"abstractNote": "Studying changing attitudes toward marriage rights in the United States, we consider how sexual and gender socialization and changes in values and beliefs regarding homosexuality and marriage influence lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. We begin by presenting the cultural environment of policies, court decisions, and political maneuvers in response to the question of \"same-sex\" marriage. In this context, we examine fluctuations of public opinion polling from 1989 to 2009. These issues background our main focus, which is to comment on the emerging, positive research on the resiliency, strength, and future aspirations of LGBTQ youth. Such research was begun in the late-1980s with a significant communitybased, ethnographic study on LGBTQ youth in Chicago. Although similar studies are being done now, more ethnographic research is necessary to build a catalog of data focused on positive traits in response to a deficiency model used in most psychological research on LGBTQ youth. We end by suggesting ways that psychological anthropologists might fruitfully engage with policy studies and advocates through such research.",

The youth described these incidents as contributing to multiple placements and shaping why they experienced homelessness.",

Due to existing disparities in health outcomes, the consequences\nof this pandemic for LGBTQ+ individuals could be magnified in scope and severity. Gay, bisexual, and\nother men who have sex with men (MSM), particularly those who inhabit multiple minority identities (that\nis, racial/ethnic minorities, immigrants), are already at greater risk for suicide, HIV, and unemployment,\nand commonly face systematic, institutional discrimination in the form of criminalization and other hu-\nman rights violations. Vulnerable subgroups, such as unstably housed or informally employed LGBTQ+\nindividuals, may struggle to practice social distancing and prescribed sanitation measures. The recommen-\ndations presented here are data-driven and informed by a cross-sectional survey implemented by the free\ngay social networking app, Hornet, from April 16 to May 4, 2020. Hornet has over 25 million global users,\nand over 4,000 users from more than 150 countries completed this survey. The most responses were from\nBrazil, France, Russia, Turkey, Indonesia, and Mexico; the largest number of MSM responses were from\nBrazil, France, Mexico, Taiwan, and Russia.",

"abstractNote": "This article examines the debates around anarchist restriction that shaped the eventual passage of the Immigration Act of 1903 and argues that domestically oriented conceptions of national security are both challenged and constituted by transnational and international processes and currents. While discussions of transnational immigration control became important features of both scholarly discourse and popular debate in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 2001, these discussions were not new. Similar debates about immigration policy, security, and civil liberties shaped discussions between the mid-1880s and early 1900s, when an unprecedented wave of attacks against heads of state fed rumors of wide-ranging conspiracies, and reports of anarchist outrages in cities far and wide spread fear. Anarchist exclusion was far more than an example of a rising nativist tide raising all boats and excluding a widening spectrum of undesirable aliens. Such measures set the foundation for restriction based on political beliefs and associations that, over subsequent decades, would become critical to suppressing political dissent. Consequently, understanding how the fear of anarchist violence helped shape the contours of the domestic and diplomatic debates over anarchist restriction is critical as these old questions of transnational immigration control reemerge.",

"abstractNote": "Over the last few decades, migration has been constructed as a process that poses threats to the security, identity and wellbeing of European states and societies, and has been the target of policies aimed at reducing the risks posed by it. While securitised discourses, politics and policy responses are often articulated at the national level, the European Union has been the locus of both discourses and practices securitising migration in the European context. As a territorial political entity with defined external borders and political institutions generating binding legal and policy arrangements on behalf of its member states, the European Union has been particularly active in the field of migration control and asylum policies. These policies, as will be demonstrated in this chapter, are not only guided — although not exclusively — by a logic of securitisation, but have had the effect of producing and reproducing migrants as security threats.",

"abstractNote": "The racial typification of crime refers to the extent to which crime is represented as a Black phenomenon. Additionally, the ethnic typification of crime, where crime is represented as a Latino phenomenon, has received recent attention. Research on these concepts has found them to be predictive of punitive attitudes toward criminals. However as fairly new concepts, research has yet to clearly identify the factors that may contribute to the formation of these stereotypes. Using a national sample, this paper evaluates whether three potential factors influence attitudes that express the racial/ethnic typification of crime: symbolic or modern racism, media exposure and consumption, and inter-group contact. The results reveal that group contact is the only consistent predictor of both the racial and ethnic typification of crime; group contact is positively associated with the racial and ethnic typification of crime. Implications and directions for future research are discussed. Copies of dissertations may be obtained by addressing your request to ProQuest, 789 E. Eisenhower Parkway, P.O. "abstractNote": "This article develops thinking about ethnicity and difference and its relationship to contemporary immigration control and detention. I argue that current detention practices and debates about migration and border control can best be informed by a broader historical conception of ‘racism’, which reflects connections of power, subjugation and exploitations articulated through racism, to those associated with class, gender and religion. The influence on current immigration control policies of colonialism is not sufficiently reflected in the literature on race and immigration. I argue that the detention of foreign nationals can be explained to an extent by historical processes that encourage use of criminalization and racism to embed marginalization, the purest expression of which is physical removal through deportation. The article also seeks to better connect debates about race and marginalization within and between borders, which can in turn help to understand why prisons and detention centres are disproportionately filled with poorer, often non-white foreign nationals.",

"abstractNote": "Muslim Americans have been treated unfairly in many incidents after the unfortunate events of September 11th , 2001. They have been accused of the attack that was orchestrated by individuals who claim to be Muslims; however, in reality, Muslim Americans have suffered equally, just as other Americans. Many Muslims lost their lives in the attack of the Twin Towers, yet, the whole Muslim community was blamed for the terrorist attack.\nThe purpose of this study was four-fold. First, this study examined the perceptions of Muslin Americans toward racial profiling at airports after 911. Secondly, this study investigated the impact of Muslim men wearing a beard or typical Islamic clothing while flying and Muslim women covering their heads when they fly. Thirdly, this study explored the influence of racial profiling on fighting terrorism as perceived by Muslim Americans. Finally, this study ascertained the effect of the variables gender and ethnicity on the perceptions of Muslim Americans regarding racial profiling.\nA survey descriptive research design was used in this study. Two hundred twenty-six (226) Muslim Americans were selected to participants in the study. A locally devised questionnaire entitled \"Racial Profiling at Airports\" was used to collect the data. Finally, data was treated through the application of the Chi Square Goodness-of-fit and the One-Way Analysis of Variance.\nThe following findings were observed from the results of this study: (1) Muslim Americans were statistically more likely to feel that they are racial profiled at airports after 911; (2) Muslim American males were not statistically more likely to wear a beard or typical Islamic clothing when flying; (3) Muslim American women were statistically more likely to cover their heads when flying; (4) Muslim Americans were statistically more likely to perceive racial profiling as being an important mechanism in fighting terrorism; (5) The perceptions of Muslim Americans regarding racial profiling were not significantly affected by their gender; and (6) Muslim Americans' Islamic ethnic background did not produce a significant effect on their perceptions toward racial profiling.",

"abstractNote": "We assessed the prevalence of perceived abuse and discrimination among Arab American adults after September 11, 2001, and associations between abuse or discrimination and psychological distress, level of happiness, and health status. We gathered data from a face-to-face survey administered in 2003 to a representative, population-based sample of Arab American adults residing in the greater Detroit area. Overall, 25% of the respondents reported post-September 11 personal or familial abuse, and 15% reported that they personally had a bad experience related to their ethnicity, with higher rates among Muslims than Christians. After adjustment for socioeconomic and demographic factors, perceived post-September 11 abuse was associated with higher levels of psychological distress, lower levels of happiness, and worse health status. Personal bad experiences related to ethnicity were associated with increased psychological distress and reduced happiness. Perceptions of not being respected within US society and greater reported effects of September 11 with respect to personal security and safety were associated with higher levels of psychological distress. Perceived post-September 11 abuse and discrimination were associated with increased psychological distress, reduced levels of happiness, and worse health status in our sample. Community-based, culturally sensitive partnerships should be established to assess and meet the health needs of Arab Americans.",

Using a random sample of White adults from Pennsylvania, we studied whether perceptions on the discriminatory nature of racial profiling, and the perceived effectiveness of this practice in airports, retail settings, and traffic stops, form two distinct latent measures. We found that perceptions of racial profiling as discriminatory are general across these multiple contexts; the same was found to be true for perceptions of effectiveness as well. These latent measures also had different correlates by age and gender. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]",
