In particular, it questions the acceptance and ubiquity of the bob. The article regards haircuts as semiotic constructs and modes of communication; as such, like all texts, haircuts can be subjected to multimodal discourse analysis. Modality is used as an analytical tool in approaching the analysis of the bob as a meaning-making resource. The bob is culturally and historically located before a comparative analysis of contemporary popular-culture texts which have ‘imported’ the bob is undertaken. The article attempts to find the bob’s core meaning by observing intertextual semiotic commonalities. The existence and evolution of these lexical items are related to the medium in which they were created, as their meanings are associated with a visual-spatial environment created by textual chat in the virtual world. The different meanings of ∧and <-- currently exist in polysemy in the community, and the continuum of meanings are documented using data from natural language use spanning three years. While representations of Obama as an ape, thug, or terrorist were generally recognized as clear forms of anti-Black racism, images I identify as inferentially racist operate within a postracial ideology in which Obama is figured as a messiah, whites' 'Black best friend,' or a mythical creature. For some viewers, these inferentially racist images did not incite the controversy of those read as overtly racist because the former were read as positive portrayals of uplift and progress. We draw a parallel between narrative visualization interpretation and evidence from framing studies in political messaging, decision-making, and literary studies. Devices for understanding the rhetorical nature of narrative information visualizations are presented, informed by the rigorous application of concepts from critical theory, semiotics, journalism, and political theory. We draw attention to how design tactics represent additions or omissions of information at various levels-the data, visual representation, textual annotations, and interactivity-and how visualizations denote and connote phenomena with reference to unstated viewing conventions and codes. Classes of rhetorical techniques identified via a systematic analysis of recent narrative visualizations are presented, and characterized according to their rhetorical contribution to the visualization. We describe how designers and researchers can benefit from the potentially positive aspects of visualization rhetoric in designing engaging, layered narrative visualizations and how our framework can shed light on how a visualization design prioritizes specific interpretations. The dominant responses to the illustration revealed pervasive colorblind, antiracialist discourses and scapegoating rituals that erect significant obstacles to racial justice. Probing the validity of this far-reaching claim requires an investigation of multimodal discourse. In this article, the authors analyse the 25 metaphors that structure a sample of 30 political cartoons pertaining to the global financial crisis that hit the world in 2008, and find that certain source domains recur systematically. They examine the role of visual and verbal modalities and argue that metaphors are manifestations of underlying conceptual ones.
