"abstractNote": "We present two protocols for ad hoc wireless networks, one for media access control, the other for power control. For the media access control problem we present a protocol called SEEDEX, which does not explicitly make reservations for packets yet allows scheduling to minimize conflicts. The idea is to use known finite state machines at nodes which are driven by pseudo-random number generators. The seeds of these pseudo-random number generators are exchanged between nodes in a two hop neighborhood. For the power control problem we first provide a framework for conceptualizing the problem. This leads us to propose a network layer approach to power control which consists of finding the least common network wide power level at which all nodes are connected. This can be shown to maximize the throughput traffic carrying capacity of the network. We then propose a feedback algorithm COMPOW which tunes to this minimum power level adaptively. We also propose a software architecture for integrating this into the OSI protocol stack",

The epistemological origins of these theories are situated within the differing social and personal contexts that affected their development. Those MSD assumptions that serve as background to this comparison are specified, and major hypotheses concerning the social ecology of microeffects processes are discussed, particularly as they pertain to public opinion concerns. Following this elaboration of MSD theory, basic differences between MSD and U&G conceptions of the audience, interpersonal networks, the media system, and the nature of media power are addressed. I conclude with a brief comment on the implications of the Internet for theorizing micro media effects.",

"abstractNote": "In this article, I examine self-formation through the activity of organic farming in a self-managing community. How do producing and consuming subjects organize their selves around the false natural object' (Veyne, 1997) that is organic? To inform this ethnographic account of self-formation, I draw on the work of Michel Foucault. A study is made of technologies of the self in the contemporary setting of a self-managing organic farming community without compromising the self-forming, self-regulating activity of the ethical subject presented by Foucault in his studies of Antiquity. I contend that the self is formed by the subject as a thinking and acting being through the modes of subjectivation and objectivation (Foucault, 2000a). The article contributes empirical support to theoretical studies that consider how Foucault's texts account for the intervention of human subjects alongside sociological factors when exploring organizational issues (Bardon and Josserand, 2011; McKinlay and Pezet, 2010). It is recommended that a wider range of responses could be opened up in Foucault-inspired studies at other organizational sites, including the workplace, by exploring the self-formation of the subject as a starting point for understanding the importance of the individual alongside sociological factors.",

"abstractNote": "Theory and observations are used to argue that JIT/TQC regimes both create and demand systems of surveillance which improve on those of previous factory regimes by instilling discipline and thereby enhancing central control. For its theoretical inspiration this paper draws upon the work of Michel Foucault, especially his conception of Power/Knowledge as articulated in his book Discipline and Punish. This theoretical framework is extended to provide a means of analysis of the mechanisms of surveillance and control that operate in the contemporary work place. While there is a sense in which tactical responsibility is delegated in an organisation practising JIT/TQM, strategic control is simultaneously centralised - a form of devolutionism. Drawing on the work of Foucault we will argue that the JIT/TQM approach is both enabled and enhanced by the operation of two complementary disciplinary forces. The first of these is the discipline which derives from the scrutiny of one's peers in a manufacturing cell, quality circle, etc. - a horizontal process which is supported by the organisational structure associated with JIT/TQM. The second and key disciplinary force is that which derives from the use of increasingly powerful management information systems which provide extensive shop floor surveillance - a vertical process which provides an over-arching controlling mechanism. We demonstrate that the surveillance systems integral to JIT/TQM are deliberately designed such that discipline is established in a most efficient manner and the exercise of minute control is possible with a minimum of supervisors. The desired effect of harnessing these dual forces is to miniraise negative divergences from expected behaviour and management defined norms whilst identifying positive divergencies and maximising their creative potential.",

Indeed, much recent academic work has tried to deal with the challenge of facilitating compliance with planning regulations. However, this work has not fully understood the ways in which power is used within the planning system to regulate and control individual behavior. This paper is different—it approaches planning regulation through a Foucaultian lens to focus critical attention on how spaces become governable for planning purposes. It identifies how behavioural norms are established, how citizens become active in their own surveillance and policing, and documents the ways in which public bodies publicise acts of punishment to create compliant subjects.",

"abstractNote": "While much contemporary organizational research has highlighted how surveillance and self-surveillance are dominant modes of attempting subjective control in organizations, in this article we consider whether 'being seen' harbours the potential to also engender an ethics that motivates care for self and other. This ethics resides in an 'undecided space' - one where individual conduct and subjectivity are not decided by surveillance-based discipline but performed by active subjects in interaction with each other in relation to that discipline. W draw on fieldwork conducted in the spinal unit of a major hospital to explore and demonstrate the instability of the association between discipline and surveillance in organizational life. The article provides an account of how a video-based intervention in the hospital led to alternative conducts and outcomes. We consider examples of in situ practice that show clinicians being dynamically attuned to one another in response to the video study. The contribution of the article is to demonstrate and illustrate how emergent subjectivity and interaction can result from such video 'surveillance'. We conclude that 'being seen' can intensify mutual attentiveness to the point where interaction affords an ethic of care for self and other.",

"abstractNote": "Midwives in New Zealand achieved professional autonomy in 1990 with an amendment to the Nurses Act 1977. Predicated on a natural approach to childbirth it was envisaged that midwifery would counter the trend of increasing medicalisation of childbirth. Some 20 years later, we continue to be concerned by increasing rates of intervention in childbirth including caesarean section operations. Midwifery practice is no longer supervised in a hierarchical arrangement with the obstetrician at its peak, however, we suggest that new and more subtle disciplinary mechanisms have come to the fore post-1990. Drawing on Foucault's concepts of the medical gaze' and the panopticon' we describe the ways in which midwifery practice (and through them the bodies of childbearing women) continues to be disciplined to conform to obstetric norms.",

"abstractNote": "Despite growing political and academic interest in increases in surveillance brought about by digital technology, users of these technologies themselves appear to remain relatively unconcerned with surveillance, accepting the trade-off of greater usability for decreased control. This article interrogates the contradiction between people's professed opinions and their actual behaviours, and the contradiction between public and academic discourse and people's everyday disregard. It does so by comparing a theoretical model currently in common use for analysing surveillance, focused around a Deleuzian conception of 'control society', with users' own perceptions about the relative harm of surveillance, using data drawn from a qualitative study. In this enterprise, the study seeks to advance David Lyon's call to understand whether and how users actually consent to surveillance in their everyday lives. The study finds two main points of difference and one point of commonality between control society analyses of surveillance and users' own perceptions and experiences of being surveilled. Whereas a control society analysis points to the increasingly simulated quality of much of the data being generated about 'dividuals', users themselves hold onto notions about the truth and reliability of that information. Whereas a control society analysis conceptualizes surveillance in terms of postmodern forms of control which are dispersed, slippery and leak into everyday practice, users profess an ability to target surveillance attempts within specific spaces and attached to particular information domains. Control society analyses and user experiences of surveillance do converge, however, around the third tenet emerging from this scholarship: the notion of participatory surveillance, and how consent is currently operationalized.",

"abstractNote": "relationalenclosed‘mean world’Network literaciesDead mediaCommons knowledge In this paper, three features of the Internet/new media that have developed over the last decade are discussed: the relational Internet, the enclosed Internet, and the ‘mean world’ Internet. These features correspond to the three interrelated elements of new media infrastructure: the practices in which people engage to interact and share information and meaning; the tools, devices, or artifacts that people create and use in order to do so; and the social arrangements or institutional forms that develop out of and around those practices and tools. Together, the three features have had an important influence on the ways that new media are understood and used and have helped shift popular discourses and the study of new media from an emphasis on possibility, novelty, adaptability, and openness toward greater preoccupations with risk, conflict, vulnerability, routinization, stability, and control. Given these conditions, the author proposes that three problem areas – again corresponding to practices, tools, and social arrangements – may be important directions for new media studies over the ‘next decade in Internet time’. Network literacies and pedagogies that prepare individuals to be full and effective participants in society, politics, and culture must be developed and implemented. Dead media may pose increasing challenges to sustainable cultural heritage as well as to ever more intrusive regimes of total surveillance and capture of personal information, enabling a ‘right to be forgotten’. Commons knowledge projects may challenge and even reconfigure the foundations of institutional authority, expertise, legitimacy, and power.",

"abstractNote": "This article suggests that it is timely to revitalise studies in the tradition of the political economy of media and communications in order to develop a critical and comprehensive analysis of the social and economic dynamics of the production and consumption of new media. Specifically, a coupling of research on mediated communication and on highly situated communities of practice with some strands of research in political economy could shed new light on the way changing power relationships are informing the development and application of new media products and services. There are precedents for this approach in studies of the older media and signs of a greater receptivity to such an approach in some studies of Internet developments and the open source software movement.",
