"abstractNote": "The Europeans who conquered the Americas in the early modern era lived in a remarkably violent world. Nowhere was this more true than in the world of sports, which often saw mortal combat between humans, blood sports between man and animals, and collective contests where maiming was the rule. Against this background, the Puritan reformers of England and New England formulated a contrasting set of sporting ideals remarkably consistent with the modern amateur and Olympic commitment to athletes who embody \"a sound mind in a healthy body.\" Puritan support of certain types of sports is relatively little known because the Puritans famously opposed James Ts Book of Sports (1616). They did so not out of hostility to physical recreation, however, but out of support for the principle of Sabbatarianism, and Puritans — both in England and New England — enjoyed a number of sports that involved what modern peoples would call track and field events, along with other forms of sport. Although the Cotswold Games, which began in England in 1612 and which the Puritans vehemently opposed as sinful and immoral, are considered by many to have marked the beginning of the modern Olympic tradition's revival, the Puritan sporting ethic may be just as important as an early modern precursor. "abstractNote": "This research study analyzes the sociocultural significance of the traditional sportive games in Tunisia. It was developped with the aid of classic sociology instruments: participant observation, interviews, field notes, audivisual documents and bibliographic sources. Traditional games are surely one of most representative ludic traditions in Tunisia. As years went by, the body traditional games expressed a range of themes among the North-africain population, privileges, passions, prohibitions, rewards, punishments, forgetfulness, remembrance, social-acknowledgments… Before the French colonization, the traditional games were the most popular in Tunisia, among men and women, old and young people, rich and poor men, politicians and peasants. These games, though, were narrowly conditioned by other cultural manifestations: religion let them become the only possible distraction during the Easter period, when other entertaining centres were closed, the demands of work on, the peasantry in the country reduced the ludic practice in winter when peasants and their children worked all days. The French colonization that ruled Tunisia from 1881 to 1956 banned these games, which then became completely forgotten. With the arrival on the independence, the traditional games were revived by old people but, this time, influenced by the acculturization of sports. The ludic practices are the main attraction in most villages' summer festival, in which they organize wedding and harvest ceremonies, where people of différent ages - males and females - meet and practice the country horse or foot-races, rifle-shooting and target-firing are closely related to a rural civilization. The social organization and symbolic signification of the traditional games contribute to reinforce a cultural community marked by family, collectivity and religious obligations. All these activities show the importance of legends and superstitions. These practices are various which permit to charcterize the traditional sociability and to understand the break off set up by the « moderninzing process » of sports. This study can be read and analyzed as a valid ethnographical parameter representative of the Tunisian society about these ludic practices. (English)",

"abstractNote": "This article argues that the early modern period in Europe from c. 1450 to 1850 should be not seen merely as an independent era in the history of sport but rather as the formative period of modern sports. This is due to the high levels of institutionalization and standardization sports underwent in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and England among other countries. In arguing this point, the article examines a number of topical examples: the codification of sports in rule books; the role of sports in educational programmes and humanist schools; sports architecture such as ball houses and pall malls; sporting goods such as palloni and racchette and their pan-European trade; the sports enthusiasm of early modern princes; the professionalization of sports through coaches, referees, professional athletes, competitions and prizes, and the beginnings of sports reporting; and pre-Coubertinian attempts at reviving the classical Olympic Games such as the Cotswold Games of Robert Dover from the early seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries.",

Central to this discussion is the concept of national sports with evidence being taken from various genres of sports-related literature and from a variety of nations. Just as the landscape provides the context in which national sports are played and watched, it is the playing and watching of these sports which in turn give the landscape added meaning As a consequence of this, the nation, sport and landscape come to be recognised as interconnected texts which taken as whole offer significant insights into the primordial formation of national identities.",

"abstractNote": "In this article, we examine philosophy of sport as a field of study in Japan, its history, characteristics, and future prospects, as part of a contribution to the international development of the discipline of sport philosophy. The Japan Society for the Philosophy of Sport and Physical Education has been holding an annual sport philosophy conference every year since its inception in 1978. Nevertheless, the trends of sport philosophy in Japan have not been conveyed abroad. The language barrier between Japanese and English as an international communication tool makes it difficult to spread our work on the philosophy of sport throughout the world. The question arises as to whether the philosophy of sport in Japan has the same trends as those in the Western countries. Is it reasonable to assume that it has different aspects and interests than philosophy of sport in English-speaking countries? We will also try to address these questions for our audience",

Western philosophy's famous “why” questions and free thinking were not part of Chinese philosophy. Acceptance was the rule and Confucius is known to be the source for this philosophy. The 20th century brought changes both in thinking generally as well as how sports were perceived. The main reasons for this were the opening to the west and improving economic situations for the general population. This led to research in the field of sport philosophy on academic levels both in Taiwan and China. This article tries to put the achievements in this field in on the map.",

"abstractNote": "Every aspect of the sporting world has exploded in the years since 1945. Player salaries, the cost of fielding a team, the hype surrounding games, the number of cameras on the sidelines, the corporate sponsorships, the level of drug use, the number of women and African Americans participating, the global reach of games: all of these have contributed to a shift in the way Americans perceive the meaning of sports. More Than Just a Game traces these complex developments over the past sixty years. This book examines major sports, both professional and intercollegiate, from baseball, football, and basketball to golf, tennis, stock car racing, and extreme sports. It also covers the politics and social ramifications of the Olympic games and the growing appetite for recreational sports. How did the National Basketball Association go from a podunk regional league to an international powerhouse? How does Lance Armstrong's career illustrate some of the major trends in sports in the last twenty years? Why did the 1973 tennis \"Battle of the Sexes\" between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs matter? In answering these questions, Kathryn Jay shows how sports have helped shape racial, gender, national, and class identities. She also shows how athletes have been packaged as consumer products to be bought and sold. Nevertheless, transcendent moments occur regularly, and this book is replete with them. More Than Just a Game argues that the need to win has created a fascinating duality. On the one hand, Americans celebrate athletes as national heroes and believe sports encourage good citizenship and morality. On the other hand, the problems created by such a powerful emphasis on winning-cheating scandals, drug use, violent behavior, and an emphasis on financial gain-have been bemoaned as representing the decline of the nation itself. In the United States, sports have rarely been just fun and games.",

"abstractNote": "The United States prides itself on many things, but few are more prominent and visible than success at a sport, either locally, nationally, or internationally. Local sports are often a unifying factor in communities, and instances of success are the stuff of both fact and fiction. The 2001 Little League World Series highlighted the Rolando Paulino team and its largely immigrant players from a community that lionized them; later, the team was smeared by scandal. High school football in Texas or Ohio is often something that an entire community embraces. The movie Hoosiers was a fictionalized account of the success of a school in Milan. Indiana, in the 1954 Indiana State High School Basketball Tournament. These are readily recognized, but not unusual, examples of the prominent role that sports plays in local communities. National college football rankings spur alumni to support their alma maters; few school events provide such positive, or sometimes negative, publicity and stimulate such a flow of dollars as a highly successful football or basketball team. The most recognizable face in the world is that of basketball player Michael Jordan. The study of sports in American history is the story of great American themes--racism, sexism, responses to war, demagoguery, sudden economic success, immigration, urban growth, community life, advances in transportation, media hype, and so forth.",
