Our precolonial histories, which illuminate the causal power of, for example, novel technologies and political institutions in explaining historical change, might seem dry and overly instrumental to colleagues (and students) studying more recent periods or other world regions because they lack the narrative depth of human emotion. Incorporating the affective dimensions of life into histories of early African societies holds great promise for bringing much needed subjectivity to central themes of early African history, making it \"legible\" to a broader audience, and for transforming how we understand the developments to which we already assign great explanatory power. Indeed, narratives about the development of political institutions, the spread of technologies like metallurgy, cattle keeping, and cereal cropping and even the familiar problem of the Bantu Expansions may well be comprehensible only when we know more about the subjective emotional stakes for the agents of these transformations. specific emotional registers to create an imagined community across very diverse cultures. This article discusses the social regulation of emotions and the indigenous responses to a Moravian emotional style as part of the conversion process on Moravian missions in the eighteenth century. One of the core elements of Moravian spiritual conversion and identity was the love of Christ and his spiritual sufferings which was expected to be displayed in specific ways by converts. Moravian understandings of Christ's love and conversion included a strong somatic component, spiritual states were expressed in attributes and states of the heart, such as a “warm” or a “cold” heart. Tears, which were believed to flow from the heart, are another indicator of spiritual condition and linked to conversion. The historical meaning of this Moravian love was, however, far from being non-ambiguous. The goal has been to provide readers with a wide-ranging consideration of a topic at a high level of expertise, in which the participants are recruited across several fields and periods. It is the sort of publishing project that this journal is uniquely positioned to undertake. This year's topic is “The Historical Study of Emotions.” Given the expanding range of new methodological and disciplinary forays among historians in recent years, it may be too much to proclaim that we are witnessing an “Emotional Turn.” (Indeed, one conclusion that might be drawn from the June 2012 AHR Forum on “Historiographic ‘Turns’ in Critical Perspective” is that the very concept of “turns” may have outlived its intellectual usefulness.) But it cannot be denied that the study of emotions has become a thriving pursuit among historians from many different areas and periods. Not only does its emergence as a legitimate subfield foster the interrogation of descriptors—love, hate, resentment, passions, pity, happiness, and the like—that historians are more often likely to use uncritically if at all; it also allows for the crossing of the boundaries between private and public, the personal and collective, that often constrain our work. To be sure, a major problem with the study of emotions is how we can access the emotional lives of people in past times: is it possible to go beyond emotional expressions—usually conveyed in language—and attain some assurance that these are indicative of actual emotional states? This is only one of the questions confronted in the course of this wide-ranging conversation. Joining the Editor in this conversation are Nicole Eustace, a historian of early America; Eugenia Lean, who studies modern Chinese history, literature, and culture; Julie Livingston, a historian who works in Africa; Jan Plamper, a specialist in Soviet and Russian history; William M. Drawing upon a sample of breach of promise of marriage actions from 1824 to 1930, it argues that where the plaintiff’s pain was largely presumed in the nineteenth century, by the twentieth century mastering the language and performance of anguish became crucial to legal success. The less that women suffered socially from romantic disappointment, the more they sought to prove it in court. Women dressed the lesions of their hearts in the disinterested language of medicine and borrowed psychological categories of trauma from victims of war and railway injuries. Heartbreak was thus legitimized as a species of pain by a convergence of law, medicine and women’s audacity to take their feelings seriously. The court’s response to these new bodily articulations of suffering provides a counter-history to the usual tale of law’s preference for the tangible over the intangible. Somatic injury was relegated to special damages, determined by the evidence of doctors and with less lucrative compensation, while emotional injury occupied the dominant, more profitable category of general damages. This article traces the ways in which both local and national newspapers reported on one of the rare cases which a woman was sentenced to death for the murder of her baby: the 1909 trial of Alice Cleaver at the Central Criminal Court. Despite clear evidence of her guilt, newspapers focused instead on the ways in which the defendant had conformed to ideas about respectable femininity, and were united in depicting Cleaver as deserving of judicial and public sympathy. This is due to the fact that this was the era that ushered in the modern bestseller, novels that more often than not explored the everyday and the emotional, novels that were thought to have been ‘devoured’ by women in particular. This essay plots recent developments in the burgeoning area of emotions history, as well as those that have taken place in relation to the use of fiction as evidence in a history of women’s interior lives. This was the period when the feud between the Houses of Burgundy and of Orleans escalated into full-scale civil war (by October 1411), and the realm was torn apart by violent factionalism. Typically condemnatory in nature, the documents recorded the menu peuple’s involvement in the conflict and emphasized the weakness of the menu peuple in allowing themselves to be led by their emotions. Because of their perceived frailty and volatility, clear attempts were made to control their emotions by limiting the opportunities for provocation, namely by restricting assemblies and the publication of letters. However, the royal mandates and political maneuverings of the ruling elite also suggest that they recognized that urban political affect was an important force to be taken seriously, not least because it could challenge their own power. Collective emotional expressions gave the menu peuple voice, and the affective bonds urban groups formed, particularly when expressing shared emotions like joy or anger, constructed important political identities. Therefore, rather than seeking only to prevent or reduce the emotion of diverse urban bodies, ruling elites were interested in cooperating with this strong political force.
