Specifically, we maintain that such researchers need to recognize mechanisms by which students can be constituted as cultured (gendered, racialized, etc.) subjects, and that many of these mechanisms will depend on certain characteristics particular to asynchronous, text-based learning environments. Characteristics and mechanisms discussed include disembodied text-based performance of identities, speech-like writing, space-flexibility and student geographical location, space-time flexibility, and class attendance/participation, time flexibility, and asynchronous discussion threads. The development of multicultural counseling competencies from an integrative educational perspective was overviewed as a framework for empirically exploring these factors. The group differences on counselor trainees' scores of perceived multicultural competence was explored based on clinical supervision, number of multicultural classes, and number of non-White clients. Results indicate that receiving clinical supervision related to multicultural issues and conducting counseling with more non-White clients interacted significantly with higher scores of multicultural competence. Recent studies have paid a great deal of attention to the importance of learning organisations and emphasize distance education practices as an innovative strategy. This study fills a gap in the literature by using a comparative study to examine the distance education institutes as learning organisations. The study is significant as it compares the performance of distance education institutes as learning organizations. It also helps to identify quality improvements of learning organisations and provides insights to evaluate the integration of sharing learning in higher education practices within different cultural contexts. Purpose of the Study: The purpose of the study is to investigate the comparison between the performances of the distance education institutes in North Cyprus and the UK Higher Education Institutions. These institutes' performances as learning organizations give a competitive advantage to their higher education system. Methods: The qualitative research method, including in-depth interviews, researcher observations and self-reports, were used to examine these institutes. Data were then analyzed thematically and triangulated. The participants from North Cyprus and UK were purposefully selected as a sample on a voluntary basis. The multiple data collection techniques were reviewed by experts from Turkey, UK and United States and piloted in order to increase the credibility of the research. Findings and Results: Findings revealed that higher education institutions need to use distance education practices as an innovative strategy for continuous improvement. In addition, findings show that the distance education institute in the UK performs better as a learning organization than the distance education institute in North Cyprus, which has limited infrastructure and lacks a collective vision. Conclusions and Recommendations: The research findings suggest that developing a learning organization with distance education practices provides an opportunity for the higher education system to extend its influence on external and multicultural environments. There is also an increasing need to provide strategic planning and evaluation of its effectiveness for the development of distance education institutes as learning organizations. In addition to the two cases examined, other comparisons could also be made considering the cultural dimensions. Using autoregressive and cross-lagged techniques, the authors found that discrimination in early adolescence predicted depressive symptoms, alienation, school engagement, and grades in middle adolescence but that early socioemotional adjustment and academic performance did not predict later experiences of discrimination. Further, their investigation of whether earlier or contemporaneous experiences of discrimination influenced developmental outcomes in middle adolescence indicated differential effects, with contemporaneous experiences of discrimination affecting socioemotional adjustment, whereas earlier discrimination was more influential for academic performance. Finally, they found a persistent negative effect of acculturation on the link between discrimination and adolescents' developmental outcomes, such that those adolescents who were more acculturated (in this case, higher in American orientation) experienced more deleterious effects of discrimination on both socioemotional and academic outcomes. Robert Teranishi, Carola Suárez-Orozco, and Marcelo Suárez-Orozco argue that increasing their educational attainment, economic productivity, and civic engagement should thus be a national priority. Community colleges offer one particularly important venue for achieving this objective. Because they are conveniently located, cost much less than four-year colleges, feature open admissions, and accommodate students who work or have family responsibilities, community colleges are well suited to meet the educational needs of immigrants who want to obtain an affordable postsecondary education, learn English-language skills, and prepare for the labor market. The authors explore how community colleges can serve immigrant students more effectively. Already, more immigrant students attend community colleges than any other type of postsecondary institution. But community colleges could attract even more immigrant students through outreach programs that help them to apply and to navigate the financial aid system. Federal reforms should also allow financial aid to cover tuition for English as a Second Language courses. Community colleges themselves could raise funds to provide scholarships for immigrants and undocumented students. Although there are many good ideas for interventions that can boost enrollment and improve the performance of immigrant students in community colleges, rigorous research on effective programs is scant. The research community and community colleges need to work together closely to evaluate these programs with a view toward what works and why. This role is particularly critical for students who because of educational, cultural or financial disadvantage or because they are members of social groups currently under-represented in higher education, may require additional transitional support to 'level the playing field.' The challenge faced by HEIs is to provide this 'support' in a way that is integrated into regular teaching and learning practices and reaches all commencing students. The Student Success Program (SSP) is an intervention in operation at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) designed to identify and support those students deemed to be at risk of disengaging from their learning and their institution. Two sets of evidence of the impact of the SSP are presented: First, its expansion (a) from a one-faculty pilot project (Nelson et al. in Stud Learn Eval Innov Dev 6:1-15, ) to all faculties and (b) into a variety of applications mirroring the student life cycle; and second, an evaluation of the impact of the SSP on students exposed to it. The outcomes suggest that: the SSP is an example of good practice that can be successfully applied to a variety of learning contexts and student enrolment situations; and the impact of the intervention on student persistence is sustained for at least 12 months and positively influences student retention. It is claimed that the good practice evidenced by the SSP is dependent on its integration into the broader First Year Experience Program at QUT as an example of transition pedagogy in action.
