Although many authors assert that\ncommunities of practice create organizational\nvalue, there has been relatively little systematic\nstudy of the linkage between community\noutcomes and the underlying social mechanisms\nthat are at work. To build an understanding\nof how communities of practice create\norganizational value, we suggest thinking of a\ncommunity as an engine for the development of\nsocial capital. We argue that the social capital\nresident in communities of practice leads to\nbehavioral changes, which in turn positively\ninfluence business performance. We identify four\nspecific performance outcomes associated with\nthe communities of practice we studied and link\nthese outcomes to the basic dimensions of social\ncapital. These dimensions include connections\namong practitioners who may or may not be co-\nlocated, relationships that build a sense of trust\nand mutual obligation, and a common language\nand context that can be shared by community\nmembers.
