"abstractNote": "This essay explores strategies for teaching texts that are critical of an untempered pursuit of wealth to business students, although many of these students have chosen their course of study based on their internalization and privileging of capitalist discourse. Karl Marx's 'Estranged Labour,' Charles Dickens's Hard Times, and the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech by Muhammad Yunus can be used in the classroom to encourage students to broaden their understanding of wealth, power, and class and to suggest that they, in their professional lives, may be agents of social change. Pedagogical strategies employed in this first-year course include giving students responsibility for the direction of class discussions, so that their specific interests and agendas receive attention, and requiring that students personalize these texts that may seem distant to them by exploring their own experiences in the world of work and commerce in the context of the readings. By the end of the semester, the binary structure of their worldview has been challenged and, ideally, complicated.",

"abstractNote": "‘Feeling Dickensian feeling' asks why modern literary criticism, notably that inflected by new historicism, is so intent on stripping sentimentalism of its sentimental feeling. The essay suggests that the reader encounters experiential problems when feelings are separated from critical practice and also outlines the specific issues at stake when critics translate immaterial subjects, like feeling or belief, into external, material events. Thus Dickensian sentiment is often critically analysed for its historical content despite the emotional pleasure many readers purport to enjoy in experiencing its expression. I suggest that Dickens's ‘A Christmas Carol' (1842) embodies some of these tensions by presenting Ebenezer Scrooge as a cautionary figure who begins by quantifying the world and ends by feeling it. I also build on modernity's aversion to feeling through the work of Wendy Wheeler and Teresa Brennan to forward a model of reading for feeling. This model, I argue, works through a sense-based form of close reading that privileges specificity and particularity in the reading process, both of words and sentences but also of readers' responses.",

"abstractNote": "\"Sophisticated readers of A Christmas Carol, moved though they may be by the dramatic reformation of Scrooge, are frequently inclined to question the psychological validity of the old man's change of heart. Far from being a sign of the story's inadequacy, however, this divided reaction is the key to its effectiveness. Dickens' chief target in A Christmas Carol is Scrooge's nineteenth-century rationalism, and the reader's skepticism about the old man's moral and spiritual recovery is an exact analogue of that rationalism. What the reader's delight, in the face of his skepticism, suggests, therefore, is that there is a level of the story on which Scrooge's regeneration is entirely authentic; that if A Christmas Carol is less than convincing as a psychological case history of an elderly neurotic temporarily reformed by Christmas sentimentality, it is certainly a success as the metaphysical study of a human being's rediscovery of his own innocence.\"\n\n(Summary from site)",
