Si plusieurs articles de ce recueil complètent ses investigations sur les moines et les moniales, qu'il a fortement remis en valeur pour la période « moderne », d'autres textes renouvellent notre connaissance du clergé séculier, des mentalités et des spiritualités religieuses (des humbles comme des élites), de la culture et des institutions ecclésiastiques, de leurs rapports à l'État et à la société d'Ancien Régime, marquée par une liaison étroite entre le civil et le religieux. De la sorte, dans une démarche qui est toujours celle de l'historien, nous sommes bien « Au cœur religieux de l'époque moderne », comme l'avait envisagé Lucien Febvre pour le xvie siècle.",

"abstractNote": "Sous le règne de Charles VIII et quelques années seulement avant sa disparition annoncée par le concordat de Bologne de 1516, la vitalité de l’élection épiscopale, par laquelle les chanoines d’une cathédrale choisissent leur évêque, est surprenante. Rituel permettant l’expression de l’autonomie des chanoines et la participation des fidèles, on comprend qu’elle présente des aspects incompatibles avec la volonté centralisatrice des pouvoirs pontifical et royal, soucieux de maîtriser la désignation de ces prélats, hommes forts de l’Église et du royaume. Ce faisceau de volontés contradictoires engendre de nombreux conflits entre plusieurs candidats, souvent portés devant la justice, et provoquant des schismes à l’échelle des diocèses. Le déroulement et l’efficacité des rituels épiscopaux, l’implication des différents acteurs de la désignation épiscopale, la prégnance toujours plus forte de la justice dans les affaires ecclésiastiques, le mode de résolution des conflits : en s’appuyant essentiellement sur des sources de la pratique canoniale et des sources judiciaires, l’auteur donne un éclairage nouveau sur ces aspects essentiels de la vie de l’Église, et dresse le tableau d’un chaos organisé qui a sans aucun doute eu sa part de responsabilité dans le déclenchement de la Réforme protestante.",

"abstractNote": "Cet article traite du cumul de bénéfices ecclésiastiques par les chanoines de la cathédrale du Mans au XIVe siècle. Il s’agit d’une étude concernant tous types de bénéfices : prébendes et dignités de cathédrales, de collégiales et églises paroissiales. Après une rapide évocation de l’organisation du chapitre cathédral du Mans à cette époque, ce travail analyse les différents aspects de la pratique du cumul. Cela porte tout d’abord sur les bénéfices cumulés, puis sur les chanoines qui pratiquaient le cumul. L’étude des chanoines cumulateurs recouvre autant leur origine sociale et géographique que leurs activités à l’extérieur du chapitre : service de la cour pontificale, de seigneurs laïques, d’évêques et enseignement. Enfin l’influence du cumul sur la vie du chapitre cathédral est étudiée : durée des canonicats, relation des dignitaires du chapitre cathédral du Mans au cumul et présence des cumulateurs dans le quotidien de l’institution.",

"abstractNote": "Jean de Romiroy dont l'activité au concile de Bâle a été mise en lumière par le P. Emmen en 1957, et Jean de Rovroy, auteur une traduction étudiée par Bossuat en 1960, sont en réalité un seul et même personnage, qu'il paraît préférable de désigner du nom de Jean de Rouvroy. Né sans doute un peu avant 1380, secrétaire du duc Louis Orléans en 1403, Jean de Rouvroy obtint la maîtrise en théologie à Paris entre 1413 et 1416 et fut quelque temps maître du collège de Fortet. Il vécut plus tard à Bourges où il devint vers 1425 chanoine de la cathédrale et de la Sainte-Chapelle. Les registres capitulaires de ces deux églises nous renseignent sur sa vie canoniale jusqu'à sa mort survenue le 10 juillet 1461. De 1433 à 1436 ; , il représenta le chapitre de Bourges et l'évêque du Puy au concile de Bâle. Il incita le concile à e prononcer en faveur de la thèse de l'Immaculée Conception et l'on conserve un sermon et deux opuscules qu'il composa pour soutenir cette cause. Vers le début du règne de Charles VII et peut-être avant 1425, il avait composé et dédié au roi une traduction des Stratagèmes de Frontin. Il fait preuve d'une bonne connaissance de l'Antiquité classique sans manifester cependant de véritables intentions humanistes telles qu'on en rencontre vers la même époque chez un Jean de Montreuil ou un Nicolas de Clamanges.",

"abstractNote": "[Unedited] Re-establishes Paris, through its symbiotic relationship with the royal court, as a major centre for the production, performance and transmission of sacred and secular polyphonic repertoires at the turn of the 15th c. It shows that the French royal court anchored in Paris represented an important point of reference for all musicians, including the composers Jean Vaillant, Jacquet de Noyon, J. Solage, Jean Carmen and Jean Cesaris, and paves the way for new interpretations ofthe surviving musical repertoires. Underlines the importance of Paris to the careers of musicians active in royal courtly circles as an ideal location for the development of networks ofsocial and professional acquaintances for musicians. The clerical nature of singers' and organists' training set them on a par with those clerks employed in the royal court and the governmental bodies based on the lIe-de-la-Cite, who patronized polyphonic music in the capital's ecclesiastical institutions. Focuses on the Sainte-Chapelle ofParis as a centre of musical excellence. The Sainte-Chapelle was linked to the court, through accumulation of offices and frequent movements of personnel, and to the citY, through accumulation ofbenefices at Parisian churches and chapels. Sainte-Chapelle musicians performed during processions through Paris, at royal courtly events contexts or on more private occasions patronized by clerks active in royal service. Discusses points of contact between musicians active in the University quarters and those active at the royal court, setting the scene for the transmission and discussion of courtly repertoires in the university. Information concerning the patronage of polyphony at the Dormans College by clerks active in royal service supports the theory of shared musical repertoires at court and in the university.",

"abstractNote": "The miniature in Les très riches heures du Duc de Berry (Chantilly, Musée Condé, MS 65, olim lat. 1284), depicted on fol. 158r by Jean Colombe and his workshop (1485–1489), shows a scene with priest celebrating the Christmas Mass and choristers singing around the altar of the Sainte-Chapelle in Chambéry erected by the Duke of Savoy. The Chambéry chapel, consisting of choirboys, masters and an organist, was possibly established concurently with the formal act of endowment and erection of the Sainte-Chapelle (1417–1418). The miniature shows its organization during the 1480s. In the background of the scene is shown a console with the organ, which possibly represents the instrument constructed by Jean Piaz, who also built the organ at the cathedral of Vercelli, an important center in the Duchy of Savoy. Although Jean Colombe’s image is not strictly realistic, it nevertheless permits preliminary conclusions about location, facade, the appearance of the pipes, and the size of the instrument. Besides providing information about musical life at the court of the Duke of Savoy in the 1480s, the scene has also a symbolic value, since the presence of a musical chapel demonstrates the distinction and emulation towards papal and cardinal chapels and towards the musical structure of laical rulers as kings and dukes.",
