Il est frontalier au Nord avec la Guinée-Equatoriale et le Cameroun, au Nord-Est et au Sud avec le Congo. Le constat révèle que ces zones transfrontalières subissent une forte activité de braconnage des éléphants pour l’ivoire (Okouyi J., 2013 ; WWF, 2020). Poulsen J. R. et al. (2017) estiment que le nombre d’éléphants a largement diminué, soit une perte de plus de 25 000 pachydermes en 10 ans. En effet, le braconnage transfrontalier a grandement participé au déclin du nombre d’éléphants. D’après White L. (2017), le braconnage n’est plus vu simplement comme un problème lié à la gestion de la faune ; mais désormais, il représente « une problématique sécuritaire et économique ». A juste titre, le Gouvernement gabonais s’est vivement engagé à proposer des stratégies de gestion, afin de lutter contre ce trafic. Les données de l’étude réalisée proviennent des enquêtes socio-économiques, des rapports de mission de lutte antibraconnage au Parc national de Mwagna entre 2019 et 2021, des entretiens auprès de la Direction de la lutte anti-braconnage et de la Direction Technique de l’Agence Nationale des Parcs Nationaux. Ces données ont été saisies et traitées avec le logiciel Microsoft Excel 2013, afin de concevoir des tableaux et des graphiques exploités et analysés. Ainsi, l’état des lieux, réalisé à la frontière nord-est du Gabon avec le Congo, a mis en évidence une forte pression sur les éléphants pour le commerce illicite de l’ivoire.&nbsp;</p><p>Gabon is a Central African country with a surface area of 267667 km². It borders Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon to the north, and Congo to the northeast and south. Findings reveal that these cross-border areas are subject to heavy elephant poaching activity for ivory (Okouyi J., 2013; WWF, 2020). Poulsen J. R. et al. (2017) estimate that elephant numbers have largely declined, with a loss of over 25,000 pachyderms in 10 years. Crossborder poaching has played a major role in the decline in elephant numbers. According to White L. (2017), poaching is no longer seen simply as a wildlife management problem; it now represents "a security and economic issue". Rightly so, the Gabonese government is strongly committed to proposing management strategies to combat this traffic. The data for the study was drawn from socio-economic surveys, reports on anti-poaching missions to Mwagna National Park between 2019 and 2021, and interviews with the anti-poaching directorate and the technical directorate of the National Parks Agency. These species lack the distinctive plagiotropic (perpendicular and horizontal) aerial reproductive stems seen in most woody Ardisia species of Africa (instead sporadically producing rooting ascending stems from the horizontal stem) and have distichous leaves (not spiralled as in most species in Africa). Accordingly, they are proposed as a separate subgenus Kamardisia. Study of herbarium material revealed that six additional species exist which are described and illustrated in this paper, together with preliminary conservation assessments. These are: A. hansii (South Region, Cameroon and Belinga, Gabon), A. massaha (Belinga, Gabon), A. chaillu, A. minuta, A. waka (all Chaillu Massif, Gabon), A. ngounie (Ogooué-Maritime, Gabon). We provide a key to the identification of the nine herbaceous species, provide preliminary conservation assessments for each, and notes on shared characteristics of the African herbaceous species including the taxonomic value of leaf microcharacters (oil glands and trichomes). We also make a preliminary report on the possibility of bacterial colonisation of marginal leaf pores in some of these herbaceous species. All of the species are range restricted, the most wide-ranging with only three sites. All but one species is threatened, and almost all of those are Critically Endangered (provisional assessments). The two first published species have not been seen for more than 125 years, despite being in easily accessible, well-botanised locations, and are both feared extinct. The Rabi Forest Monitoring Plot (RFMP) in Gabon is part of the Smithsonian Institution’s ForestGEO network and is managed through a collaboration between Gabonese national scientific institutions, private industry, and the Smithsonian. Located within government-allocated logging and hydrocarbon concessions in the Gamba Complex of Protected Areas in southwest Gabon, the RFMP lies in a previously logged forest, making it particularly well-suited for studies on forest regeneration and a valuable site for multidisciplinary research. Tree Species of the Rabi Forest Monitoring Plot, Gabon is designed as a field guide to the trees found in this representative Guineo-Congolian rainforest. Based on data from a single census, the authors document 340 tree taxa from 55 families and 193 genera recorded in the plot—including 310 fully described species and 30 incompletely identified taxa, several of which may be new to science. Each taxon description includes information on size, vegetative and reproductive characteristics, taxonomic notes, distinguishing features, geographical distribution, and uses. Descriptions are illustrated with photographs of leaves, flowers, and fruits, as well as maps showing the spatial distribution of individual trees in the RFMP and histograms illustrating their size distribution.

Despite their widespread cultural importance, the ethnobotanical diversity and sociocultural dynamics underpinning their use remain poorly documented.\nMethods: Ethnobotanical surveys were conducted among 15 ethnolinguistic groups across five provinces in Gabon. A total of 1,180 semi-structured interviews were carried out with knowledgeable practitioners of traditional herbal medicine, in order to document local perceptions, therapeutic uses, preparation techniques, and the sociocultural contexts associated with the use of Dialium species. Data were analyzed using Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) to identify distinct ethnobotanical patterns among communities.\nResults: Significant variations were observed in the transmission and application of traditional knowledge, strongly influenced by sociocultural factors such as marital status. Elderly respondents, along with married or widowed individuals, exhibited notably deeper ethnobotanical knowledge, highlighting their key roles as custodians of traditional practices. Medicinal uses dominated, particularly for the treatment of febrile illnesses (e.g., malaria, typhoid), reproductive disorders, and parasitic infections. Additionally, ritualistic and practical uses underscored the multifunctional nature of Omvong species. MCA revealed distinct usage patterns correlated with ecological availability and cultural specificities: the Baka community displayed highly homogeneous knowledge transmission, whereas groups such as Akele and Galoa exhibited more fragmented knowledge systems.\nConclusions: This study underscores the cultural and therapeutic significance of Omvong in Gabonese ethnomedicine, highlighting the necessity of integrating traditional ethnobotanical knowledge into sustainable healthcare and natural resource management strategies. Using a socio-ecological system (SES) approach in a forest-swamp-savannah mosaic within the Bas-Ogooué Ramsar site in Gabon, we assess how human populations participate in landscape dynamics over time. We first conducted a remote sensing analysis to produce a land-cover map representing the biophysical dimension of the SES. This map is based on pixel-oriented classifications, using a 2017 Sentinel-2 satellite image and 610 GPS points, that categorized the landscape in 11 ecological classes. To study the landscape’s social dimension, we collected data on local knowledge to understand how local people perceive and use the landscape. These data were collected through 19 semi-structured individual interviews, three focus groups and 3 months of participant observation during an immersive field mission. We developed a systemic approach by combining data on biophysical and social dimensions of the landscape. Our analysis shows that in the absence of continued anthropic interventions, both savannahs and swamps dominated by herbaceous vegetation will experience closure by encroaching woody vegetation, leading to eventual biodiversity loss. Our methodology based on an SES approach to landscapes could improve the conservation programs developed by Ramsar site managers. The rivers near these mining sites are subject to chemical contamination and physical transformations linked to the input of materials, which can even transform the course of the river. This study focuses on an area influenced by 40 years of mining and which has undergone a physical restoration process: the Moulili River in Gabon. Metal element analyses were carried out on surface sediments and at a depth of 40 cm. Results showed that even if potentially toxic metals content is high, the enrichment factor show no enrichment in Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn (< 1). However, all showed moderate enrichment in Pb, and most in Cr (> 1) and Sn (> 3). For tin, the CDT samples leaving the washery had the highest Efs. The results show that enrichment changes with distance, as do the environmental impact indices, but also that these indices are not necessarily suitable for areas where the parent rock is itself rich in metallic elements. Along the river, the abatement rate gives the values of Pb (36.5 mg kg−1 km−1), Ni (138.14 mg kg−1 km−1), Cu (119.10 mg kg−1 km−1) and Zn (125.8 mg kg−1 km−1). In this study, we use GPS tracking data from two elephants to characterize temporal patterns of village visitation, and surveys of 101 local farmers across seven villages to determine local patterns of crop planting and harvesting and of human–elephant interactions. Local farmers' perceptions of elephant visitations and empirical data on such visits were positively correlated with local crop availability. However, considering the two elephants separately revealed that the correlations were driven by just one individual, with the second elephant showing weak links between crop availability and visitation, highlighting the challenges in reliably predicting human–wildlife interactions. The most popular local perceptions of the drivers of elephant visitation were the presence of crops (53% of responses) and logging (39%). The most popular proposed interventions were letting the government find a solution (32%), killing problem elephants (30%) and providing compensation for lost crops (22%). We discuss the potential feasibility and efficacy of the proposed solutions in the context of human–elephant interactions. Future research efforts should focus on collaring elephants in zones with high potential for negative human–elephant interaction and expanding perception surveys to villages with contrasting ecological contexts (e.g. with and without logging in their surrounding forests), as these could influence local perceptions of conflicts and conservation initiatives.", "publicationTitle": "Oryx", environmental and resource management, providing effective frameworks for considering environmental, social, cultural, institutional and economic variables within a common biogeographic context. The Akanda National Park (ANP) in Gabon, almost exclusively constituted by mangroves, is part of a green belt of protected areas around the capital city of Libreville. The creation of the ANP is considered as an essential tool for the ecosystemic management of fisheries in Mondah Bay, playing nursery function for several exploited fish species. However, this role has never been documented in the mangroves of Gabon. The aim of this study is to describe the spatial and seasonal variability of fish assemblages, to assess ANP mangrove role as a nursery for fish juveniles. Fish sampling was carried out at four different sites in the four hydroclimatic seasons in Gabon using trammel gillnets with different mesh size (10, 27 and 40 mm). Fifty-nine fish species mainly estuarine and marine, first and second level predators were collected whatever the season and the site. The numerically dominant species were Pseudotolithus elongatus, Pellonula leonensis and Parachelon grandisquamis (48% of the total number of individuals), whereas P. elongatus, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus and Plectorhinchus macrolepis represented the main biomasses (55%). The predominance in the catches of immature individuals of many species of commercial interest and in particular, P. elongatus, P. grandisquamis, C. nigrodigitatus, Eucinostomus melanopterus, Neochelon falcipinnis and Polydactylus quadrifilis, which dominate the community, highlights the importance of Akanda mangrove as a nursery for the juveniles of these species.
