Mais l’effet « boule de neige » qui dynamise un territoire qui voit sa fréquentation touristique augmenter peut‐il être espéré aussi quand il s’agit de l’inscription d’un élément culturel immatériel, qui ne se « visite » pas, qui n’est pas même « contemplable » ? En effet, la non matérialité d’un élément culturel peut laisser penser que les effets positifs de valorisation et de transmission attendus d’une inscription ne se produiront pas car la notion de patrimoine culturel immatériel est floue, peu consensuelle et dépendante de la volonté et l’implication de la population, des acteurs politiques, associatifs et institutionnels sur place. La question sera étudiée à travers l’exemple du maloya, musique traditionnelle de La Réunion, inscrite sur la liste représentative du patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité en 2009. Né du mélange culturel entre les esclaves, puis les engagés, de toutes origines, arrivés sur l’île au cours de l’Histoire, le maloya a longtemps été interdit, et a failli disparaître dans les processus d’assimilation, souvent proches de ceux d’acculturation.
