"abstractNote": "Obtaining or approximating a geographic location for search results often motivates users to include place names and other geography-related terms in their queries. Previous work shows that queries that include geography-related terms correspond to a significant share of the users' demand. Therefore, it is important to recognize the association of documents to places in order to adequately respond to such queries. This paper describes strategies for text classification into geography-related categories, using evidence extracted from Wikipedia. We use terms that correspond to entry titles and the connections between entries in Wikipedia's graph to establish a semantic network from which classification features are generated. Results of experiments using a news data-set, classified over Brazilian states, show that such terms constitute valid evidence for the geographical classification of documents, and demonstrate the potential of this technique for text classification.",

"abstractNote": "A typical location extraction approach consists of two steps, location name detection and location entity disambiguation. Promising results have been obtained in the last decade based on natural language processing technologies. However, there are still two challenges which requires further investigation: 1)How to leverage the prior and contextual evidence to improve the location extraction performance, and 2) How to utilize the interdependence information between the named entity recognition step and disambiguation step. In this paper, we propose an iterative detection-ranking framework to address these problems as well as a set of novel features to mine contextual information from web resources. Experimental results show that our solution outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches, including Metacarta GeoTagger and Yahoo Placemaker.",

"abstractNote": "Twitter is an electronic medium that allows a large user populace to communicate with each other simultaneously. Inherent to Twitter is an asymmetrical relationship between friends and followers that provides an interesting social network like structure among the users of Twitter. Twitter messages, called tweets, are restricted to 140 characters and thus are usually very focused. We investigate the use of Twitter to build a news processing system, called TwitterStand, from Twitter tweets. The idea is to capture tweets that correspond to late breaking news. The result is analogous to a distributed news wire service. The difference is that the identities of the contributors/reporters are not known in advance and there may be many of them. Furthermore, tweets are not sent according to a schedule: they occur as news is happening, and tend to be noisy while usually arriving at a high throughput rate. Some of the issues addressed include removing the noise, determining tweet clusters of interest bearing in mind that the methods must be online, and determining the relevant locations associated with the tweets.",

"abstractNote": "News sources around the world generate constant streams of information, but effective streaming news retrieval requires an intimate understanding of the geographic content of news. This process of understanding, known as geotagging, consists of first finding words in article text that correspond to location names (toponyms), and second, assigning each toponym its correct lat/long values. The latter step, called toponym resolution, can also be considered a classification problem, where each of the possible interpretations for each toponym is classified as correct or incorrect. Hence, techniques from supervised machine learning can be applied to improve accuracy. New classification features to improve toponym resolution, termed adaptive context features, are introduced that consider a window of context around each toponym, and use geographic attributes of toponyms in the window to aid in their correct resolution. Adaptive parameters controlling the window's breadth and depth afford flexibility in managing a tradeoff between feature computation speed and resolution accuracy, allowing the features to potentially apply to a variety of textual domains. Extensive experiments with three large datasets of streaming news demonstrate the new features' effectiveness over two widely-used competing methods.",

"abstractNote": "Location information is critical to understanding the impact of a disaster, including where the damage is, where people need assistance and where help is available. We investigate the feasibility of applying Named Entity Recognizers to extract locations from microblogs, at the level of both geo-location and point-of-interest. Our experimental results show that such tools once retrained on microblog data have great potential to detect the where information, even at the granularity of point-of-interest.",

The system integrates technologies to address the problems related to information extraction and analysis of open source intelligence on the World Wide Web. By chaining together different techniques in text mining, automated machine learning and statistical analysis, we can automatically determine who, where and, to a certain extent, what is being reported in news articles.",

"abstractNote": "Recognizing spatial language in text documents, termed geoparsing, is useful for many applications, because together with mapping such language to lat/long values, also known as geocoding, it enables the connection of the unstructured textual realm with the structured realm of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) [11]. For example, news stories about events happening in a particular location can be explored on a map for a spatial understanding of these events, as implemented by applications like the European Media Monitor (EMM) [18] and NewsStand [13, 20]. Web pages, blogs, encyclopedia articles, news stories, tweets and travel reports can all benefit from such interlinking with maps, which requires the recognition of spatial language. Note that geoparsing can be considered as a more specific application of the task of Named Entity Recognition and Classification (NERC): NERC is concerned with automatically recognizing proper nouns of any kind, often meant to include monetary amounts, dates, and other types, while geoparsing is the NERC task applied to locations specifically. Geoparsing is also known by many names in the literature, including geotagging, georecognition, and toponym recognition, but for consistency, here we will refer only to geoparsing. In this paper, we provide an overview of the challenges related to geoparsing, several families of geoparsing methods, existing systems and data collections available for performing geoparsing, and open research questions related to geoparsing.",

It builds on the Digital Gazetteer Information Exchange (DGIE) workshop funded by the NSF in October 1999.Digital gazetteers are specialized KOS that map placenames and types of places to map-based locations and thus integrate word-based georeferencing to map-based georeferencing. The format consists of invited and selected presentations and discussion sessions, with the goal of developing collaborations for future research and development.Participants may provide handouts describing their own gazetteer and other NKOS related projects and will be given the opportunity to introduce their work and their interests briefly.",

This paper shows a multistage method for assigning a geographic focus to Web pages (GeoReferencing) according to their text contents. We suggest several heuristics for the disambiguation toponyms and a scoring procedure for focus determination. Furthermore, we provide an experimental methodology for evaluating the accuracy. Finally, we obtained promising results of over 70% accuracy with a city-level resolution.",

"abstractNote": "Determining geographic interpretations for place names, or toponyms, involves resolving multiple types of ambiguity. Place names commonly occur within lists and data tables, whose authors frequently omit qualifications (such as city or state containers) for place names because they expect the meaning of individual place names to be obvious from context. GeoWhiz is a system that demonstrates a novel technique for place name disambiguation (also known as toponym resolution). The system uses Bayesian inference to assign categories to user-specified lists of place names, then interprets individual toponyms based on the most likely category assignments. The categories are defined along three orthogonal dimensions: place types (e.g., cities, capitals, rivers, etc.), geographic containers, and prominence (e.g., based on population). A map interface enables users to explore possible interpretations and compare the interpretations that are most likely based on selected categories.",

We train data-driven place name classifiers using toponyms already disambiguated in the training text --- by such existing cues as \"Nashville, Tenn.\" or \"Springfield, MA\" --- and test the system on texts where these cues have been stripped out and on hand-tagged historical texts. We experiment on three English-language corpora of varying provenance and complexity: newsfeed from the 1990s, personal narratives from the 19th century American west, and memoirs and records of the U.S. Civil War. Disambiguation accuracy ranges from 87% for news to 69% for some historical collections.",

"abstractNote": "Many approaches have been proposed in recent years in the context of Geographic Information Retrieval (GIR), mostly in order to deal with geographically constrained information in un-structured texts. Most of these approaches share a common scheme: in order to disambiguate a toponym t with n possible referents in a document d, they find a certain number of context toponyms c0,...,ck that are contained in d. A score for each referent is calculated according to the context toponyms, and the referent with the highest score is selected. According to the method used to calculate the score, Toponym Disambiguation (TD) methods may be grouped into three main categories, as proposed by [7]: • map-based: methods that use an explicit representation of toponyms on a map, for instance to calculate the average distance of unambiguous context toponyms from referents; • knowledge-based: methods that exploit external knowledge sources such as gazetteers, Wikipedia or ontologies to find disambiguation clues; • data-driven or supervised: methods based on machine learning techniques.",

The corpus includes:\n\nOver 1.8 million articles (excluding wire services articles that appeared during the covered period).\nOver 650,000 article summaries written by library \"scientists\".\nOver 1,500,000 articles manually tagged by library \"scientists\" with tags drawn from a normalized indexing vocabulary of people, organizations, locations and topic descriptors.\nOver 275,000 algorithmically-tagged articles that have been hand verified by the online production staff at nytimes.com.\nJava tools for parsing corpus documents from .xml into a memory resident object.\nAs part of the New York Times' indexing procedures, most articles are manually summarized and tagged by a staff of library \"scientists\". This collection contains over 650,000 article-summary pairs which may prove to be useful in the development and evaluation of algorithms for automated document summarization. Also, over 1.5 million documents have at least one tag. Articles are tagged for persons, places, organizations, titles and topics using a controlled vocabulary that is applied consistently across articles. For instance if one article mentions \"Bill Clinton\" and another refers to \"President William Jefferson Clinton\", both articles will be tagged with \"CLINTON, BILL\".\n\nThe New York Times has established a community website for researchers working on the data set at http://groups.google.com/group/nytnlp and encourages feedback and discussion about the corpus.",

"abstractNote": "We describe Web-a-Where, a system for associating geography with Web pages. Web-a-Where locates mentions of places and determines the place each name refers to. In addition, it assigns to each page a geographic focus --- a locality that the page discusses as a whole. The tagging process is simple and fast, aimed to be applied to large collections of Web pages and to facilitate a variety of location-based applications and data analyses.Geotagging involves arbitrating two types of ambiguities: geo/non-geo and geo/geo. A geo/non-geo ambiguity occurs when a place name also has a non-geographic meaning, such as a person name (e.g., Berlin) or a common word (Turkey). Geo/geo ambiguity arises when distinct places have the same name, as in London, England vs. London, Ontario. An implementation of the tagger within the framework of the WebFountain data mining system is described, and evaluated on several corpora of real Web pages. Precision of up to 82% on individual geotags is achieved. We also evaluate the relative contribution of various heuristics the tagger employs, and evaluate the focus-finding algorithm using a corpus pretagged with localities, showing that as many as 91% of the foci reported are correct up to the country level.",
