Hajio\nV\n, Martin McKee\nAbstract\nBackground\n—The Roma people origi-\nnated in northern India and have been\nknown in Europe for nearly a thousand\nyears. For much of that time they have\nbeen the subjects of discrimination and\noppression, culminating in the extermina-\ntion of half a million Roma in the Nazi\ndeath camps. While it is widely believed\nthat the health of Roma people is often\npoorer than the majority population,\nthese inequalities remain largely unre-\nsearched.\nMethods\n—Published literature on the\nhealth of the Roma people was identified\nusing Medline. Opinion pieces were ex-\ncluded, as were papers relating to anthro-\npometry and to genetic markers. The\nresultant papers were analysed by country\nof study and by disease type or care group.\nResults\n—Some 70% of papers identified\nrelated to just three countries; Spain and\nthe Czech and Slovak Republics. Much lit-\nerature concentrates upon communicable\ndisease or reproductive health. The lim-\nited evidence suggests increased morbid-\nity from non-communicable disease, but\nthere is little published on this topic. Evi-\ndence on health care, though fragmentary,\nsuggests poorer access to health services\nand uptake of preventative care.\nDiscussion\n—Published research on the\nhealth needs of the Roma population is\nsparse. The topics that have received\nattention suggest a focus on concepts of\ncontagion or social Darwinism, indicating\na greater concern with the health needs of\nthe majority populations with which they\nlive. There is a need for both further\nresearch into the health of Roma people;\nwith particular emphasis on non-\ncommunicable disease; and also for inter-\nventions that improve Roma health.
