We describe a study and data, which support the assertion that clickers can be used as a data gathering tool for conducting \"real-time\" research on student learning in the classroom setting. We also present data suggesting that students believe the use of clickers (1) is beneficial to their understanding of course concepts; (2) contributes to improving their exam grades; and (3) increases their interest in course topics \"even\" when the clickers are being used solely as research data gathering tools rather than the more traditional application in which clickers are used as an instructional device to gather student votes as part of Think-Pair-Share (TPS) or Peer Instruction (PI). Two experiments, imbedded in classroom curriculum, examined the effects of the instrument of evaluation (with criteria vs. no criteria for evaluation provided), the format of evaluation procedure (anonymous vs. non-anonymous), and motivation of students (strong vs. weak) on the reliability of students' self and peer ratings. The results of the experiments revealed both a considerable unreliability of peer ratings in some cases as well as a notable consistency of peer evaluations in others. The instrument of evaluation with criteria provided had significant positive effect on the reliability of peer evaluations. Students strongly motivated to apply criteria for evaluation also produced more reliable peer evaluations compared to their peers that were weakly motivated to apply them. The results of the impact of the condition of anonymity were mixed. The study found that students exhibit significant \"self-enhancement\" bias by rating their academic performance above that of their peers. The positive self-bias does not disappear when students are offered criteria for evaluation of their work. Self-efficacy is a person's situation-specific belief that he or she can succeed in a given domain. It has been successful in educational and vocational psychology studies at predicting success and persistence. Self-efficacy is not a static attribute, but is affected by a person's experiences and is postulated to change according to four sources--emotional arousal, vicarious learning, performance accomplishment, and social persuasion. Given the success of self-efficacy theory for predicting student success in scientific study, and the demonstrated effect that teaching approaches have on student self-efficacy in majors courses, the purpose of this article is to ask if similar relationships between pedagogy and self-efficacy exist in introductory science courses for non-physical science majors. Scholarship of Teaching is not only improving instruction and learning but also methodically assessing whether specific teaching interventions have had the desired effect. In this paper, the author presents a step-by-step guide for how to develop a Scholarship of Teaching project that is well thought out and worthy of publication. Factors to consider before performing such pedagogical research include developing a clear research hypothesis for the classroom, reviewing the background literature, obtaining Institutional Review Board (Human Subjects) approval, and determining which methods of assessment may be used. This ‘how to’ guide discusses how to handle all of these factors and prepare the data for publication and introduces the reader to references related to the Scholarship of Teaching and learning as well as educational research and theory.
