many choose to use technology to determine the sex of their babies weeks before they are born? The popularity of accessing ultrasound imaging to \"determine\" fetal sex resonates with a contemporary gender liberalism that affirms binary sex, gender equality, and (limited) gender variation within the logic of consumer choice. Prenatal ultrasound technology is a central and current means of disciplining women into a normative maternal identity and authenticating the sex and gender identities of both mother and child. The ultrasound exam naturalizes the binary sex system upon which maternal and filial identities hinge, through the technological construction of the image of a normatively sexed body. By insisting upon the primacy of naturally sexed bodies even while deflecting attention from bodies onto images, commodities, and discursive behaviours, the popular discourse surrounding ultrasound imaging of fetal sex and the sharing of images of fetal genitals uniquely authenticates the binary sex system as the \"biological\" limit of gender and sexual variation. Pregnant women are not erased by the hypervisibility of their fetuses. Rather, as they correctly access the medical technologies and goods of middle-class motherhood, they become visible as the properly gendered mothers of properly gendered children. Résumé À une époque oã bien des femmes choisissent de réduire au minimum les interventions médicales à la naissance de leur enfant et affirment de plus en plus qu'elles n'ont aucune préférence quant au sexe de celui-ci, pourquoi les femmes sont-elles si nombreuses à opter pour les technologies prénatales permettant de déterminer le sexe de leur enfant plusieurs semaines avant la naissance ? La popularité des échographies permettant de Â&laqno; déterminer Â&raqno; le sexe du foetus s'inscrivent dans un libéralisme contemporain qui souligne la binarité des sexes, leur égalité et leur variation (limitée) dans le cadre d'une logique de liberté du consommateur. Les techniques d'échographie prénatale constituent un moyen essentiel et moderne pour affirmer l'identité maternelle des femmes et normaliser l'identité sexuelle et sexuée aussi bien de la mÃr̈e que de l'enfant. Le test échographique souligne le caractÃr̈e naturel de la binarité du systÃm̈e sexuel, lequel constitue le pivot des identités maternelle et filiale, grâce à la construction technologique de l'image d'un corps sexué au sens normatif du terme. En insistant sur la primauté d'un corps naturellement sexué alors même qu'on détourne l'attention du corps pour se concentrer sur l'image qu'on en fournit, sur le produit de consommation que donne cette image et sur les comportements discursifs qui en découlent, le discours populaire entourant les images du foetus obtenues par ultrasons et la diffusion d'images prénatales des organes génitaux deviennent ainsi des instruments uniques pour confirmer la binarité sexuelle comme limite Â&laqno; biologique Â&raqno; des sexes et de la variation sexuelle. Les femmes enceintes ne sont pas effacées par l'hyper visibilité de leur foetus.
