"abstractNote": "The practical undercurrent to zombie apocalypse novels appears in their engagement with the role and form of infrastructure and planning in everyday life after the apocalypse. Max Brooks’s World War Z, Mira Grant’s Newsflesh trilogy, and Colson Whitehead’s Zone One imagine not just fighting the zombie horde, but also rebuilding after the zombie apocalypse. For these novels, zombie détente is a matter of public works. These zombie apocalypses appeal to current anxieties about the danger the crumbling infrastructure poses to the US getting about its everyday business, a danger that precludes the collective action necessary to confront social injustices. These zombie apocalypses articulate concerns about infrastructure in the US, and in the process highlight how important transport systems continue to be for maintaining society. The destruction, decay, and refitting of the infrastructure presents the emergent problems to address before reaching the point of getting organized to address problems collectively.",

"abstractNote": "This paper will examine the representation of zombie apocalypse in Zone One (2011) by Colson Whitehead and Severance (2018) by Ling Ma. Whitehead and Ma both situate their narratives in New York City, a contested setting oscillating between utopian possibilities of progress and dystopian realities of alienation. The novels reveal the zombifying impact of capitalism that permeates local and global networks of exploitation, and perpetuates what Judith Butler identifies as precariousness and precarity of life. The representation of New York as a metonymic urban space, which displays the arrested development of global capitalism through a zombie apocalypse, renders Zone One and Severance critically relevant today. Whitehead and Ma articulate the catastrophic consequences of uneven development as well as the reader’s ontological proximity to the liminal category of zombies. I argue that the authors’ narrative choice of total collapse over survival in and of New York, albeit the discursive privilege of urban growth, is a powerful gesture of “creative destruction” toward unsettling, if not breaking, the detrimental cycles of capitalist repetition. Whitehead and Ma reflect the anxiety of the contemporary moment by subverting problematic assumptions about cityscapes and civilization with their innovative combination of urban fiction, zombie tropes, and apocalyptic discourse.",

"abstractNote": "This article builds on settler and domestic colonial histories and theories to advance our understanding of urban changes in segregated, disinvested, U.S. Rust Belt cities. While many major cities have rebounded in population and experienced gentrification since the mid-twentieth century, many Rust Belt cities have continued to decline. The resulting conditions call for new theories to describe their changes, trajectories, and the impacts for majority poor Black populations. We construct a Binocular Colonial Lens: an analytic framework that superimposes shared conceptual descriptions and theoretical explanations of settler and domestic colonialisms. With this lens, we can elucidate the practices of erasure that are deployed throughout colonized communities and focus them on phenomena associated with urban decline and revitalization. While some urban scholarship has used metaphors and language of settler colonialism to describe gentrification, most of these works at best reflect the salience of settler ideology, and at worst reinforce Indigenous erasure. Foregrounding shared conditions of colonization and conquest in the United States, we train this Binocular Colonial Lens on Detroit, which reveals myriad urban processes like ghettoization, urban renewal, suburbanization, and gentrification as ongoing colonization, wherein domestically colonized populations are subject to numerous forms of erasure at the behest of the settler state and toward the advancement of settler society. This lens advances urban theory by expanding the depth of our analyses of urban changes, and scaffolds connections with other axes of racialized inequality by revealing shared tools of erasure operative in, for example, mass incarceration and environmental injustices.",

"abstractNote": "In recent years, various critics have noted how contemporary American writers are turning to popular genre forms in their work. However, few have adequately addressed how this turn affects the story of literary history. Through close readings of Jennifer Egan’s metafictional gothic novel, The Keep, and Colson Whitehead’s post-apocalyptic zombie horror novel, Zone One, this article argues that this recent trend reflects a longer process I am calling genrefication. I begin by analysing how The Keep updates the gothic to speak to contemporary concerns, specifically digital communications technology. Egan’s text also thematises how the formal limits of genres enable affective experiences for the reader. It then turns to Whitehead’s contrasting depiction of genre, one which complicates Egan’s ideas somewhat. Drawing on the work of John Fiske, I contend that Zone One shows how popular forms develop in relation to power structures, and how the recent turn to genre can be seen as what Fiske calls a ‘micropolitics’ of resistance. Through readings of these two texts, I argue that genrefication not only accounts for the recent turn to popular genres but also serves as a productive framework to discuss the gradual encroachment of genre into literary criticism.",

"abstractNote": "Cognizant of the instrumental role infrastructure plays in the underpinning of international competitiveness, Moldova's public custodians have been actively marshalling resources and investment into the augmentation of\ncritical infrastructure components, particularly in the spheres of transportation and telecommunications. This\nempirical inquiry assumes a bifocal purpose: firstly, to delineate the prevailing contours of Moldova's\ninternational competitiveness, along with the attendant challenges; and secondly, to proffer a comprehensive assessment of the efficacy of the government's provisioning of infrastructure and ancillary services in catalyzing heightened competitiveness among commercial entities while expediting their internationalization endeavours.\nThe methodological approach adopted for this study seamlessly interweaves quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, harnessing an amalgamation of national and international statistical data, scholarly research, official publications, and insights culled from a comprehensive business survey conducted in the year 2022. Preliminary findings emanating from this research endeavour cast light upon the Republic of Moldova's modest progress in its pursuit of heightened international competitiveness, underscoring concurrent\ngovernmental efforts to assist commercial enterprises in surmounting critical challenges that have impeded strides in productivity augmentation, competitive acumen, and crisis resilience.",

"abstractNote": "A review is made of the current state of agriculture, emphasising issues of soil erosion and dependence on fossil fuels, in regard to achieving food security for a relentlessly enlarging global population. Soil has been described as “the fragile, living skin of the Earth”, and yet both its aliveness and fragility have all too often been ignored in the expansion of agriculture across the face of the globe. Since it is a pivotal component in a global nexus of soil-water-air-energy, how we treat the soil can impact massively on climate change – with either beneficial or detrimental consequences, depending on whether the soil is preserved or degraded. Regenerative agriculture has at its core the intention to improve the health of soil or to restore highly degraded soil, which symbiotically enhances the quality of water, vegetation and land-productivity. By using methods of regenerative agriculture, it is possible not only to increase the amount of soil organic carbon (SOC) in existing soils, but to build new soil. This has the effect of drawing down carbon from the atmosphere, while simultaneously improving soil structure and soil health, soil fertility and crop yields, water retention and aquifer recharge – thus ameliorating both flooding and drought, and also the erosion of further soil, since runoff is reduced. Since food production on a more local scale is found to preserve the soil and its quality, urban food production should be seen as a significant potential contributor to regenerative agriculture in the future, so long as the methods employed are themselves ‘regenerative’. If localisation is to become a dominant strategy for dealing with a vastly reduced use of fossil fuels, and preserving soil quality – with increased food production in towns and cities – it will be necessary to incorporate integrated (‘systems’) design approaches such as permaculture and the circular economy (which minimise and repurpose ‘waste’) within the existing urban infrastructure. In addition to growing food in urban space, such actions as draught-proofing and thermally insulating existing building stock, and living/working on a more local scale, would serve well to cut our overall energy consumption. In order to curb our use of fossil fuels, methods for reducing overall energy use must be considered at least equally important to expanding low-carbon energy production. In synopsis, it is clear that only by moving from the current linear, ‘take, make, dispose (waste-creation)’ model for resource-consumption, to the systemic, circular alternative of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle, regenerate’, are we likely to meet demands for future generations.",

Colson Whitehead’s acclaimed zombie novel Zone One (2011) both grounds itself in and updates the post-apocalyptic genre. This article explores how Whitehead employs the zombie trope to critique excessive corporate influence on governmental, legal, and social structures. Through a close reading of the novel and an examination of contemporaneous journalistic accounts, I argue that Whitehead draws from three real-world “apocalypses” – the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the financial crisis, and accelerating gentrification – to demonstrate the insidious effects of excessive corporate influence. On Whitehead’s account, corporations undermine governmental legitimacy, commodify human values and attributes, and homogenize American neighborhoods.",
