basados en un \nmétodo claramente defi\n nido y grupos multinacionales proporciona valores confi\n ables \ny permite hacer comparaciones internacionales. La importancia de las mediciones de \nla composición corporal en Pediatría, están ganando cada vez mayor reconocimiento, \nya que los cambios físicos que ocurren durante los primeros años de la vida y hasta la \nadolescencia son tanto internos como externos.
