While the existing literature suggests power relations and technology to be path dependent and influenced by each other, interactions across these evolutionary processes remain poorly understood. We studied the history of four retail firms over 40 years, applying event structure analysis to explicate key dynamics. Companies exhibited two episodes of converging path dependency, where power relations further increased technological inertia. In each case, power initially concentrated outside the central headquarters. Path-breaking change led all firms to centralize power and implement networked IT systems supporting central control. We discuss the ability of converging technological and organizational path dependencies to create competitive disadvantage. New widely available technological innovations can disadvantage a firm vis-á-vis its competitors when the firm's established power structure prevents it from fully exploiting the innovation, and the path dependence of power relations prevents adaptation. \nJon (Sean) Jasperson is an assistant professor of MIS in the Michael F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma. His research interests include the adoption, use, management, and implementation of information technology in organizational settings. He received his Ph.D. in MIS from Florida State University.
\nTraci A. Carte is an assistant professor of MIS in the Michael F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma. She received her Ph.D. in MIS from the University of Georgia. Her research focuses on contingency factors related to IT implementation. Her research has been published in Information Systems Research, Decision Support Systems, Public Productivity and Management Review and in numerous national and international conference proceedings.
\nCarol S. Saunders is a professor of MIS at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. She earned a Ph.D. in management at the University of Houston. Her current research interests include electronic commerce, the impact of information systems on power and communication, virtual teams, and interorganizational linkages. She served as the Conference Chair for the International Conference on Information Systems in 1999 and the General Conference Chair for the Telecommuting Conference in 1996. Carol is an associate editor for MIS Quarterly, Decision Sciences Journal, Information Systems Research, Communications of the AIS, and Information Resources Management Journal and a senior editor for e-Services Journal.
\nBrian S. Butler is an assistant professor of Business Administration in the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. His research interests include the development and modeling of online communities, the interplay of power and information technology in organizations, and the role of rhetorical communication in organizational activity. He received his Ph.D. in Information Systems from Carnegie Mellon University.
\nHenry J. P. Croes (CWO4, Retired)is a Ph.D. candidate in the MIS Division of the Michael F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma. Henry's research areas include machine learning and diffusion of business-to-business Internet markets. Prior to his graduate studies, he designed communications and computer networks for the United States Army.
\nWeijun Zheng is a Ph.D. candidate in the MIS Division of the Michael F. Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma. His research interests include electronic commerce and data warehousing management as well as financial information systems.
