The Poplin Family of Sumter, South Carolina met with partial success in the folk revival of the 1960s. After a brief period of national exposure, their national career faded and they returned to local performances. Through archival research and ethnographic research with musicians, record producers, and family and community members, this thesis traces their career, and identifies the processes by which their music was edited and reframed as \"folk.\" Beyond the story of a single band, this research illuminates the flows of power within the folk revival, and draws conclusions about the ideological underpinnings of the revival.",

"abstractNote": "\"Transforming Tradition offers the first serious look at folksong revivals, vibrant meldings of popular and folk culture that captured public awareness in the 1950s and 1960s. Best remembered for such songs as \"Tom Dooley\" and for performers like the Kingston Trio and Joan Baez, the revival of that era gave rise to hootenannies, coffeehouses, and blues and bluegrass festivals, sowing a legacy of popular interest that lives today.\" \"Many of the contributors to this volume were themselves performers in folksong revivals; today they are scholars in folklore, ethnomusicology, and American and Canadian cultural history. As both insiders and analysts they bring unique perspectives and new insights to the study of revivals.\" \"In his introduction, Neil Rosenberg explores central issues such as the history of folksong revivals, stereotypes of \"folksingers,\" connections between scholarship and popularization, meanings of the word \"revival,\" questions of authenticity and the invention of culture, and issues surrounding reflexive scholarship.\" \"The individual studies are divided into three sections. The first covers the \"Great Boom\" revival of the late '50s and early '60s, and the next approaches the revival as a self-contained social culture with its own \"new aesthetic\" and in-group values. The last looks at revival activities in systems of musical culture including the blues, old-time fiddling, Northumbrian piping, and bluegrass, with particular emphasis on perceptions of insider and outsider roles.\". \"The contributors display keen awareness of how their own perceptions have been shaped by their early, more subjective involvement. For example, Archie Green explores his service as faculty guru to the Campus Folksong Club at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign during the 1960s. Kenneth S. Goldstein considers how intellectual issues of the \"great boom\" shaped his work for recording companies. Sheldon Posen uses autobiography as ethnography to explain what happened to him when he moved from revival to academe. And Toru Mitsui explains how and why American country old-time, and bluegrass music became popular in Japan.\"--BOOK JACKET.",

In fact, the earlier institutionalization of country music, particularly in radio broadcasts, emerged from a wider swath of regional and ethnic folk music. William Howland Kenney offers a full account of what he calls \"the 78 r.p.m. era\" - from the formative early decades in which the giants of the record industry reigned supreme in the absence of radio, to the postwar proliferation of independent labels, disk jockeys, and changes in popular taste and opinion. By examining the interplay between recorded music and the key social, political, and economic forces in America during the phonograph's rise and fall as the dominant medium of popular recorded sound, he addresses such vital issues as the place of multiculturalism in the phonograph's history, the roles of women as record-player listeners and performers, the belated commercial legitimacy of rhythm-and-blues recordings, the \"hit record\" phenomenon in the wake of the Great Depression, the origins of the rock-and-roll revolution, and the shifting place of popular recorded music in America's personal and cultural memories.\" \"Students and scholars of American music, culture, commerce, and history - as well as fans and collectors interested in this phase of our nation's rich artistic past - will find a great deal of thorough research and fresh scholarship to enjoy in these pages.\"--BOOK JACKET",

"extra": "\"Steve Goodson's social and cultural history of the New South's \"Gate City\" looks at the variety of public amusements available to Atlantans from the end of Reconstruction to the eve of the Great Depression, including theater, vaudeville, dime museums, movies, radio, and classical, blues, and country music. By showing how Atlantans embraced or condemned everything from burlesque to opera, Goodson reveals a city unsure of its identity and acutely sensitive to its image in the eyes of the nation.\" \"While the general populace hungered for novelty and diversion, middle-class Atlantans, white and black, saw entertainment as a source of - or threat to - status and respectability. Goodson traces the roots of this tension to the city's rapid and problematic growth, its uncomfortably diverse population, and its multiplying ties to national markets. At the same time he portrays some lively individuals who shaped Atlanta's entertainment scene. Among them are impresario Laurent DeGive, tightrope walker Professor Leon, patent-medicine salesman Yellowstone Kit, country music great Fiddlin' John Carson, and blues legends Bessie Smith and Blind Willie McTell. Goodson also brings to life the atmosphere of such venues as DeGive's resplendent Grand Opera House, George Johnson's tacky Museum of Living Wonders, the pioneering Trocadero vaudeville house, and the notorius 81 Theatre on Decatur Street, an avenue whose decadent promise rivaled that of Beale in Memphis and Bourbon in New Orleans. Milestone trends and events are also showcased: performances of the play Uncle Tom's Cabin and showings of the film Birth of a Nation, visits by the Metropolitan Opera Company, the debate over Sunday entertainment, the beginnings of broadcasts by \"The Voice of the South\" - radio station WSB - and the rise of Atlanta as the earliest capital of country and blues recording.\"--BOOK JACKET",

Thompson Jr. chronicles the Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935, which made national news and exposed the far-reaching and pervasive tendrils of Appalachia's local moonshine economy. Thompson, whose ancestors were involved in the area's moonshine trade and trial as well as local law enforcement, uses the event as a stepping-off point to explore Blue Ridge Mountain culture, economy, and political engagement in the 1930s. Drawing from extensive oral histories and local archival material, he illustrates how the moonshine trade was a rational and savvy choice for struggling farmers and community members during the Great Depression. Local characters come alive through this richly colorful narrative, including the stories of Miss Ora Harrison, a key witness for the defense and an Episcopalian missionary to the region, and Elder Goode Hash, an itinerant Primitive Baptist preacher and juror in a related murder trial. Considering the complex interactions of religion, economics, local history, Appalachian culture, and immigration, Thompson's sensitive analysis examines the people and processes involved in turning a basic agricultural commodity into such a sought-after and essentially American spirit\"-- \"Following the end of Prohibition in 1933, demand for moonshine remained high due to taxes imposed on large liquor producers. Seeking to answer this demand were the distillers of Appalachia who, having established illegal networks of moonshine distribution under Prohibition, continued their activities and effectively skirted the federal liquor tax scheme. Spirits of Just Men chronicles the Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935, held in Franklin County, Virginia, a place that many still refer to as the \"Moonshine Capital of the World.\" While the trial itself made national news, Thompson uses the event as a stepping-off point to explore Blue Ridge Mountain culture, economy, and political engagement in the 1930 illustrating how participation in the moonshine trade was a rational and savvy choice for farmers and community members struggling to maintain their way of life amidst the pressures of the Great Depression and pull of the timber and coal-mining industries in Virginia. Through Thompson's prose, local characters come alive as he pays particular attention to the stories of a key witness for the defense, Miss Ora Harrison, an Episcopalian missionary to the region, and Elder Goode Hash, itinerant Primitive Baptist preacher and juror in a related murder trial. Thompson explores how local religious belief both clashed with and condoned the moonshine trade and how stills and the trade enabled a distinctive cultural formation in the region that goes far beyond the hillbilly stereotype alive today. Not only is his work based on extensive oral histories and local archival material, but Thompson himself is from the area and his grandparents were involved in not only the moonshine trade but the trial as well\"--",
