Washington, USA, during 1994 to 1995. Contaminant concentrations, reproductive success, and biomagnification factors were determined and effects of residue levels were measured by H4IIE rat hepatoma bioassays. Mean residue concentrations in heron eggs and prey items were generally low. However, elevated concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected in eggs andprey from Ross Island on the Willamette River. Biomagnification factors varied among sites. Sites were not significantly different in H4IIE tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents (TCDD-EQs), although the TCDD-EQ for Karlson Island was 9 to 20 times greater than that of any other site. Large differences existed between toxic equivalents calculated from egg residue concentrations and TCDD-EQs, which indicated nonadditive interactions among the compounds. Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents and nest failure were positively correlated with TCDDconcentration. Fledging and reproductive rates were similar to thosedetermined for healthy heron populations, however, indicating that any adverse effects were occurring at the individual level and not at the colony level. Our results support the use of great blue herons asa biomonitor for contamination in aquatic ecosystems. This article investigates water stakeholders’ perceptions of local waters and their water-related behaviors within the Willamette watershed of western Oregon. I conducted 25 interviews with key users of the Willamette watershed's water supply. My analyses of these data suggest that stakeholders perceive water as a scarce resource. In addition, the participants indicated strong attachments to local water bodies but demonstrated little incentive in making personal sacrifices to safeguard these “scarce” water supplies. Given that equitable water distribution is a present and growing concern, this case study contributes to a body of knowledge that legitimizes direct experience in shaping resource management, as well main driver–agriculture–is compelling. We present a mathematical model of land use dynamics based on the world food equation that explains historical trends in global land use on the millennial scale. The model predicts that a global forest transition only occurs under a small and very specific range of parameter values (and hence seems unlikely) but if it does occur, it would have to occur within the next 70 years. In our baseline scenario, global forest cover continues to decline until it stabilizes within the next two centuries at 22% of global land cover, and wild pasture at 1.4%. Under other scenarios the model predicts unanticipated dynamics wherein a forest transition may relapse, heralding a second era of deforestation; this brings into question national-level forest transitions observed in recent decades, and suggests we need to expand our lexicon of possibilities beyond the simple “forest transition/no forest transition” dichotomy. This study is an in-depth analysis of spatial and temporal land-use change in a rural mountain area for the data period 1965-2010. It concerns a rural area with partially mountainous characteristics and a high prevalence of forest land, in which both the processes of peri-urbanisation and a common land management system involving the state and the community can be observed. Supported by a collection of five periods of image analysis (the 1965, 1974, 1983, 1995, and 2010 maps), the transformation indicators were analysed in terms of the stability grade (SG), which expresses the total proportion of the landscape that has not experienced any transition, the rate of forest transformation (FS) and artificialisation processes (AS). In the area as a whole, the spatial and temporal transitions involve a significant increase in urban areas with a discontinuous fabric, a reduction in agricultural areas, and significant routing of forest occupation with typology and pattern transition. In the common lands, the major transformations occur between forests and semi-natural areas, with a general temporal increase in broad-leaved forest and degraded forest areas and a decrease in agricultural and agro-forestry areas, showing improvements to forest land through the introduction of new species and forest maintenance reflected in smaller subdivisions of patterns of land use. The methods enabled four periods to be identified revealing a distinctive evolution in land use, in which urban consolidation is present consistently, together with rotation of the forest typology - involving forest degradation, gains from agro-forest land or sparsely vegetated areas and the appearance of burnt areas. The results highlight the importance of public policies in the dynamics of land-use change, either in the form of planning or regulatory instruments closely linked to local communities and based on agriculture and forest resources.
