Its objectives were: 1) to estimate the abundance parameters of targeted mammal species, 2) to map their spatial distribution, with an estimate of the spatial occupancy rate, 3) to estimate the intensity of anthropogenic activities and to identify areas of high pressure, 4) to assess main factors that influence the presence of species and 5) to propose measures for better management of the park. Data on wildlife presence signs and human activities were collected by five teams consisting of four people each. The distance sampling with line transects method, combined with reconnaissance walks (recces), and the occupancy method using camera traps were applied. A total of 448.1 km of transect out of 494 km planned and 1978 km of recces were completed. In addition, a specific study based on the retrospective method was conducted from August 2020 to March 2021 to estimate the average decay time of elephant dungs and great ape nests during the survey period. In total, 115 cameras were installed out of 123 stations planned (with one camera per station). A total effort of 17,296 camera-days, corresponding to an average duration of 175 [37-229] nights per station was completed. All collected data from both methods allowed the confirmation of 30 species of large and medium mammals. Analyses show that the elephant population has remained relatively stable since 2018 with an estimate of 1,134 [883-1,458] individuals distributed over almost the entire park. Data collected on great apes did not allow a reliable density estimate for both species, however, the spatial distribution of presence signs shows a stronger presence in the northern and eastern parts of the park. Elephants, blue duikers, yellow-backed duikers, Ogilby duikers, chimpanzees, gorillas, red river hogs and leopards have an estimated occupancy rate higher than 0.50, with relatively greater spatial occupancy in the dry season. The spatial distribution of elephants seems to be more influenced by factors related to human presence, such as the non-aggressive proximity of villages. Overall, altitude and herbaceous vegetations and wetlands are among the main factors that influence the spatial occupation of most species in MDNP. In addition, the results obtained show that there are very few signs of human activities, the majority of which result from former logging activities. Indeed, the potentially effective management measures as well as the rivers constituting natural barriers would have contributed to reduce the level of disturbance in the park. In order to maintain this context of low negative impacts from local populations, conservation efforts need to be increased in the landscape, and be mainly focused on resolving the current increasing human-wildlife conflicts. I developed an alternative approach to craft spatially integrated landscape management strategies that simultaneously meet the needs of villagers and elephants, which I call a landscape framework for human-elephant coexistence. To craft the coexistence framework, I investigated factors influencing CDIs in two villages at Lopé National Park, Gabon. In chapter 2, I used content analysis of semi-structured interviews with 46 villagers and conservation professionals to explore how interacting landscape processes lead to CDIs. This generated a conceptual framework characterizing how six broadscale CDI drivers set in motion five landscape change dynamics, which in turn lead to five generalizable problem types that directly contribute to CDIs in village areas. In chapter 3, I combined the stakeholder interviews with a mapped census of native fruit tree distribution along elephant trails in the two villages and nearby forest, and long-term fruit phenology data to assess CDI distribution in relation to seasonal availability of native fruits and domestic crops. The results indicate that neither crop nor native fruit availability, nor the interaction between them, is a definitive factor controlling CDIs. Instead, they suggest that the spatial and temporal distribution of elephant resources and human activities within mosaics of natural and managed landscapes combine to influence elephant foraging behaviors, which in turn set the stage for CDIs. In chapter 4, I reframed each of the five problem types into a coexistence strategy, and identified a toolbox of 59 actions to form the core of the landscape coexistence framework, and used chapter three results to inform how strategies could be applied at local extents. Two of the five strategies were targeted to fulfilling elephant needs, two toward villager needs, and one toward reducing the spatial overlap of elephant foraging and villager cropping activities.
