In the past few years the city and state governments of Rio de Janeiro invested billions of dollars in sporting, tourist, transportation and security infrastructures for the 2007 Pan American Games and hundreds of millions of dollars preparing for the 2014 World Cup and bidding (twice) for the 2016 Olympics. By looking at the historical trajectory of mega-events in Rio de Janeiro, I argue that there has been a discernable shift in the ideologies that drive the production of mega-events in the city. These logics have discursively and materially shifted from more localized expressions of notions of social inclusion and industrial democracy in the mid-20th century to reflect the socio-spatial exigencies of capital in a period of accelerated globalization. I suggest that mega-events impose a neo-liberal \"shock doctrine\", installing temporary regimes of extra-legal governance that permanently transform socio-space in Rio de Janeiro. Este artigo examina como discursos sobre desenvolvimento urbano e disciplina socio-espacial são usados para promover projetos de infrastructura associados com os mega-eventos internacionais no Rio de Janeiro. Nos últimos anos os governos da cidade e do estado do Rio de Janeiro investiram bilhões de dólares em infrastruturas esportivas, túristicas, de transporte e de segurança para os Jogos Panamericanos e centenas de milhões dos dólares para a Copa do Mundo de 2014 e em duas tentativas de conseguir os Jogos Olímpicos. Ao analisar a trajetória histórica dos mega-eventos no Rio de Janeiro, eu mostro que as ideologias que dirigem a sua produção sofreram mudanças profundas. Elas se transformaram, discursivamente e materialmente, de noções de inclusao social e de democracia industrial no meio do século 20 para refletir as exigencias socio-spaciais do capital em um período de globalização acelerada. Although prior research has addressed the direct influence of CSR on consumer responses, this research examined the mediating influence of consumer's perceived organizational motives within an NGO setting.Given the heightened public attention surrounding the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, data were collected from consumers of the Games to assess their perceptions of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) socially responsible initiatives. We hypothesized that consumers of the Games were likely to cognitively elaborate on CSR messages by way of three specific attribution effects derived from the literature. The results show that, contingent on CSR awareness, consumers responded positively to social efforts judged to be values-driven and stakeholder-driven; and a negative response was seen for efforts judged to be strategic. The philosophy of Olympism requires ethical authority in demonstrating 'fitness' to host the Games, so demanding intensive strategic image management. Offensive and defensive mobilization of image-dependent 'species of power' in the field of sport (in a Bourdieusian sense) in conducting 'wars of position and movement' (following Gramsci) within global civil society are, then, crucial features of competitive manoeuvres around staging major sport events. The main empirical focus of this article is on the case of the Sydney 2000 ('Millennial') Games, in illustrating the socio-political dynamics of bidding and hosting in the context of a major civil societal matter of concern — Australia's continuing failure to achieve reconciliation with, and equality for, its indigenous peoples. Ironically, though, it was in the domain of human rights that Sydney had an advantage over its closest competitor in the 1993 bidding process — China. The strategies deployed to secure the consent of Australian Aborigines to the Games are addressed in analysing the means by which the Sydney 2000 Games avoided major disruption and international criticism. A second, briefer case analysis is then presented of the disputation concerning Beijing's successful bid for the 2008 Olympics, which saw them influentially described by one (US) political activist as the 'Genocide Games' and the subject of international protests surrounding the Torch Relay. It is concluded that the contrasting levels of public, mediated discord in these two Olympiads in which human rights were key issues related, significantly though not exclusively, to the Chinese authorities' difficulties in 'winning consent' through strategic incorporation of the most conspicuous, non-state oppositional forces within Western-dominated global civil society in its most However, in the current global financial climate, these debt-financed urban renewal strategies are not without significant risk for both public and private partners. This article examines how, as a result of the 2008 economic crisis and a number of undisclosed local political commitments, Vancouver inherited the entire responsibility for the construction of the 2010 Winter Olympic Village.
