The present moment is filled with DH practitioners creating visualizations of ‘big data,’ mapping connections between people and ancient cities, and building archives dedicated to long-dead authors. DH projects flourish in collaborations across disciplines and at the intersections of technology and humanistic inquiry. Yet despite the \"h\" in DH we often get caught up in technocentric discourses that prompt us to produce more, \"scale\" our projects, increase our \"users.\" In this talk, I encourage us to pause, reflect, slow down and bring back an emphasis on building relationships as central to the practices of digital humanities.",

"abstractNote": "Once upon a time scholars assumed that the knowing subject in the disciplines is transparent, disincorporated from the known and untouched by the geo-political configuration of the world in which people are racially ranked and regions are racially configured. From a detached and neutral point of observation (that Colombian philosopher Santiago Castro-Gómez describes as the hubris of the zero point ), the knowing subject maps the world and its problems, classifies people and projects into what is good for them. Today that assumption is no longer tenable, although there are still many believers. At stake is indeed the question of racism and epistemology. And once upon a time scholars assumed that if you ‘come’ from Latin America you have to ‘talk about’ Latin America; that in such a case you have to be a token of your culture. Such expectation will not arise if the author ‘comes’ from Germany, France, England or the US. As we know: the first world has knowledge, the third world has culture; Native Americans have wisdom, Anglo Americans have science. The need for political and epistemic de-linking here comes to the fore, as well as decolonializing and decolonial knowledges, necessary steps for imagining and building democratic, just, and nonimperial/colonial societies.",

"abstractNote": "Unknown knowns—or “public secrets”—may play an integral part in publicly funded medical science. In one large transnational field research site in Africa, such unknowing pertains to vital material inequalities across the relations of scientific production. These inequalities are open to experience but remain often unacknowledged in public speech and scientific texts. This silence is not usually achieved by suppressing knowledge but through linguistic convention and differentiation between places and moments of knowing and ignorance. Switching between known and unknown according to situation and interlocutor is an important, largely implicit skill that maintains relations necessary to conduct clinical research—linking bodies, lives, institutions, and technologies across differentials of resources, expertise, and power. Unknowing, then, facilitates research; and it shapes the resulting work and perpetuates the political and economic contradictions that pervade the context and the research endeavor itself. Unknowing thus poses a challenge for conventional anthropological modes of critique and engagement. [Africa, science, medical research, ignorance, ethics, justice]",

"abstractNote": "In this ethnographic study I examine the significance of music-making in Jamaican society in the light of the increasing interpenetration of law and technology with cultural practices. I center the local institution of the street dance as the heart of Jamaicans' musical practices. Grounded in a historical analysis of musicking - the active practice of engaging with music - in Jamaica and in the Jamaican diaspora, this study reveals how Jamaica's colonial past and present shapes musicking's cultural, political and economic significance in Jamaican life. Most specifically, Jamaican music-makers' collaborative and repetitive practices, that draw on and reinforce shared cultural history, contradict current local and international copyright law. Copyright law relies on historically and culturally specific assumptions about the practice of creativity, and requires specific institutional context in order to function. But what relation do those assumptions and institutions have to the interests and traditions of music-makers? And how does that relationship change in the context of increasingly globalized copyright law that is increasingly and intimately enforced through globally networked technology? Through social history and ethnographic data generated by interviews, participant-observation, musical analysis, I reveal how Jamaican musicking practices are creative, productive, and rewarding for individual Jamaicans as well as for communities. I focus especially on the Jamaican poor who dominate Jamaican musical authorship, and who rely on alternate normative systems that shape both their creative practices and their understandings of ownership, control, and the distribution of money deriving from music. I map Jamaican music-makers' engagement, resistance, and reinterpretation of copyright law concepts, and provide an analysis of music-making that reveals how copyright is informed by colonial assumptions that Jamaican practices can sometimes resist and subvert. Drawing on the impressive cultural contributions of Jamaican music-makers to Jamaican and global music culture, which derives from their specific practices (including those that contradict copyright), I offer a critique of copyright informed by a concern for substantive equality, centered on the needs of the Jamaican poor who dominate music-making and offer a corrective theoretical framework for analyzing policy and music-making in the digital era.",

"abstractNote": "‘The Global South’ has become a shorthand for the world of non-European, postcolonial peoples. Synonymous with uncertain development, unorthodox economies, failed states, and nations fraught with corruption, poverty, and strife, it is that half of the world about which the ‘Global North’ spins theories. Rarely is it seen as a source of theory and explanation for world historical events. Yet, as many nation-states of the Northern Hemisphere experience increasing fiscal meltdown, state privatization, corruption, and ethnic conflict, it seems as though they are evolving southward, so to speak, in both positive and problematic ways. Is this so? In what measure? What might this mean for the very dualism on which such global oppositions rest? Drawing on recent research, primarily in Africa, this paper touches on a range of familiar themes—law, labor, and the contours of contemporary capitalism—in order to ask how we might understand these things with theory developed from an ‘ex-centric’ vantage. This view renders some key problems of our time at once strange and familiar, giving an ironic twist to the evolutionary pathways long assumed by social scientists.",
