The nature and magnitude of collaboration vary from one discipline to another, and depend upon such factors as the nature of the research problem, the research environ ment, and demographic factors. Earlier studies have shown a high degree of correlation between collaboration and research productivity, and between collaboration and financial support for research. The extent of collaboration cannot be easily determined by traditional methods of survey and observation. Bibliometric methods offer a convenient and non-reactive tool for studying collaboration in research. In this paper, several types of collaboration have been identified, and earlier research on collaboration has been reviewed. To conduct this research, researchers searched Scopus database for articles published between 2006 and 2020, as of March 2021 which brought out a set of 2643 publications. MS-Excel, R-programming language and VosViewer were used to analysis the collected data. The significant increase of publications in DH over last six years (2015-2020) is observed. The annual percentage of growth rate is 34.91. It is found that the average authors per document are 1.8 and the collaborative index is 2.53 in this study. USA, UK and Germany emerged as the major research contributor. In the co-occurrence network of keywords, the value of clustering coefficient is 0.072. This study gives a better knowledge of collaborative processes in the digital humanities. Bibliometric analysis of publishing patterns in four departments in the humanities shows significant differences in the rate of coauthorship by type of publication, by department, and by career phase. The data also show that coauthored research has become more common over time. Rather than a uniform culture, there is notable variation in collaborative practices between departments. The work is based on an exhaustive search in databases—particularly those in library and information science—and on citation chaining from papers on citation analysis. The results confirm that use of this technique in the humanities is limited, and although there was some growth in the 1970s and 1980s, it has stagnated in the past 2 decades. Most of the work has been done by research staff, but almost one third involves library staff, and 15% has been done by students. The study also showed that less than one fourth of the works used a citation database such as the\n A\n rts &\n H\n umanities\n C\n itation\n I\n ndex and that 21% of the works were in publications other than library and information science journals. Information is illustrated by some new facts concerning The BKCI's use in bibliometrics, coverage analysis, and a series of idiosyncrasies worthy of further discussion. The BKCI was launched primarily to assist researchers identify useful and relevant research that was previously invisible to them, owing to the lack of significant book content in citation indexes such as the Web of Science. So far, the content of 33,000 books has been added to the desktops of the global research community, the majority in the arts, humanities, and social sciences fields. Initial analyses of the data from The BKCI have indicated that The BKCI, in its current version, should not be used for bibliometric or evaluative purposes. The most significant limitations to this potential application are the high share of publications without address information, the inflation of publication counts, the lack of cumulative citation counts from different hierarchical levels, and inconsistency in citation counts between the cited reference search and the book citation index. However, The BKCI is a first step toward creating a reliable and necessary citation data source for monographs -- a very challenging issue, because, unlike journals and conference proceedings, books have specific requirements, and several problems emerge not only in the context of subject classification, but also in their role as cited publications and in citing publications. The Problem: lgoic of scientific authorship is distinct from intellectual property law & change across disciplines & institutions.  Unlike nonscientific work which is protected by copyright at moment it is fixed in tangible medium, scientific claim does not count as such unless made public & subjected to peer evaluation, b/c based not on \"personal expression\" but truth claims about the world.  \"Scientific authorship is not a right but a reward.\"

\n

Qualitative assessments of scientific work have given way in practice to quantitative (though this is much criticized).  Already time consuming processes of in-depth evaluation become \"conceptual nightmares\" when a vitae includes \"dozens of articles coauthored with dozens of other scientists\"

\n

Credit & accountability are two sides of scientific authorship coin -- these issues have become urgent in wake of numerous cases of scientific fraud & misconduct.  Pressure building towards reform.

\n

Scientists cannot copyright b/c objects of IP are aritfacts not nature and scientists write nature/fact which are in public domain.  They can become authors as patent-holders of genetic objects (argue that these natural objects have been extracted & processed) or useful processes.  But this is not scientific authorship. \"Contrary to patent applicants who try to minimize their overlap with 'previous art,' scientists buttress their new claims by connecting them as much as possible to the body of previous scientific literature.\"

\n

\"If you can't treat scientific authorship as IP authorship nor can you say tha tthe author of science is nature itself, then you need to redefine the authorial function fo the scientist in a way that does not turn him or her into an IP-style author and yet acknowledges the human cause of that claim about nature.  This, I believe has been achieved by treating the scientist not as a legal subject (who operates in an IP context), but only as a body with a name.\"

\n

Before emergence of large-scale multiauthorship, \"science administrators and editors were able to treat scientific authorship as a non-problem, as something similar to its literary cousin.  It seemed plausible to think of the scientist as the person who had the idea, did the work, wrote the paper, and took credit and responsibility for it...Multiauthorship has unhinged this unstable but plausible-looking conceptualization.\"

\n

International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE)  has required that each name refer to a person who is fully responsible for entire article (not just a single task).  Also put forward stringent definitions of authorship in attempt to control scale -- to qualify as author, you must make intellectual contribution not other forms of labor.

\n

 

\n

2 new frameworks for scientific authorship:

\n

1. comes out of debates in biomedical community -- suggestions but JAMA deputy editor to substitute \"contributor\" for \"author\" and attach verbal description of contribution on first page. Special contributors must be designated & discloses as \"guarantors\" for whole work. [Biagioli: 'guarantor' should not be seen as author, but as auditor who is also responsible for clean-up operations and aftercare of publication: \"like credit, responsibility appears to be turning into a more oeprational category and less of an essential feature attached to the name of the author.\"]

2. Particle physicists at Fermilab who appointed a committee to develop bylaws for regulating their multi-instiutional (and multi-milliondollar) collaboration.  Guildelines for membership in CDF Collaboration (different ones for PhDs, grad students, technical personnel).  Every publication includes all names on Standard Author List. \"...only a member who has paid his or her dues thorugh labor becomes an author.\"  CDF collaboration tied to specific apparatus (only a few places where physicists can detect particles).  Instead of seeing credit as attached to responsibility, they have corporate protocols for internal review of manuscripts -- 3 rounds of internal review

Ch 1, \"Foucault's Chiasmus: Authorship between Science and Literature in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries,\" Roger Chartier

Revision of Foucault's argument that scientific discourse becomes anonymous at the moment that literary discourse becomes authored(invention fo copyright in 18th C)

Chartier's scattered reflections:

1. construction of author as proprietor linked to defense of booksellers' privileges. (not modern systems of private property, as Foucault argues).  There are examples of author as proprietor pre-1710, but judiciary debates following Statute of 1710 defined new position for \"author\" as opp to \"aristocratic \"gentleman-writer\" or ethos/practices of Republic of Letters in which circulation of manuscript addressed to chosen public of peers.  Only after 1710 statute is author-function attributed to forms of writing excluded from logic of literary propriety before 18th century, such as correspondence. Pope v. Curll (1741) established letter writer's intangible property in copyright -- thus makes object of copyright immaterial and mingles 2 defs of intellectual property: (1) right of author to control publication/reputation & (2) property right in sense of economic interest in inalienable commodity (citing Mark Rose here).

\n

2. Reappraisal of history of literary authorship reframes question of scientific.  Contra Foucault, some 17c & 18c texts only considered truthful if author was indicated.  Author = aristocrat who authenticates/authorizes work of technician.  Not just simple shift from auctoritates to anonymity.  First, in Middle Ages & Renaissance a large part of scientific discourse was not referred back to canonical actoritates but was collective an anonymous knowledge: books of secrets, craft manuals, libri di bottega, commonplace books.  Secondly, it is clear that scientific revolution of 17th century non synonymous with expulsion of proper names - authority progressively displaced from princely power to scientific authorship.

\n

All the elements Chartier adds to Foucault's canvas come from a sociology of texts defined as study of \"the text as a recorded form\" - DF McKenzie - author function understood not only discursively but as a function of materiality of text - new form of the book of which unity is both physical and authorial.
