ספרו של חנוך בן-פזי מבקש להעניק משמעות מוסרית למעשה הפרשנות. הוא עוקב אחר תורת הפרשנות של עמנואל לוינס ומציע לראות את היחס שבין בני אדם לספרים כאחד האופנים שבהם הקיום האנושי בא לידי ביטוי, כזה המאפשר לאדם לחיות חיים ראויים ומוסריים. העיון במשמעותו של הספר ובמשמעותה של הקריאה הוא האתגר העומד ביסודו של חיבור זה. ספר זה יכול לשמש צוהר לעולמה המרתק והעשיר של ההרמנויטיקה, כמו גם לשמש מדריך לעולמו של עמנואל לוינס אשר מחבר בין שני עולמות - העולם הפילוסופי והעולם התלמודי, כלומר מעמיד את האפשרות להתבונן בעין פילוסופית בחכמה היהודית ובספרות התלמודית שעיצבה אותה, לצד האפשרות להוסיף בעולם הפילוסופי את המחשבה הייחודית של התלמוד. הספר מציע לקוראיו מבט מחודש ומרענן על הכינוי עם-הספר, ועל אודות מקומם של הספרים בתרבות היהודית שהוקסמה ועדיין נפעמת מהממד הקיומי והאנושי שמתקיים בספר. ‬
