            "abstractNote": "Two fundamental trends in world agriculture are examined and compared in terms of their potential contribution to the future global food system. On the one hand, multinational corporations with abundant capital and advanced technology resources engage in large-scale commercial production. On the other, smallholder agriculture is based on family household labor, local knowledge and community agrarian culture and seeks to supply local and regional markets, although smallholder export is increasingly prevalent. Smallholders are seen as a global agrarian phenomenon that exhibits regularities across widely different social and ecological situations. Though households are the basic unit of production and consumption, cooperatives and similar associations are keys to smallholder participation in the creation of food security and in the global integration of agricultural markets. Corporate agriculture is increasingly mobile and seeks to produce, or to induce smallholders to produce, cheap standardized commodities for industrial food processing. Flexible investment by corporations results in a global shifting agriculture that is driven by the underlying instability of high-input industrial farming. Smallholder households do not behave like capitalist firms, but embody a wider set of values focused on place, community and family.Smallholders, by providing hand crafted, high-quality agricultural products and appealing to contemporary consumers who value healthy, natural food associated with the nostalgia of the rural village and ecologically friendly technology, may be able to capture a significant share of the global food market.",
