"abstractNote": "In March 2003, New York City implemented legislation that called for a ban of smoking in bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and other establishments. The express purpose of this legislation was to protect the health of employees and patrons from second-hand smoke. In addition to the stated goal of protection from second-hand smoke for employees, key secondary health effects of this law have emerged in the lives of club-going youth. This paper is based upon data derived from an ethnographic research project on club-related health issues in NYC. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork during the implementation of the ban and in-depth interviews with club-going youth, the paper provides a grounded analysis of youth reactions to the smoking ban and a descriptive profile of the secondary health effects of the smoking ban in nightclubs. It explores the attitudes of club-going youth towards the ban and the ways in which the legislation shapes the behaviours of habitual smokers, ‘social smoking’, and the use of drugs within bars and clubs. In particular, the data suggest a tension between the desire to remain subculturally involved and the desire to smoke. It also highlights the adaptive character of subcultures and the importance of social relations in behavioural patterns.",

This study aimed to explore children's accounts of family members' smoking in the home and car and the impact of their socio-economic circumstances.\n\n\nDesign\n\nIndividual and friendship group interviews using topic guides and visual stimulus methods.\n\n\nSetting\n\nTwo communities in Edinburgh, Scotland, one socio-economically advantaged, one socio-economically disadvantaged.\n\n\nParticipants\n\nThirty-eight children aged 10–15 years who had a close family member who smoked.\n\n\nMeasurements\n\nFocus group and interview topic guides.\n\n\nFindings\n\nParticipants in both communities expressed a strong dislike of family members' smoking and concern about the potential impact on the smoker's health. Participants described overt and covert acts of resistance, including challenging relatives about their smoking, expressing disgust and concern, hiding or destroying cigarettes. Some acts were carried out in collusion with a non-smoking parent and/or sibling. Resistant acts were constrained by expectations of negative responses, which appeared to increase with age, wider social norms around smoking and whether or not the young person smoked.\n\n\nConclusions\n\nSome children and young people in the United Kingdom, irrespective of socio-economic status, may actively oppose parents' smoking in the home and car, although their influence may be limited by their position in the family and social norms.",

"abstractNote": "Over the past decade, the strategy of ‘denormalising’ tobacco use has become one of the cornerstones of the global tobacco control movement. Although tobacco denormalisation policies primarily affect people on the lowest rungs of the social ladder, few qualitative studies have explicitly set out to explore how smokers have experienced and responded to these legislative and social changes in attitudes towards tobacco use. Drawing on a qualitative study of interviews with 25 current and ex-smokers living in Vancouver, Canada, this paper examines the ways they interpret and respond to the new socio-political environment in which they must manage the increasingly problematised practice of tobacco smoking. Overall, while not opposed to smoking restrictions per se, study participants felt that recent legislation, particularly efforts to prohibit smoking in a variety of outdoor settings, was overly restrictive and that all public space had increasingly been ‘claimed’ by non-smokers. Also apparent from participants’ accounts was the high degree of stigma attached to smoking. However, although the ‘denormalisation’ environment had encouraged several participants to quit smoking, the majority continued to smoke, raising ethical and practical questions about the value of denormalisation strategies as a way of reducing smoking-related mortality and morbidity.",

Analysis is grounded in interviews with 5 moral entrepreneurs who spearheaded the antismoking crusade & 5 status quo defenders who opposed it, a content analysis of 105 letters to the editor, & public documentary data on the pro- & antiban letter writers' cumulative property values. Findings reveal that moral entrepreneurs & pro-ban letter writers focused on health risks thought to be associated with secondhand smoke, & opponents focused on the individual right to smoke. As expected, status also differentiated the pro- & antiban groups, consistent with theorizing about the role of status politics in the creation of deviant types. 1 Table, 28 References. "abstractNote": "Examines health narratives deployed in the 1990s antismoking campaign in CA, drawing on an analysis of four advertisements. The ads are interpreted as constructing two views: (1) a melodramatic image of family households under threat & (2) the commonsense perception of the relation among secondhand smoke, health, & risk. In this nexus, an old social landscape inhabited by smokers, particularly men of color, is juxtaposed to a new landscape occupied by healthy, white middle-class families. Further, the new healthy family is juxtaposed to images of oppressive or dysfunctional communities of color & their private lives. This new common sense recruits Californians as caring citizens, witnesses to scientific fact, & new agents of public health policy. This tendency to construct facts through a discourse of the white, middle-class family is found not only in these ads, but in the entire media campaign against secondhand smoking. It is concluded that this campaign is but one instance of a wider movement toward the creation of a totally administered society that operates through punitive sovereignty, therapeutic discipline, & neoliberal self-government. 69 References. "abstractNote": "Since the mid-1990s, the position that 'no amount of secondhand smoke is safe' has achieved hegemonic status in the field of public health. This has bolstered efforts in the tobacco control community to advocate for smoke-free legislation and a variety of countries around the world have implemented indoor smoking bans, with many others presently following suit. This article examines why secondhand smoke has been such a central focus in tobacco control and public health policy, despite the limitations of the available evidence base on its health impacts. I argue that public health responses to secondhand smoke can only be understood in relation to the liminal and transitive qualities of cigarette smoke and its capacity to dissolve the boundaries between bodies. My key goal is to illustrate the influence of cultural assessments about the nature of 'risk' on epidemiological standards of evidence. I contend that the subjectively experienced abjectness of cigarette smoke far more than the 'objectively' demonstrable harms to health it causes ultimately explains both popular and public health responses to the substance. "abstractNote": "While much is known about the impact of law and public policy, we know considerably less about their antecedents. Theories of policy adoption suggest that a variety of policy inputs help to shape legislative change. This research considers the enactment of municipal smoking bylaws in Canada between 1970 and 1995. The emergence of second-hand smoke (SHS) has been offered as a viable explanation for the increased enactment of local smoking restrictions. A number of indicators confirm the rising public health concern around SHS. Using Health Canada data on municipal smoking bylaw enactment in Canada, this paper employs an event history analysis to trace the role of four indicators of the increased recognition of SHS as a public health concern—scientific research, parliamentary debate, print media, and health advocacy. Findings indicate that the print media and health advocacy play the strongest role in explaining the increase in the adoption of municipal smoking bylaws in Canada. Results lend support to the quantitative study of the policy adoption process and to theories of policy making that consider multiple influences on policy adoption.",

"abstractNote": "'Thirdhand smoke', the designated term for the cigarette smoke toxicants that linger on room and car surfaces long after the smoke itself dissipates, is a concept that has gained increasing prominence in tobacco control policy and research over the past six years. In this paper, I track the emergence of thirdhand smoke as a social and scientific concept, conducting a critical analysis of newspaper reports and references to the term in the academic and policy literature. Demonstrating that claims about the health effects of thirdhand smoke occurred in the absence of evidence of harm, I examine the broader sociopolitical conditions that enabled the concept to become meaningful (and useful). I show that some of the concept's legitimacy came from its presentation as a natural extension of secondhand smoke, and its framing as a particular threat to babies and children. However, I argue that the experiential, embodied dimension of thirdhand smoke itself was crucial to its success. Adapted from the source document.",
