"abstractNote": "This review explores questions of power, epistemology, cultural form, and historical process, as they are raised by and developed in studies of literacy. It begins by reviewing arguments for universalist vs situated accounts of literacy and literacies. Having discussed universalist claims and evidence, and having shown that they cannot withstand criticism, the review develops generalizations about the implications of plural literacies. It explores the relationship among modem state formation, educational systems, and official vs popular literacies, by drawing on poststructuralist arguments about the role of writing in social formations and on recent historical and ethnographic research on literacy. It analyzes the role of literacies in the formation of class, gender, and racial-ethnic identities, by focusing on the role of education in class stratification, the debate about public vs private in gender dynamics, and the volatile relations between oppressed nationalities and official literacies.",

"abstractNote": "In this paper, we argue that the communicative approach to language teaching should be enriched with concepts and objectives coming from critical theories on language and discourse and, more specifically, from ethnographically informed approaches exploiting students' cultural background and experiences from their everyday social reality. Based on current sociolinguistic findings, special attention is paid to narrative as a discourse genre commonly used in everyday encounters. We develop an educational framework involving the comparative analysis of oral narrative material and focusing on the identities constructed by the narrator(s). The proposed model aims at raising students' critical language awareness by training them to identify and compare the subversive core of narratives and the evaluative stances emerging therein.",

"abstractNote": "During the late 1970s, English studies journals began to include various versions of, and proposals built upon, the Great Leap theory of literacy. Advocates of this theory claimed that literacy itself actually caused a \"great leap\" in human cognition and that the language of literate persons was essentially different from the language of oral people: oral people used coordination, which revealed their additive, holistic ways of thinking, whereas literate persons used subordination, an indicator of their analytic thought processes. Different theorists subscribed to different versions of the Great Leap theory, among them Walter Ong--one of the chief names associated with it--who assumed (1) that literacy-orality differences lay both in the physical world (i.e., sight and sound) and in the innate universal capacities and limits of the human mind; (2) that language was a transparent medium through which, if read properly, one could apprehend actual human thought processes; and (3) that both language and other human productions could be neutral. This perspective on literacy and the world view it embodied, reflected, and taught might have been part of the general retreat of American society from political and social questions raised during the 1960s. "abstractNote": "This article describes a \"critical literacy\" approach to teaching an introductory course in academic writing to a group of students socially marginalized by poverty and prejudice. In this approach, the author asks students to identify research areas of personal interest to themselves by drawing on their own lives to generate meaningful topics, to engage in critical dialogue about their work, and to write in a scholarly style without becoming alienated from their work. She also welcomes students' critical observations on their own experience of dominant culture and invites them to scrutinize the academic world they are entering as an institution that participates fully in systems of privilege and power. In her experience, much of the work done by students engaged in a such an approach demonstrates a higher degree of the critical insight and serious-minded knowledge-building valued in academia than is normally seen in introductory writing courses. She articulates a rationale for using this empowerment-based method of teaching academic writing in the face of calls for a return to traditional methods, and provide an analysis centred in Critical Literacy theory to account for its successes and challenges. "abstractNote": "Describes critical literacy theory, gives a rationale for including critical literacy in the instruction of struggling readers, and gives practical applications for classroom instruction. Critical literacy is a way of thinking about texts that goes beyond comprehension. Although most struggling adolescent readers need to be supported in basic reading skills and strategies, they should also learn how to read and think about texts from a critical literacy perspective. Critical literacy instruction can provide adolescents with the kinds of thinking they need in order to address larger societal issues and to become functioning citizens in a democratic nation. In addition, critical literacy can help students think beyond schooling and apply critical thinking strategies to media that they experience on a daily basis. Finally, by moving from critical literacy to social action, students who may be disengaged from school and learning can find hope and recapture their natural optimism about life. When students learn how to move from thinking critically to taking social action, they learn how to make sense of the complexity of the world around them, through involvement in the kinds of actions that benefit not only themselves, but also the larger world.
