            "abstractNote": "The deviance-inhibiting power of religion is among the oldest criminological inquiries. To date, the extant empirical literature contains mixed and oftentimes contradictory evidence. Social scientists have argued that the ambiguous body of religion-deviance evidence is attributable, in some part, to known methodological weaknesses. This study responds to the criticisms of prior research by utilizing a validated measure of religiosity, employing a quasi-experimental design, and observing actual deviant behavior. The results of this study find that religion is indeed a powerful predictor of deviant behavior.             "abstractNote": "The relation between motivated social cognition and the religiosity dimensions, which Wulff (1991, 1997) described (Exclusion vs. Inclusion of Transcendence and Literal vs. Symbolic), was investigated in a Flemish speaking Belgian student sample (N=330). The Need for Closure Scale (NFC, Webster & Kruglanski, 1994) was used to measure motivated social cognition and the Post-Critical Belief Scale (Duriez et al., 2000) was used to measure Wulff's religiosity dimensions. Although NFC was expected to relate to the Literal vs. Symbolic dimension only, results also revealed a relation between NFC and the Exclusion vs. Inclusion of Transcendence dimension. However, whereas the former relationship is due to the NFC facets, Discomfort with Ambiguity and Closed-Mindedness, the latter relation can be attributed to the facets, Order and Structure and Predictability. Results obtained in a second Flemish speaking Belgian student sample (N=392) confirm these findings. Thus, apparently, whereas religious belief as such seems to be associated with a preference for order and structure as well as predictability, it is those who deal with religious content in a literal way who are incapable of dealing with alternative opinions.             "abstractNote": "As a facet of learning and a means to accomplish the larger goals of higher education, spiritual development is important for students of all faiths. One obstacle that can get in the way of this development is \"Christian privilege\"–the conscious and subconscious advantages often afforded the Christian faith in America's colleges and universities. In this article, the author suggests that Christian privilege must be acknowledged and dismantled before environments truly conducive to spiritual development for all can be created. Christian privilege–as well as other kinds of privilege–hinders the development of all students. It may forestall or foreclose Christian students' critical examination of themselves and their own traditions while simultaneously stifling non-Christian students' expression of their spiritual identity. Helping students recognize the existence of Christian privilege and how it impinges on learning is an important first step in managing both the subtle and apparent tensions that exist on a spiritually plural campus and in openly exploring the ethical and existential questions important to life in the twenty-first century. With that recognition, the higher education community can begin to create spaces for dialogue in which non-Christian and Christian students alike feel free to openly share and learn with others. The author's intent in writing this article is to help start a community dialogue about how to manage spiritually plural campus environments, beginning with a definition of Christian privilege and examples of student experiences. The article concludes with recommendations for applying specific principles in order to create communities of dialogue on individual campuses. (Contains 19 notes.)",

Grounding their theoretical contribution in concrete practice, the authors begin with a report on a summer camp with young adults and analyze that experience in light of concepts of culture and tradition, focusing on participation and transformation as two core characteristics.             "abstractNote": "This study investigated the interaction between religiosity (defined as church attendance) and spirituality (defined as personal beliefs in God or a higher power) on psychosocial adjustment. Four groups were created capturing 4 different religious/spiritual orientations. Differences were assessed between the groups on a wide range of psychosocial indicators. Participants included 6578 adolescents ages 13–18 encompassing a school district in Ontario, Canada. Results were striking with regards to the consistency with which religious youth reported more positive adjustment than did non-religious youth, regardless of level of spirituality. Spirituality may not be as salient an influence on behavior as religiosity. The secondary analyses indicated that the advantage for religiosity may not be entirely unique to church attendance, but rather a function of being part of any community. However, where religiosity may be uniquely associated with adjustment (over and above benefits associated with participation in any community) is in lower levels of risk behaviors.             "abstractNote": "For a long time in Russia, education was conducted in isolation from any fundamental theological conceptions of the universe. However, religion not only harmoniously synthesized in itself the culture of the world and universal human values, it also served to mitigate the harsh influence of many social doctrines on the spiritual and moral upbringing of the rising generation. Religious and ethical education of adolescents can help fill substantial gaps in their knowledge about the \"eternal questions\" of life and stimulate their active cognitive and exploratory involvement in thinking about global worldview problems such as the existence and nature of God; the meaning of human life; life after death; and the nature and origin of good and evil. Religious education can serve to correct the social and moral orientations of students who, by thinking–perhaps for the first time–about the meaning of their existence, are now able to take a different view of the world around them and their own place in it. This article discusses how religious and ethical education encourages students to take an active interest in exploring and understanding problems of philosophy and worldview.",

            "abstractNote": "The relation between religion and racism has often been studied, but summarising these studies provides a fragmented picture. Generally, American research concludes there is a positive relation, whereas research in the Low Countries concludes this relation is negative. However, the conclusions of the latter research tradition might be premature, because inaccurate religiosity measures were used. The results of this study suggest that both frequency of church attendance and belief salience are no longer significantly related to racism. Four religious attitudes are described, based on individuals inclusion or exclusion of transcendence, and preference for symbolic or literal interpretation. Orthodoxy (literal, transcendent) and External Critique (literal, non-transcendent) were significantly positively related to racism, whereas Relativism (symbolic, non-transcendent) was significantly negatively related to it. Second Naïveté (symbolic, transcendent) at first sight turned out not to be significantly related to racism. However; a path analysis—in which some important background variables such as age and education were included—suggested the existence of an indirect negative relation. Overall it looks as if the privatisation of religion has reached new heights. Thus nowadays, studies of the relation between religion and racism need to focus on the cognitive (rather than behavioural) aspects of how people deal with the religious realm.             "abstractNote": "Longitudinal studies published between 1980 and 2001 (N = 10) are reviewed for evidence that the religiosity of adolescents is causally related to their sexual behaviors. Results indicate that religiosity delays the sexual debut of adolescent females. Findings are mixed for adolescent males. Although only half of the studies examined the effects of race and ethnicity, results of these studies reported similar effects for White and Black adolescents. These findings are discussed in light of their implications for researchers, educators, policy makers, and others concerned with adolescent sexual health and well-being.             "abstractNote": "In 1791, the Founding Fathers of the United States added the First Amendment to the Constitution saying that the nation would have no established religion. This was a new experiment in Church–State relations. The writers of the amendment were fearful of concentrations of power. We now know that the First Amendment had a positive, not a negative effect on religious institutions. In the past two centuries, trials of the First Amendment arose due to issues over postal service on Sunday, religious polygamy, Sunday closing laws for businesses, and prayer in public schools. The American experience shows that disestablishment of religion does not weaken religious institutions, but rather strengthens them. It is a principle that is constantly being challenged by groups with strong religious beliefs who strive for some form of establishment.",

            "abstractNote": "Religious communities are known to instill standards of achievement in their young people, but this observation may not apply as well to disadvantaged youth and their culture. In this study, we explore whether religious involvement enables youth in low-income neighborhoods to stay on track in school, rather than falling behind. Using data from two waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, we find that adolescents in low-income neighborhoods do not differ in their church attendance patterns from their peers in higher-income areas. However, their religious involvement is more likely to contribute to their academic progress than it is among youth in higher-income neighborhoods, even with adjustments for key risk and protective factors. This cross-level interaction involving youth church attendance shows a consistent relationship with several other measures of neighborhood disadvantage. We explore explanations for church attendance's uniquely positive effect in impoverished neighborhoods and its broader implications.             "abstractNote": "Liberal proponents of school choice increasingly advance the diversity argument in support of programs such as vouchers. The diversity argument states that respect for the worldviews of parents requires allowing them to send their children to schools that reflect those views. But whatever its merits, such an argument cannot be made on behalf of adolescents insofar as these students have the same capacity to have a worldview upon which liberal respect for parental concerns is based. When it comes to high school, it isthe students, not parents, who are the ones with a legitimate claim to the diversity argument. I explore whether the diversity argument is coherent ifthe same persons who are the recipients of education are also those who advance this argument. Ultimately, analysis reveals both principled and practical reasons that render the diversity argument incapable of justifying school choice for adolescents.",

            "abstractNote": "This article considers causal interconnections between adolescent sexuality and the religious affiliation and participation of adolescents. Our empirical analysis is consistent with previous research in showing religious involvement and adolescent sexual attitudes and behavior to be strongly correlated. Young people who attend church frequently and who value religion in their lives have the least permissive attitudes and are less experienced sexually. This study, however, goes beyond the point of view of earlier research in which the assumption was that the empirical correlation between religious involvement and sexuality entirely reflects the impact of religiosity on sexual attitudes and experience. The theoretical arguments presented here support the traditional hypothesis of an effect of religious participation on adolescent sexuality, but the study also posits that sexual behavior and attitudes significantly influence religious involvement. This causal model is estimated on the basis of data from a sample of young men and women and their mothers. The empirical analysis supports the theoretical arguments in that significant causal effects in both directions are found in the data.             "abstractNote": "How does religion influence the way Americans understand the racial inequality that pervades our society? Only a few studies have explored this question, concentrating on how religious conservatism affects whites' views, and generating conflicting findings. Using data from a national random sample telephone survey (Edgell, Gerteis, and Hartmann 2003, N = 2081), we find that among whites, both gender and education shape the effects of religious conservatism on attitudes toward racial inequality. We show that religious subcultural effects are different for African Americans and Hispanic Americans than they are for whites. We also find that, across religious subcultures, the more religiously involved have less progressive views on racial equality than those who are less involved. We demonstrate the interaction of religious subculture, race, education, and gender in forming American's views of racial inequality and we identify other religious effects on views of racial inequality not explored in previous research. We argue that to understand how religion shapes racial attitudes we need to do more in-depth research on the religious subcultures of non-whites, expand our focus beyond conservative Protestants, take into account religious institutional factors that operate across religious subcultures, and explore the structural factors that shape the use of religious cultural tools in forming racial attitudes. The first hypothesis specifies that people who have more doubts about their faith will be less satisfied with their health, and experience more symptoms of depression than individuals who have fewer doubts about their religious beliefs. The second hypothesis states that the potentially deleterious effects of religious doubt will be greater for people who occupy formal roles in the church. Findings from a nationwide survey provide support for both hypotheses. The results underscore the importance of looking at the potential costs, as well as the benefits, of religious involvement.
